00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays.
00:10 Today we're looking at the 20 best historical figures in Assassin's Creed games.
00:15 We shall meet again.
00:18 I'm Miss Frye.
00:19 Ma'am?
00:20 Should you want it?
00:24 I saved you some cake.
00:25 Who says you don't learn anything by playing video games?
00:28 Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:33 the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:37 Herodotus - Assassin's Creed Odyssey
00:40 Who's this?
00:41 Just a simple pilgrim.
00:42 He just saw the Oracle.
00:43 I couldn't help but ask if she's as glorious as they say.
00:49 The ancient Greek is generally referred to as the "Father of History" as throughout
00:54 his lifetime, he wrote many historical works that form the basis of how the field of history
00:59 has been conducted for thousands of years since.
01:02 However, he isn't really known for his reliability, often including fantastical stories and myths
01:08 in his historical accounts.
01:10 Well, it's just he seemed interested in legends.
01:14 Like you.
01:15 I thought you might get along.
01:17 How did...
01:19 But he appears as one of Cassandra's closest allies in Odyssey, joining her on the Edestria.
01:26 So Ubisoft is perhaps taking the line that all those impossible things Herodotus wrote
01:31 about actually could have happened, especially in the world of Assassin's Creed.
01:36 Drawing blood in Delphi is considered an insult to Apollo.
01:41 Punishment is severe.
01:42 Alexander Graham Bell - Assassin's Creed Syndicate
01:45 Oh, comes apart.
01:50 I see.
01:51 Could have used one of these to fit my fuses on top of Big Ben.
01:55 This genius inventor developed and eventually patented the first telephone back in the 1870s.
02:01 But we catch up with a younger version of him in Syndicate, years before he eventually
02:06 left Britain for North America.
02:08 He's essentially Evie and Jacob's Q, building various tools and gadgets that they can use
02:13 against the Templars.
02:15 He repairs and creates the grappling hook, voltaic bombs, and smoke bombs they use throughout
02:20 the game.
02:21 And I've noted down the formula for you.
02:24 It's not perfect yet, but by golly, it works.
02:27 He also enlists their help in freeing London's newspapers, which were previously printing
02:32 only news and stories that benefited Crawford Stark and the Templars.
02:37 He disappears after the first hour or two, but is a fun presence when he's around.
02:43 Did you find yourselves with a moment to spare?
02:47 Do drop by.
02:48 Paul Revere, Assassin's Creed 3.
02:51 Ah, Connor.
02:52 What a relief.
02:54 You came.
02:55 Allow me to...
02:59 He was famously the man who warned the Continental Army that "the British are coming!"
03:04 Though in real life, Revere never actually said those words during his midnight ride.
03:10 In the game, we find out that he didn't even ride the horse either.
03:15 Connor was given that duty, having to ride through the frontier following Revere's frustratingly
03:20 vague directions to warn the militiamen.
03:23 The British are coming!
03:26 Back in the saddle, my friend!
03:28 We have more people to warn!
03:29 Despite his reputation as a hero of the American War of Independence, Ubisoft portrayed Revere
03:35 as an irritating presence that Connor doesn't even particularly want to help.
03:40 Though the mission would have been a lot more fun if the horse galloping wasn't so slow.
03:46 It's best you stay here and help our man John Parker hold the town.
03:50 It'll give us time to spread the word.
03:52 Queen Victoria, Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
03:54 Your Majesty, I apologize.
03:56 The cake is particularly good.
03:59 Enjoy the ball.
04:02 At the end of Syndicate, we find out that the Shroud of Eden is being held in a secret
04:07 vault underneath Buckingham Palace, built to contain it by Prince Albert.
04:12 During this final mission, the Fries infiltrate the palace, and Evie makes the acquaintance
04:18 of Her Majesty.
04:19 There are a handful of Queen Victoria missions in the post-game where you help her in all
04:24 sorts of ways.
04:25 We shall meet again.
04:26 And Miss Frye?
04:27 Ma'am?
04:28 Should you want it, I saved you some cake.
04:35 Including by thwarting a Templar plot to blow up the House of Parliament.
04:40 The game ends with the Queen asking the Fries to serve the Crown, and Evie telling her to
04:44 abandon the ruthless imperialism of the British Empire.
