00:00 branches out of this lilac and the second set is going to be kind of just simple fall. We've got
00:05 Douglas and Russell chilling with us today. We've got a gator full of beautiful plants and I do have
00:14 one... these are like three smaller branches cut off of the lilac from previous years. Like I think
00:20 I've had these, I save them from year to year because I don't run across branches that look
00:24 like this all that often. So these have probably been off this lilac for four years and then we've
00:29 got one prime looking branch right up here and they even have like little lichens on them. It's
00:34 just perfect. I think we're going to have to go with the pruning saw today because the diameter
00:38 of this branch is pretty thick but let me show you these beautiful plants. So these look very
00:45 tall. They are a type of crane cabbage I think. I don't know are they a cabbage or a kale? Let me
00:49 find the... a kale. Ornamental kale in the crane series. See how they form that stem like that and
00:55 then they just have like the little rosette at the top? And I really needed something to be bulky
01:00 and a little bit more of a filler around the base of the branches. I didn't want to just have
01:04 branches with a bunch of short stuff. So instead of having to build up a tier or do anything like
01:09 that I can just use these longer ones which is so fun. I was able to find six down at the garden
01:14 center. I think we'll use three per container. We'll see how that goes. And then we've got the
01:19 most gorgeous spilling plant here. This is a type of creeping jenny. It's called Persian chocolate.
01:25 Look at the leaves on this thing. They're going in a light concrete colored pot just like a gray
01:31 pot so I think the contrast is going to be high. Like look at the contrast here. They've got that
01:37 kind of burgundy chocolate color and then the red stems. Now let me see the other stats here.
01:43 Hardy to negative 10 so they're zone 6. Two to four inches tall. 36 inch spacing. So I could
01:49 pop these out and use them in the landscape when we're done with them next season. We've also got
01:55 some Cirrus dusty Miller here for a bright icy pop. We've got some orange pansies. These are
02:01 yep pansy orange. And then here's our little Halloween touch to go with our branches. Now
02:07 these crows. Yeah there's losing feathers. They've also seen better days. They've lost so many
02:12 feathers. I've had these for probably 10 years and they usually surface. I started with like six or
02:18 seven and I've only got three left. The other ones have fallen apart but I don't really want this to
02:22 be over the top Halloween. I just want some slight a slight mention of it. And then we've also got
02:28 this gorgeous one. I don't think I'm going to be using all of these in the pot but we'll see.
02:32 This is a ornamental kale called Yokohama red and it's so pretty and it's such a gorgeous contrast
02:40 to that kale there. We've got the smoother brighter leaves and then that crinkly kind of purple
02:47 look. And you've probably noticed in fall containers I lean heavily on ivy pansies violas
02:53 cabbage and kale because they last the longest for the season. They hold up to heavy heavy frost.
02:58 Oftentimes they'll hold up through the winter. They might look a little bit sad especially in
03:02 the morning but they usually perk up especially if it's a more mild winter and we get a we get a lot
03:07 more mileage out of them than we do other things. I rarely do mums because they're just a flash in
03:12 the pan. And while they're pretty when they're in full bloom they're too much maintenance and want
03:16 to just something I don't want to mess with. So these are the type of plants I love to work with.
03:20 I think we need to take this branch back pretty much all the way. I mean I don't know. Yeah
03:25 probably all the way down to here. So let's do that quick.
03:44 I need my weenies.
03:48 Sounds good.
04:02 This is awesome. Oh we're still a little bit in the shade up here. These are the first two
04:11 containers I would like to plant using these branches right here. Aren't these just amazing?
04:18 I love the bark here and then especially on the branch we just picked or just cut I guess.
04:25 All of the lichens are just so amazing. I'm gonna have to cut it down a little bit
04:30 so that they'll match a little bit more closely. These aren't as tall. I just love them. Look at
04:34 those containers up next to the house. My goodness the sun does come in here in the morning. Get a
04:40 little hopscotch going on right there. The albrighto coleus is just an amazing plant.
04:48 Look at that. And the pegasus begonias and the sweet potato vine are pretty much the only plants
04:54 that ended up shining in our arrangement this year. But I love it. I love all the foliage here.
05:00 I mean we've got four really nice foliage plants. Albrighto coleus, the dicondra silver falls,
05:06 we've got I can't remember is that the medusa sweet potato vine and then the pegasus begonia.
