00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're counting down the 10 best-selling PS2 games of all
00:14 time.
00:15 For this list we'll be looking at the true moneymakers for PlayStation's beloved second
00:19 console.
00:20 These are the games that brought in the millions, both in terms of money and units.
00:24 If you've played any of these PS2 best-selling juggernauts, be sure to head on over to the
00:29 comments section to let us know which were your personal favorites.
00:32 Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:37 the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:40 Kingdom Hearts While Kingdom Hearts is a regular part of
00:50 the gaming discourse nowadays, it wasn't always that way.
00:54 This wacky yet completely lovable action RPG featuring classic Disney characters and worlds
00:59 blended with Final Fantasy wasn't a guaranteed success way back in 2002.
01:04 Fortunately, if you've already guessed from the title of this video, it was a smash hit,
01:10 with players hoovering up the delightfully whimsical adventures of Sora, Donald, and
01:14 Goofy as they took on the Heartless.
01:17 The game touts charm around every single corner, plenty of Disney and Final Fantasy fan service
01:23 alongside some simple yet fun combat leveling and exploration.
01:27 Final Fantasy XII The first of the Final Fantasy games on this
01:38 list.
01:39 Yes, Final Fantasy is that darn popular.
01:42 This twelfth outing for the venerable series took more steps into the action RPG arena.
01:48 Final Fantasy XII once again features a grand, epic fantasy story, one revolving around magic,
01:54 airships, warring empires, royalty, and the like.
01:57 The game was revolutionary for a multitude of reasons, including its open world, seamless
02:01 battles, a free camera, and so much more.
02:05 These may sound like small things today, but back when Final Fantasy XII released, these
02:10 proved that the long-running series was ready to tackle new ideas.
02:13 Plus, the game's six main playable protagonists, including Vaughn and Ash, were all well-written,
02:20 likable, and fun to play as during the exciting battles.
02:23 Tekken 5 Considered by some to be the best fighting
02:32 game franchise, Tekken has remained popular all throughout the various gaming generations.
02:38 Enter Tekken 5, a truly next-gen, for the time, arcade fighting game that made its way
02:43 from arcades to the PS2 in 2005.
02:47 Namco knocked it out of the park with its previous versions, but this fifth outing really
02:51 raised up the series multiple notches.
02:54 From a jam-packed roster of new and returning fighters, including Feng Wei, Raven, Yoshimitsu,
02:59 Anna Williams, and so many more, alongside expanded stages, Tekken 5 was a smash hit.
03:05 What made this PS2 version so popular with fans and newcomers, apart from the top-tier
03:10 fighting model, was the introduction of something called the "Hot System."
03:14 This unique system allowed for character vulnerabilities during battle, which greatly enhanced the
03:18 nuances of moves, combos, and abilities.
03:22 Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty Upping the ante from the juggernaut that was
03:34 Metal Gear Solid for the PS1, Sons of Liberty managed to blow all expectations out of the
03:39 water and prove that Kojima and his team at Konami really knew how to build on past gaming
03:45 successes.
03:46 Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty is a dense, tightly woven stealth gameplay experience,
03:51 one that isn't afraid to dive into heady themes such as social engineering, political
03:56 issues, existentialism, and more.
03:58 Sure, the deep and often over-the-top story helps Sons of Liberty to stand out in the
04:03 PS2 library, however, the game also refined its touted tactical espionage action gameplay.
04:10 In combination with more robust AI, you could quickly swap between first and third-person
04:15 combat, peek around corners, take cover, and even avoid combat altogether for a pure stealth
04:21 experience.
04:22 The package as a whole really struck a chord with fans, hence why it became one of the
04:26 best-sellers on the venerable console.
04:29 Grand Theft Auto 3 Simply put, open-world games wouldn't be
04:39 what they are today without Grand Theft Auto 3.
04:42 Ditching the top-down perspective of its previous two games, GTA 3 pushed the boundaries of
04:47 freeform gameplay, open-world design, meticulous writing, and, of course, controversy.
04:54 While open-world games might be a dime a dozen nowadays, GTA 3 really threw everything at
04:59 the wall to ensure players could take on missions and tasks all throughout Liberty City as they
05:04 saw fit.
05:05 Playing as Claude, you could easily spend countless hours just roaming about the city,
05:10 creating your own havoc and fun.
05:12 It's really not surprising that people love this game given how polished, edgy, and enjoyable
05:17 it is.
05:18 There's just always something in the world of Liberty City to pique your curiosity and
05:22 keep you playing.
05:23 Final Fantasy X It seems like everyone, even non-JRPG fans,
05:35 have at least tried Final Fantasy X once in their gaming careers.
