iPhone 15 Pro Max Hands On | Tom's Guide

  • last year
The Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are still priced at $799 and $899 respectively, but after getting some hands-on time with the two, we're convinced that they're real flagship killers in disguise because they pack many of the same features found on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. They consist of the Dynamic Island, Super Retina XDR Display, A16 Bionic chip, and a similar charging speed. Most notably, there's a new main 48-megapixel camera that does a neat trick to provide a usable 2x telephoto zoom to cover all of the range that content creators look for.

00:00 Hey guys, it's Jon B. here with Tom's Guide.
00:07 I'm here at the Apple event for the iPhone 15.
00:09 I'm going to check out the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, talk about what's new, what's different,
00:14 what's big about it, and of course, give you all my thoughts.
00:18 All right, so here we are.
00:22 The iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 6.1 inches versus 6.7 inches.
00:26 That's honestly the difference.
00:27 If you like a bigger phone, go with the 15 Plus here.
00:30 They have the aluminum frame, nice polish, feels good in hand.
00:34 Surprisingly, they're both lightweight.
00:36 I'm kind of jealous about the iPhone 15 versus the Pro because they have the better looking
00:40 colors, more colorful, unlike the other, you know, 15 Pro, you get black, metallic, gray,
00:46 whatever, but beautiful, gorgeous displays.
00:48 Like I said, 6.7 inches on the iPhone 15 Plus, really bright and vibrant.
00:55 Now what's new, the first thing here you're going to see that's different is the dynamic
00:58 island.
00:59 Now this comes from the iPhone 14 Pro last year, so now you have detailed information,
01:03 quick glances, notifications, useful, handy.
01:06 So that's the first big difference here.
01:08 Second big difference here is the bottom.
01:10 You have the new USB-C port, gone is lightning.
01:13 Hey, more compatibility with different accessories.
01:16 10 gigabits per second transfer speeds from what they say here.
01:20 Third big thing I'm going to tell you here is the camera on the back.
01:23 iPhones have a new camera sensor, which is great.
01:27 Basically inherits the iPhone 14 Pro camera, so you have a 48 megapixel camera.
01:33 Now at first you'll see it's a dual camera setup here, so you have your main camera paired
01:37 with your ultra wide, but they do something really special and they kind of give you a
01:42 third camera, a two times zoom lens.
01:45 So technically telephoto covers the ranges, which is really nice.
01:48 Lots of versatility if you're a content creator.
01:51 You go really wide, very close, or very far away.
01:55 Checking out the new post focusing effect here on the iPhone 15 main camera.
02:00 So basically take a photo and then later in the app, you can choose of course the focus.
02:05 So of course changing the aperture right there, F 1.4 really blow out the background.
02:09 But if I want the other person in the background in focus and the person in the foreground
02:14 out of focus, you could do that, which is what I like about this.
02:17 You could shoot now, worry later.
02:19 Now these phones are going to be available very shortly and the starting price is going
02:23 to be $799 for the iPhone 15 and of course $100 more, $900, $899 for the iPhone 15 plus.
02:30 Three things that stand out to me, again with the iPhone 15, you have the dynamic island,
02:35 you have the A16 bionic chip, and also that 48 megapixel camera.
02:39 So essentially you're getting the iPhone 14 Pro, but at the cheaper iPhone 15 price.