05:10 Then over there looking awesome. So these containers have already been cleaned out.
05:15 We're just going to go ahead and use the soil that we used in here this summer. Usually I
05:18 like to start with fresh soil after summer plants because summer plants utilize so much nutrients.
05:24 But a couple reasons. One the summer plants didn't last for very long in these containers and that
05:28 one over there that one plugged up and we lost the plants and then shortly after we pulled the
05:33 plants in the other container. So they had been sitting, Douglas he just swiped at me. Yet.
05:40 Oh geez he just wants pets. But watch this. Oh not gonna swipe huh?
05:46 Oh the purrs. So anyway this soil wasn't super taxed like our other containers. And the other
05:55 reason is fall plants just usually don't need the nutrients. We're just going to be enjoying
05:59 them here for a couple of months and that's usually how fall containers go. So next spring
06:05 when we get ready to do our next summer containers in here we'll just clean them out and do new soil
06:10 at that point. I used to swap it out every season and I don't do that anymore. So this pot we just
06:16 tipped and poked a stick through like a stake through it. Made sure the drainage hole was all
06:20 cleared out so we should be good to go. We've got some petunias coming up in there right now.
06:25 Anyway that's what we're working with. Okay so we're going to start with the branches first
06:30 then the plants. Here we go.
06:32 [Music]
06:34 [Music]
06:36 [Music]
06:38 (gentle music)
06:40 (gentle music)
06:43 (gentle music)
06:45 (gentle music)
06:48 (gentle music)
07:17 - All right, so the container is now in the sun,
07:20 which is not usually the best light to show it in.
07:22 So I might come out here later on
07:23 once it's a little bit more dim
07:24 so we can see the branches a bit more,
07:27 but the branches are so cool, I love it.
07:30 And the cool part about this too
07:31 is that we can pop those branches out
07:33 and put like red twig dogwood or curly willow
07:36 for the winter time,
07:37 because most of this stuff will stay looking fairly decent.
07:40 And we can pop in evergreen boughs
07:42 if we need to, to kind of bulk it up,
07:44 kind of like the pots along the east fence line
07:46 that we just did.
07:47 But I just love, love this combination.
07:50 So the crane kale right here,
07:52 just kind of providing that little bit of weight
07:54 a little bit further up into the branches
07:56 so they don't look so perched.
07:59 And then I did end up using a bit of everything.
08:02 We've got this one right here, the Oklahoma red.
08:05 We've got the creeping Jenny kind of popped in
08:07 throughout the whole container.
08:09 Then we've got the orange pansies, the dusty miller.
08:11 It's just such a pretty blend.
08:13 See it along the backside here.
08:16 Oh yeah, you can see it way better on this side.
08:17 Look at that.
08:19 The detail's way better when we have it
08:21 in the shade a little bit more.
08:23 I do have this little extra branch.
08:24 I think I'm gonna pop that in right here.
08:26 And you guys, I actually ended up with two of the kale.
08:30 I just ripped them apart.
08:32 They're in a one gallon size container.
08:34 Just kind of tore them apart
08:35 if I needed to manipulate them a little bit more.
08:37 So I'll use these two in this container.
08:39 Okay, let's get the second one done.
08:41 (upbeat music)
08:43 (water splashing)
08:46 We're at the second set of containers here
09:02 at the entrance to the cut flower garden.
09:04 And these are large, large, big black square ones.
09:08 I did realize when we got out here
09:10 that I forgot to show you the finished product
09:12 of both of the first containers.
09:13 I'm just so excited about doing this today.
09:15 So we'll head back up there later.
09:16 But these I love.
09:18 I think they're the perfect structure and scale
09:20 for this area, just kind of indicating
09:21 a formal opening here.
09:23 And you know, the flower shed back there
09:25 is white with black lanterns, like black,
09:28 I don't know, carriage lights?
09:29 Is that what they're called?
09:30 Anyway, so I love that these are black
09:32 with the black obelisk in the center.
09:34 And you don't even have to have something growing on those
09:36 for those to be beautiful.
09:37 The summer containers.
09:39 They were awesome for a little while.
09:41 The flowers were gorgeous.
09:42 And then that sweet potato vine that I planted
09:44 in the center, and it looked so dinky
09:46 when I put it in there, just one.
09:48 And it just absolutely took over.