04:48 She doesn't listen, but at least Evie tries.
04:51 I understand and respect your position.
04:54 Armed as you are by your creed, you will indulge me one final time and receive these gifts.
05:03 Aspasia, Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
05:06 I couldn't help but notice your talent for debate.
05:09 Well done.
05:11 Socrates is an interesting character.
05:14 Pericles may be the leader of Athens, but Aspasia is the woman behind the man, and is
05:19 one of the most interesting characters in the game.
05:23 Early on, she helps Cassandra find her mother, but all isn't as it seems.
05:28 After purging the Greek world of the Cult of Kosmos, we learn that, all along, Aspasia
05:34 has been its shadowy leader, the Ghost.
05:37 Ah, Phoebe.
05:38 Pericles has retired to the balcony already, has he?
05:42 His ability to sneak off and sulk is second to none.
05:45 She explains that the Cult had different objectives originally, only for it to be corrupted by
05:49 Deimos.
05:50 Aspasia helped Cassandra, allowing her to wipe out the Cult, because she disagreed with
05:56 what they were doing.
05:57 In real life, very little is known about Aspasia, though it's unlikely she was in charge of
06:03 a clandestine organization like this.
06:06 When you're done, return here.
06:08 Together, we will find who you're looking for.
06:11 Winston Churchill, Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
06:14 We appear to have been following the same trail, Miss Raya.
06:17 I got here first.
06:18 Indeed, you are to be commended.
06:20 I fear, however, that we have not wholly rooted out the evil in this vicinity.
06:25 He wasn't born until 1874, a few years after most of Syndicate takes place, but you'll
06:31 remember him if you played the World War I missions.
06:34 By traveling through an anomaly in the most eastern part of the River Thames, you'll go
06:39 to 1915 and take control of Lydia Frye.
06:43 Lydia is enlisted by Churchill himself to help eradicate German spies from London.
06:48 And of course, they're all also Templar agents.
06:51 One of my experimental projects when I was Lord of the Admiralty.
06:54 I haven't always been a man of shadows.
06:57 And I suppose this victory will thrust you back into the limelight.
07:01 Churchill's also one of the associates whose loyalty you need to gain for various achievements.
07:06 If you didn't play the World War I level, you were missing out on a great diversion
07:11 that again proves that a 20th century mainline Assassin's Creed would work, if Ubisoft would
07:17 only greenlight it.
07:27 The Borjas - Assassin's Creed Brotherhood Rodrigo, Chessirey, and Lucrezia Borja feature
07:39 prominently in Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood.
07:42 They're some of the best and most detestable villains in gaming.
07:46 But their video game portrayal may not be true to life.
07:50 There are plenty of stories and rumors about the Borja's depravity and sinful lives.
07:56 But there's a growing consensus among modern historians that a lot of the tales about their
08:00 debauchery may have been slander, levied toward them by other Italian noble families at the
08:06 time.
08:07 Chessirey, it's me, your queen.
08:10 You are my sister, nothing more.
08:15 Where is it?
08:16 But that would have made for a less interesting story.
08:19 And it was certainly a satisfying conclusion to hunt down Chessirey and finally assassinate
08:24 him after what he did to Ezio's family.
08:35 Bartholomew Roberts - Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag
08:39 I have no secrets to share with you now.
08:42 But if you'll lend me your aid in two months' time west of the Leawood Islands, it's there
08:48 you'll get some answers.
08:50 You probably know him better as Black Bart, but the infamous pirate was never called this
08:55 during his lifetime.
08:57 When he arrives in the game, we find out that he's the first sage we ever encounter in the
09:02 series, a reincarnation of the Isu Aita who wants to reclaim the Crystal Skull.
09:08 He also betrays Edward and becomes a major villain.
09:14 In real life, Roberts was a classic pirate, known for flying a Jolly Roger above his ship
09:26 and devising a pirate code for his crew to follow, with an array of strict pirate rules.
09:32 He was also a very successful pirate up until his defeat in 1722, capturing hundreds of
09:38 ships and freeing many slaves.
09:48 Niccolo Machiavelli - Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
10:00 Upon Ezio's arrival in Rome, Machiavelli helps him get the lay of the land.