05:40 This seminal outing in the prolific Square series is downright fantastic.
05:44 I could probably just mention Blitzball and enough people would be chomping at the bit
05:48 to replay this game.
05:50 This massive fantasy JRPG takes place in the lush and gorgeous tropical world of Spira,
05:55 where our hapless adventurers, led by Titus, must explore and battle in order to take down
06:00 Sin.
06:01 Final Fantasy X retained the popular turn-based battles of its predecessors that many fans
06:06 of the series really loved.
06:08 However, this time around, they were known as Conditional Turn-Based Battles, or CTB
06:13 for short.
06:14 This evolution of the battle system was more engaging and thoughtful, allowing for greater
06:18 strategy with your party members.
06:21 On top of an immersive story, a beautifully realized world to explore, mini-games to take
06:25 part in, and poignant character vignettes, you could also develop your team through the
06:30 meaty sphere grid leveling system.
06:32 And yes, don't worry, I didn't forget.
06:34 We won't forget about the jovial moment where Titus laughs uncontrollably and awkwardly
06:38 in equal measure.
06:39 Good times had by all.
06:49 Grand Theft Auto Vice City
06:55 Hopefully you aren't sick of GTA yet since we have more to come.
06:59 2002's Grand Theft Auto Vice City is like an 80's drenched, neon-soaked version of
07:04 GTA 3.
07:05 While that may sound a bit reductive, it's actually quite the opposite since the fresh
07:09 coat of paint and splash of pizazz is what makes Vice City so special in the hearts of
07:14 many PS2 fans.
07:16 Clearly inspired by a version of Miami, Vice City is a sunny paradise with a seedy underbelly,
07:23 one where criminal protagonist Tommy Vercetti must exist and thrive.
07:27 This next outing for the GTA series built upon its predecessor with a more refined combat
07:33 model, in-depth quests and missions, a larger open world, a killer soundtrack, and freakin'
07:38 Ray Liotta as Tommy Vercetti.
07:40 I mean, what more could you want in a game?
07:49 Gran Turismo 4
07:58 You gotta love Gran Turismo's tagline of "the real driving simulator."
08:02 It clearly outlines what you should expect from the racing game experience.
08:07 This is one heck of a gargantuan simulation racing experience.
08:11 You have over 700 cars at your disposal, over 50 unique tracks to race on, and a boatload
08:17 of modes to immerse yourself in.
08:19 Depending on your preference, you can dive into the A-Spec mode that sees you drive courses
08:24 from a sort of first-person view to earn points for progression.
08:27 There's a B-Spec mode where you can play as the crew chief, special driving missions,
08:31 and a ton more.
08:33 While it's not an easy racing game to get to grips with, the sheer level of detail and
08:37 authenticity for vehicles and stages that Polyphony Digital imparted is pretty darn staggering.
08:44 Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec
08:51 Speaking of Gran Turismo, we now come to Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, the second best-selling
08:57 game of all time for the PS2.
09:00 While the series' fourth outing successfully iterated on the Pinnacle Racing simulation
09:04 gameplay, it's A-Spec that started it all on PlayStation's second console.
09:09 The game is broken up into a multitude of events, such as races, tournaments, championships,
09:14 license tests, and more, all of which go towards unlocking more vehicles, upgrading them with
09:19 cash, and simply creating a robust garage.
09:22 The main gameplay model is A-Spec, where you drive from a first-person perspective, something
09:27 unique to the racing game in general.
09:29 While it's light in content compared to its fourth outing, GT3 A-Spec is a simulation
09:35 racing juggernaut that shouldn't be missed.
09:37 Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
09:48 Now the sheer fact that there are three Grand Theft Auto games on the list of best-selling
09:52 PS2 games of all time is downright staggering, and Rockstar should be praised for that rare
09:58 feat.
09:59 In 2004, Rockstar released San Andreas, a truly incredible open-world game that is still
10:04 talked about regularly in today's gaming discourse.
10:08 San Andreas took every positive aspect of GTA 3 and Vice City and then completely refined
10:13 them all, from gameplay to storytelling to open-world design and concepts.
10:18 Selling a ridiculous 17.33 million units over its lifetime, San Andreas is the true epitome
10:25 of success on the PS2.
10:27 The game takes place in a fictional version of Los Angeles, and you step into the shoes
10:31 of CJ as he works his way through the gang-ridden streets of San Andreas, all while trying to
10:36 make his mark.
10:37 The game upped the ante by adding RPG elements and even more weapons, vehicles, characters,
10:42 and locations.
10:43 Like any GTA game, it was met with controversies.
10:46 However, by and large, it piqued the interest of millions of PS2 gamers worldwide.