09:50 And you know, a person could be out here trimming on it
09:52 and keeping it under control a little bit.
09:54 I don't really, well, a lot of times those things
09:57 kind of fall through the cracks for us
09:58 'cause we've got a lot of other things going on.
10:00 And I don't really want that kind of maintenance
10:02 for containers.
10:03 So I did learn a lot about that particular
10:05 sweet potato vine.
10:06 You know, by the end, all you could see was that.
10:08 It had climbed up the obelisk.
10:09 It had climbed over the edges of the container
10:12 and it just looked like a big green sweet potato monster
10:14 out here.
10:15 So I'm so happy to see the containers again.
10:17 And this is what we're gonna film with today.
10:19 I think I might do a little bit of a tiered design.
10:22 You can see my cardboard sticking out
10:24 because I would like for the dusty miller to be higher
10:27 and kind of inside the obelisk.
10:29 And then I want to do four cabbage or kale.
10:32 Why do I always call them cabbage?
10:33 These are coral prints.
10:36 Aren't they beautiful?
10:39 So these are a little bit looser than the ones
10:41 that I used over on the east side.
10:43 They've got a little bit more fluff to them
10:45 and a little bit more pink in the center.
10:47 And then of course the serious dusty miller.
10:49 This is the last of it that I have.
10:51 I've kind of just been trying to stretch it
10:53 through several of our containers this fall.
10:56 We've got some Ivy here and some lemony yellow pansies.
11:00 I think that will be a bright, fresh mix out here.
11:03 So again, we did not clear out all of the soil.
11:06 In fact, you can see some of the sweet potato vine
11:07 coming back up, but I'm not too worried about that
11:09 because it will die the first whiff of, you know,
11:12 a colder night that we get.
11:14 So I'm going to do a barrier, like a soil barrier,
11:17 kind of on the outside of this obelisk
11:19 and then put more soil in before we plant.
11:21 I wonder if there's like a big old potato in here.
11:24 Oh, there's some roots.
11:25 Yeah, that probably still won't stop it from coming up,
11:27 but took care of a little bit of it at least.
11:29 Okay guys, I'm going to get these planted
11:30 and then I will stop and we'll take a look at both of them.
11:33 (upbeat music)
11:35 (upbeat music continues)
11:39 (upbeat music continues)
11:42 (upbeat music continues)
11:46 (upbeat music continues)
11:49 (upbeat music continues)
11:52 (upbeat music continues)
11:56 (upbeat music continues)
11:59 (upbeat music continues)
12:11 (upbeat music continues)
12:14 (upbeat music continues)
12:23 (upbeat music continues)
12:26 Oh, these are looking so fresh.
12:36 I love it.
12:37 Look at that.
12:38 Oh, you can still see the container,
12:40 but you can see some beautiful color and texture.
12:44 Because this is a square container, thus four sided,
12:47 and we see it from all four sides,
12:49 I just did the same thing on each side.
12:52 So I started with the cardboard circle in the center,
12:55 popped four Dusty Miller in.
12:56 I would have filled the whole thing
12:57 with Dusty Miller in the center,
12:58 but I only had eight plants left.
13:02 So I had to split them up between the two squares.
13:04 So I ended up putting a few little pansies in there,
13:07 which I love.
13:07 Like this is our centerpiece right here.
13:09 We don't need anything really tall and big in the center,
13:12 but it was fun just to pop some of that color back in there.
13:14 Then I did one cabbage per side, just centered it up.
13:19 And then I had actually had seven Ivy.
13:21 I counted eight pots.
13:23 And then when I started pulling them apart,
13:24 there was a dead one in the center of all,
13:27 well, what I thought was eight.
13:29 So I ended up putting a Koniknik
13:31 that I've had in the greenhouse since last winter
13:33 in a four inch container.
13:35 And it's a perennial.
13:35 It's like a woody ground cover shrub.
13:38 But I put that in one of the corners right there.
13:41 It's a pretty little plant.
13:42 I meant to plant this out by the pond,
13:44 and I still will after I'm done using it here.
13:46 And I think it's far enough apart from the Ivy
13:48 that it doesn't make that much difference.
13:49 And I located it on the backside of the pot.
13:51 So after the Ivy on all four corners,
13:53 there are three lemon yellow pansies
13:56 that kind of surround the backside of each Ivy.