10:05 He was in Assassin's Creed too, but becomes a more important ally in Brotherhood, showing
10:10 Ezio how the Borgias control the city and how the people can be freed.
10:15 He's also briefly suspected by LaVolpe of being a traitor to the Assassins, in a dramatic
10:20 mission set.
10:26 In real life, Machiavelli was a renowned statesman and political philosopher, working primarily
10:31 for the Medici's in Florence, who were also allies to the Assassins in the games.
10:37 In fact, he spent most of his time in Florence in reality, only visiting Rome occasionally
10:42 on diplomatic missions.
10:48 Leonidas I of Sparta - Assassin's Creed Odyssey
10:58 The game opens with a dramatic recreation of the Battle of Thermopylae, Spartan's last
11:03 stand against the Persians.
11:05 Leonidas is the most famous king Sparta ever had, and it turns out he's the grandfather
11:11 of Cassandra, which is how she gets his legendary spear, itself an Isu artifact, to use as a
11:17 stand-in for the hidden blade.
11:27 Throughout the course of the game, we get other flashbacks as Cassandra is briefly able
11:31 to relive Leonidas' memories.
11:33 She witnesses his death and humiliation at the hands of Xerxes, the Persian king, while
11:39 creating a monument to Leonidas with Herodotus.
11:50 Alfred the Great - Assassin's Creed Valhalla
11:57 One of the most famous English kings, Alfred the Great is so named because of his efforts
12:02 fending off many Viking invasions, encouraging widespread literacy, and unifying the country's
12:08 warring kingdoms.
12:09 He became the first monarch of all of England.
12:13 In typical Ubisoft form, Alfred takes on a more villainous role than history generally
12:18 affords him.
12:19 Now, he's the sinister enemy of the Raven Clan, and the most important Templar in England.
12:25 In fact, it eventually comes out that Alfred is the father of the Templar Order, as it
12:30 exists by the time of the Crusades.
12:33 So much for being great.
12:39 Robespierre - Assassin's Creed Unity
12:47 The tyrant himself, it wouldn't be a game about the French Revolution without him.
12:52 A hugely influential figure in French history, it was under Robespierre's leadership that
12:57 the First French Republic's reign of terror began, and King Louis XVI was executed.
13:04 Arno and Elise finally make Robespierre's acquaintance at the height of the Thermidorian
13:08 Reaction.
13:09 Famously, as Robespierre was violently ousted, he was shot non-lethally in the face.
13:15 In Unity, it's Elise herself who does this while trying to find the location of the game's
13:20 main villain.
13:21 Robespierre wasn't the only leader of France to be encountered during Unity.
13:26 Arno also bumps into a young Napoleon Bonaparte.
13:37 Suleiman I - Assassin's Creed Revelations
13:51 The Ottoman Empire's longest reigning sultan, Ezio encounters a young, idealistic Suleiman
13:57 during his time in medieval Turkey.
13:59 The highly educated prince gets involved with the Assassins many years before he'd eventually
14:04 become Suleiman the Magnificent, given that name because of his widespread reforms and
14:08 military victories.
14:09 He and Ezio's interests briefly align, and it is even Suleiman who helps Ezio finally
14:16 make it across the Black Sea to Cappadocia and saves his life more than once.
14:21 Of all the royals and monarchs you brush shoulders with during these games, Suleiman is one of
14:26 the few who's actually likable and remains a key ally throughout.
14:33 Anne Bonny and Mary Read - Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag
14:46 These two legendary female pirates sail together on the high seas in the company of Calico Jack,
14:52 who's much less memorable though he does appear in Black Flag.
14:56 Bonny and Read famously dressed up as men during their time at sea, and in keeping with
15:01 this, when you first encounter Read, she's in disguise.
15:05 Of all the pirates Kenway befriends, these two are some of the most colorful, though
15:10 he also ends up running into Blackbeard, perhaps the most famous pirate of all time.
15:16 Read, Blackbeard, and Kenway are all masterminds behind freeing Nasu from the Royal Navy.
15:22 Wining and dining the most notorious pirates in history is definitely a fun way to spend
15:27 your time.
15:36 Charles Dickens - Assassin's Creed Syndicate
15:48 Of course, the Victorian era's most famous author showed up in Syndicate and almost immediately
15:54 met the Fry Twins.
