00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're examining the many reasons Kratos' life is nothing but pain.
00:07 Kratos' Sacrifice - God of War III
00:10 "My vengeance ends now."
00:16 Even as Kratos' assault and quest for revenge comes to an end at the close of God of War III,
00:22 the manipulation by the gods continues.
00:25 Athena explains that by opening Pandora's box, Kratos unleashed all the evils of the world and corrupted the gods of Olympus.
00:34 But Kratos himself was imbued with the hope for humanity, which Athena now demands that Kratos give over to her so she can rebuild the world.
00:43 Kratos, defiant as ever and no longer wanting to be a puppet of the gods, instead releases hope back into the world using the Blade of Olympus,
00:52 but in the process seems to sacrifice his life to do so.
00:56 Athena leaves the Spartan to his fate, but at the end we see that the severely wounded God of War somehow managed to survive.
01:04 Even though his act was selfless, it couldn't have been painless.
01:09 Zeus' Betrayal - God of War II
01:18 "It did not have to be this way, my son. This path is of your choosing."
01:25 After becoming the de facto God of War within the Greek pantheon, Kratos set out to make a name for himself by ransacking the many kingdoms of Greece with his loyal armies at the ready.
01:36 Not much of a step up from your predecessor there, Kratos.
01:40 With the many gods believing Kratos is out of control and despite Athena's warnings to stop his conquest,
01:46 Zeus is forced to step in and put an end to the destruction by tricking Kratos into giving up his godly powers.
01:53 However, it's not enough to simply take his powers.
01:57 Zeus in turn makes an example out of the arrogant God, sending Kratos to the depths of Hades once again.
02:04 This isn't the end of the many tragedies that plague Kratos in his second outing, however,
02:09 as upon attempting to exact his revenge, he accidentally kills Athena,
02:14 the only ally he had in all of Olympus.
02:17 "I have lived in the shadow of the gods for long enough. The time of the gods has come to an end!"
02:25 Mother Monster - God of War, Ghost of Sparta
02:29 "How I have missed you, Kratos."
02:33 "What treachery is this?"
02:35 Not long after Kratos becomes the new God of War, he's tortured by new nightmares,
02:40 this time involving his long lost brother Deimos.
02:44 Seeking answers to these visions, Kratos finds his mother seemingly on her deathbed in the Temple of Poseidon
02:51 and confesses that she lied to him about Deimos' fate and that his father trapped her there.
02:57 She pleads with Kratos to save his brother before he succumbs to his fate,
03:02 and just as she's about to confess the true identity of Kratos' father,
03:06 she transforms into an enormous disfigured creature and attacks Kratos.
03:12 The God of War is left with no choice but to put his mother out of her misery and set her soul free,
03:19 while adding another stain to Kratos'
03:22 "Mother! What have I done?"
03:29 Losing the Family Dog - God of War Ragnarok
03:33 "How'd that get in here? When the hell is he anyway?"
03:40 "That is my son."
03:43 "Well what in all yarns me the happen to him?"
03:46 The Holdra brothers were undoubtedly the breakout characters of the 2018 entry in the God of War series,
03:53 and Brock's no-nonsense approach and brash nature immediately endeared him to fans.
03:59 With the game's sequel, Ragnarok, players even got to travel Midgard and the Nine Realms with both brothers,
04:06 as well as gain further insight into their history.
04:09 So, of course, because we just can't be happy, something had to destroy it all.
04:15 As Brock pressures Nottir about his plans, Brock is unceremoniously killed by Odin in disguise,
04:23 and the absolute shock of it all had not only a catastrophic effect on players, but especially his brother Sindri.
04:30 Losing both of your faithful companions that had become family to Kratos and Atreus was heartbreaking,
04:37 and finding out that because Brock's soul was incomplete, there was no afterlife for him,
04:42 it just made us mourn for him all the more.
04:45 "A hole."
04:51 "What?"
04:54 "Cats bigger, the more you take away."
04:57 Brotherly bond. God of War, Ghost of Sparta.
05:01 "A Spartan warrior never lets his back hit the ground. Even in death, a Spartan stands tall for battle."
05:08 "You are a Spartan, are you not?"
05:12 "Yes, Kratos."
05:14 Having been encouraged to find his brother by his now-deceased mother, Kratos journeys to the Domain of Death,
05:20 seeking his forgotten brother and finds him near death.
05:24 Upon freeing him from his restraints, Deimos attacks Kratos, blaming him for his imprisonment,
05:31 and berating him for not protecting him or rescuing him earlier.
05:35 Deimos proclaims his hatred for his brother before Thanatos attempts to kill Deimos in retaliation for Kratos killing his daughter.
05:43 The brothers call a truce and team up to defeat the God of Death, but Deimos is killed in the process before the two could truly have their reconciliation.
05:52 Kratos then buries the last remnants of his family before proclaiming the gods will pay for this.