13:59 Oh, so four kale, four dusty Miller,
14:03 and three, six, nine, 12, plus four, 16 pansies, four Ivy.
14:08 And each one of these, and these are huge.
14:09 These are 36 inch containers.
14:11 So I think that that filled it up beautifully.
14:14 I am gonna have to extend the drip line on these
14:16 because I need it to go all the way around the base,
14:19 like all the bottom plants.
14:20 And then I need to be able to bump it up into the center
14:22 and do a little swoop in there.
14:24 So I'm gonna probably need to extend it
14:25 about 18 inches or so on each one of these containers.
14:29 And that's what will finish it off.
14:31 But I did water them in with the hose
14:32 and kind of cleaned off the containers.
14:34 It looks so pretty right there.
14:35 And then all the flowers around it, still rocking.
14:38 Next Saturday, which is the first Saturday in October,
14:41 it's supposed to be 82.
14:42 So I think our garden is just gonna keep on going,
14:45 which is perfect because I need to get out
14:48 and I need to tag all the dahlias.
14:49 I need to ID all those and decide on all the ones
14:52 that we're going to be digging up this fall
14:55 before they start losing their blooms.
14:57 And our forecast keeps looking so great.
14:59 It keeps pushing it out and giving me more time to do that.
15:01 Anyway, those are the containers
15:03 I wanted to get done this morning.
15:04 And now I wanna go out and plant probably a few perennials,
15:07 some sedum, get those in the ground,
15:09 and then we'll be done for today.
15:10 All right, guys, I've got seven of these sedum
15:13 in the back of the gator right now.
15:14 We're gonna be planting them here along the stone pathway.
15:17 This is the variety called Midnight Velvet,
15:19 which if I'm remembering correctly, comes out next year.
15:23 Look at how beautiful these are.
15:25 And they get kind of big, like two feet,
15:27 maybe even a little bit taller than two feet.
15:29 And they have the really deeply colored foliage right there.
15:33 And then their flowers kind of come out mauve
15:35 or their buds come out mauve,
15:37 and then open to kind of a,
15:38 they call it a rose red or a rosy red.
15:41 It's kind of in the pink family to me.
15:43 But sedums are just awesome.
15:45 And I know we plant a lot of them in our garden,
15:47 but for good reason, they like dry conditions.
15:49 They like it hot.
15:50 They like full sun.
15:51 They do not wanna be fertilized.
15:52 There's one of those things that look good all season,
15:55 no deadheading required.
15:56 It's a once a season cutback,
15:57 and that is it for this plant.
15:59 And I appreciate plants like that so much.
16:02 So here's what I'm thinking.
16:04 Right along this rock pathway,
16:06 we've got some really beautiful things,
16:08 but this dark color always looks so beautiful
16:12 next to blue foliage.
16:14 Also next to this, this is the flavorette honey apricot.
16:18 So let me move that closer so you can kind of see.
16:20 Oh, oh, so pretty.
16:24 This is the perfect spot.
16:26 And then just to the left,
16:27 we have the Lichfield angel rose,
16:29 Lichfield, Lichfield.
16:31 So beautiful.
16:33 Oh my gosh.
16:34 Look at that.
16:35 When it's a little bit tighter bud,
16:36 you can see that kind of blush of apricot.
16:39 And then it kind of opens up that creamy yellow.
16:42 And then as they age, they turn more white.
16:46 They're just gorgeous.
16:48 Anyway, I feel like it's a really good spot for the Acetum.
16:50 I think that everything works really well,
16:53 and it helps bring that red element to the flower bed
16:56 'cause you know we always look for green, blue,
16:58 yellow, and red,
16:59 and we pretty much have it all in this space.
17:02 I'm gonna continue on this way a bit and this way.
17:05 So we've got the blue, the red,
17:07 and then if you look through,
17:07 you can see the lemony lace elderberry,
17:09 which eventually we're gonna have to draw
17:10 some of that yellow in.
17:12 But the blooms at this point could count for that,
17:15 but that's not always in bloom.
17:17 So we'll probably put something
17:18 with just a touch of yellow in it in here.
17:20 Okay, let's get these in the ground.
17:22,
17:23 (wind blowing)
17:25,
17:26 (wind blowing)
17:29 (footsteps)
17:31 (footsteps)
17:33 (footsteps)
17:36 (footsteps)
17:38 (footsteps)
17:40 (footsteps)
17:43 (footsteps)
17:45 (footsteps)
17:47 (wind blowing)
17:54 (footsteps)
18:00 (clank)
18:14 (footsteps)
18:16 (water running)
18:20 - All right, there they are all planted and watered in.