15:56 He enlists their help in some of the whole series' best side missions, where you join
16:00 him as an investigator for the Ghost Club.
16:04 At Dickinson's behest, you'll debunk a haunted house, a ghostly carriage, and even unravel
16:09 the mystery behind the monstrous Spring-Heeled Jack.
16:13 The best part is that this is historically accurate.
16:17 Charles Dickens really did join the Ghost Club and spent time proving paranormal occurrences
16:23 were hoaxes.
16:24 But if that Charles isn't to your liking, you can also help Charles Darwin out a few
16:28 times when he's the victim of some unflattering caricatures.
16:37 Al Mualim - Assassin's Creed
16:39 AC fans will know him as Al Mualim, while historians better recognize his figure as
16:53 Rashid ad-Din Sina.
16:56 There are plenty of key differences between Al Mualim in the game and in reality, like
17:00 how the real guy never found an ancient artifact capable of bending people to his will, but
17:06 also some similarities.
17:08 Sinan was the leader of the Order of Assassins that really did operate out of Masyaf during
17:13 the Crusades.
17:14 He's a major character in the first game, initially being Altair's teacher and leader,
17:20 and eventually becoming the main villain when his machinations on the Apple of Eden were
17:25 made clear.
17:31 Caesar and Cleopatra - Assassin's Creed Origins
17:47 There are many famous Roman emperors, but Julius Caesar remains the most recognizable.
17:53 His long-running affair with Cleopatra VII, herself one of Egypt's most notorious rulers,
17:58 is played out in its entirety during Assassin's Creed Origins, as Io works directly under
18:04 Cleopatra to oust her brother from Egypt's throne.
18:07 And Origins' story goes on for so long that we get to play through Caesar's death on the
18:13 Ides of March when he was stabbed in broad daylight by his closest allies.
18:18 The game goes deep into political intrigue behind the end of Caesar's life and how Rome
18:23 came to control Egypt, spending lots of time with these major historical figures.
18:35 Alcibiades - Assassin's Creed Odyssey You'll meet a lot of bizarre people in your
18:48 Odyssey across the Greek world, but the Athenian politician Alcibiades is cut above the rest.
18:55 You first encounter him at a party Pericles is hosting, getting up to no good with half
19:00 a dozen people in the back room.
19:03 But he keeps returning and gets funnier every time, asking for your help with a series of
19:08 unusual side missions that turn out to be elaborate schemes to help his friends.
19:13 And where Alcibiades goes, it seems Socrates is never far behind, always with another riddle
19:19 to get on your nerves.
19:31 Benjamin Franklin - Assassin's Creed III and Assassin's Creed Rogue
19:48 You run into all the founding fathers in Assassin's Creed III sooner or later, helping George
19:53 Washington and other key revolutionary figures in their war against the British.
19:58 But the most fun character to spend a few missions helping is by far Benjamin Franklin,
20:04 who spends the game inventing useful devices and giving Hatham some choice advice when
20:09 it comes to older women.
20:11 He's back again in the tyrannical King Washington timeline and even shows his face in both Rogue
20:17 and Unity, encountering Shay and Arno and accidentally helping Shay to kill Arno's
20:23 father.
20:31 Leonardo da Vinci - Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
20:47 Quite possibly the greatest inventor in human history, Leonardo da Vinci is one of the best
20:52 characters to ever appear in Assassin's Creed.
20:55 Ezio first meets Leonardo before he leaves Florence and gives him a few new tools.
21:01 He even loans Ezio the use of his flying machine at one point.
21:04 By the time Brotherhood rolls around, Leonardo has been forced to design war machines for
21:09 Cheshire Borja, including an early tank and machine gun.
21:13 He asks Ezio to sneak into the top secret compounds and destroy both the machines and
21:18 the blueprints.
21:19 He's a great character and his friendship with Ezio is great each time Leonardo returns.
21:41 EZIO ORDERS THE PRISONERS OF THE LAST KING TO BE SENT TO THE PRISONER'S HALL.
21:48 LEONARDO DA VINCI IS BACK IN THE TURRETS OF THE PRISONERS OF THE LAST KING.
21:53 [BLANK_AUDIO]