05:59 "It is not over."
06:02 "The gods will pay for this."
06:06 Atreus remains. God of War, Ragnarok.
06:10 "See what I can do when you trust me?"
06:13 Both Kratos and Atreus grew a lot during the events of the 2018 God of War and Ragnarok,
06:19 but that didn't mean they didn't still keep secrets from one another, believing they were protecting the other.
06:25 Atreus had grown into a strong and capable warrior, and had long wanted to find out who he was supposed to be in this world, as all young men do.
06:34 But Kratos, worried for his son's safety, trains him relentlessly for a future without him.
06:41 After the fall of Asgard, Atreus confesses to Kratos he needs to find the remaining giants still in hiding, but that it's a journey he must take alone.
06:51 Kratos, finally understanding his son must forge his own path, agrees to let him go,
06:57 but reminds him that while Loki might need to discover the world and how he fits into it, Atreus will always have a home waiting for him.
07:06 "Atreus."
07:09 "Atreus remains."
07:13 Leaving Calliope behind. God of War, Chains of Olympus.
07:22 "Upon seeing his daughter, Kratos realized that all that he had been working for, all that he had wanted, was within reach."
07:33 After discovering Persephone is the one behind all the events of his journey, Kratos prepares to fight her.
07:40 But Persephone offers the future God of War a choice.
07:44 Renounce his power and spend the rest of eternity in Elysium with his lost daughter Calliope, or fight her for the fate of the world.
07:52 Kratos, of course still riddled with guilt, absolves himself of his powers to see his daughter once again.
07:59 However, this reunion is short-lived as Kratos discovers that Persephone seeks to destroy the world for her abandonment by the gods to the underworld.
08:08 Knowing what he must do, Kratos attempts to leave Calliope behind to regain his strength, but Calliope won't let her father go without a fight.
08:17 She struggles to hold on to him, begging him not to go, and all the while, the player must perform the Quick Time Event to let her go while trying to ignore her pleading cries.
08:28 "No! Father, no!"
08:35 "At that moment, Kratos knew his destiny was not with Calliope."
08:40 Love lost again. God of War, 2018.
08:44 "We will always walk together, Kratos. You will always be a part of me. I will always be a part of you."
08:53 "And when you are gone, that part of me dies as well."
08:56 The inciting incident that led to Kratos and Atreus' adventure across the Nine Realms and eventually to Ragnarok,
09:03 Faye's untimely death affects both Kratos and Atreus in different ways.
09:09 Kratos, still dealing with the events of the Greek Saga, finally found a peaceful life free from his demons, only to lose the one person who kept him grounded once again.
09:19 Atreus lost his mother, the only member of the family who showed him any love or affection, and is suddenly forced to travel with a father he barely knows.
09:30 Both of their feelings about her death come to the surface while the pair travels to Alfheim, and Kratos travels through the Light and hears Atreus' pleas for his mother to return.
09:40 Kratos then reveals to Atreus how devastating the loss of Faye was for him as well.
09:45 "Do not mistake my silence for lack of grief. Or, now you wish, leave me to my own."
09:54 Selling his soul, God of War.
09:57 "The youngest and boldest captain in the Spartan army. Kratos inspired fierce loyalty in his men. It had always been enough to carry them through any battle."
10:06 The Spartans were proud warriors, fighting until their final breath for the chance at a glorious victory, and none were prouder than Kratos.
10:15 A ruthless and bloodthirsty captain, Kratos' string of victories made him overconfident, but all his pride was shattered as he and his army faced down the mighty barbarians.
10:27 With his army defeated and Kratos all that remained, he called out to the Greek God of War, Ares, and pledged his loyal service in exchange for victory.
10:37 Ares, seeing the Spartans' potential, agrees and enslaves Kratos with the Blades of Chaos.
10:44 Kratos achieves his victory, but his pride would end up costing him everything with this bond to Ares.
10:51 "In return, ultimate power."
10:55 "I will have my vengeance, God of War."
10:59 "Beware, Kratos. The dangers in the temple are greater than you know."
11:06 "But the village oracle's warning fell on deaf ears."
11:10 Kratos, having loyally served Ares for many years, abiding by the God's every whim, began his assault on a small village of Athenian worshippers.
11:20 Unbeknownst to Kratos, however, Ares had called Kratos' wife and child to this village and tricked him into killing them both,
11:28 believing that by severing his ties to his old life, Kratos would become his ultimate warrior and help him overthrow Olympus.
11:36 The elder of the village, having tried to warn the Spartan, cursed Kratos to wear the ashes of his family so all would know of his atrocities.
11:45 Haunted by the nightmares of his actions, Kratos vows revenge against Ares, but even achieving this victory still did not bring him peace.
11:54 His nightmares continued, and his revenge accomplished nothing except further servitude to the gods as they crowned him the new God of War.
12:03 "The mortal who had become the new God of War."