18:26 I only had to water them in very lightly
18:28 just to make sure the soil had settled
18:29 because the root balls were already wet.
18:32 Now for a situation like this,
18:34 usually if it was a normal perennial,
18:35 like let's say I was putting Veronica in
18:37 or something that just wants consistent water,
18:39 we would probably put a brown drip tube
18:41 right along the backside of the first row
18:44 and then along the backside of the second row.
18:46 But for sedum like this, for at least the first year,
18:48 we'll just put one line of brown drip tube between the two
18:52 and they can kind of share that water
18:54 and that should be plenty.
18:56 This side of the garden always holds onto
18:58 a lot of extra moisture anyway.
19:00 It's fairly hard pan, so it's something we have to monitor.
19:03 And you can see I ended up with nine here instead of seven.
19:06 I just thought maybe broadening that out a little bit
19:08 would be nice.
19:09 Usually in larger areas doing a little bit larger drifts
19:13 is a little bit more impactful.
19:14 And I like to start them off at kind of a point on one end.
19:17 And then when I end them,
19:19 I usually kind of end them on a little bit of a point too.
19:22 And that way we don't look like we're doing squares
19:24 or blocks.
19:25 So we can start our next drift of whatever we're gonna do
19:27 slightly in front of this one.
19:29 And then we'll take off this way.
19:31 And then this one, you know, it'll start right after it.
19:35 But I kinda wanna say these get three to four feet tall
19:37 and wide, so it'll be a really nice stair step down here.
19:39 Oh, I'm really pleased with that.
19:41 Oh, I love it.
19:42 Okay, so now we're just gonna wait for it
19:44 to either get overcast.
19:46 It's a little bit overcast right now, but not for long.
19:49 Or we'll wait till this evening
19:50 and we'll go look at the first containers
19:51 that we got done today.
19:53 All right, guys, it's been just a little bit.
19:55 There's still a tiny bit of sun in the area,
19:57 but the containers are for the most part in the shade.
19:59 And huge thank you to Paul and Bethany.
20:01 They came along and cleaned up the area,
20:03 especially around this container.
20:05 It had a columbine that had seeded itself
20:07 and there were some weeds and things like that
20:08 around the pot.
20:10 And they remulched the whole area around each pot.
20:12 It looks so nice.
20:13 Look at these.
20:14 I decided to bring up a couple of our pumpkins
20:16 that we harvested yesterday.
20:18 And I intend on bringing a whole bunch more up here.
20:21 And then I think I'm gonna do some corn stalks
20:23 on the columns right there.
20:24 I think that'll be really festive and fun.
20:27 But it gives you a little bit of a better idea
20:29 of how the containers look
20:31 when they're in a bit more shade, I think.
20:33 (child mumbling)
20:34 Oh, are you gonna drop your lion?
20:36 Don't drop your lion.
20:39 Samantha's keeping me company out here.
20:42 And then are we gonna go on a gator ride?
20:44 Maybe.
20:48 She's looking all fall in her cute sweater.
20:50 Does your sweater have fall leaves on it, babe?
20:54 Let's look.
20:55 It's got wheat and flowers.
21:00 So cute.
21:01 Yeah.
21:03 That is a flower.
21:10 It's cute.
21:11 (child mumbling)
21:14 Getting all comfy on that bench there?
21:16 Yeah, look at this area.
21:19 This this morning was just kind of a bit of a mess.
21:22 So it looks really nice and tidy.
21:24 And look at those plants.
21:25 Look how fun that is.
21:27 So this one ended up with just the one crow.
21:29 This is the most sad looking one of all.
21:32 But I don't wanna overdo with the crows.
21:34 So there's two in that one and one in this one.
21:37 If I happen upon some, I'll pick them up.
21:40 I mean, I could add maybe one or two more
21:42 to this arrangement here,
21:43 and then one more to the other side.
21:45 Bulk it up just a little bit.
21:46 But sometimes the little touches go a long way.
21:49 And I'm not a huge fan of a bunch of Halloween decorations.
21:53 Some years I'm more in the mood to do it,
21:55 but it's always non-scary things.
21:57 So black crows, not super scary.
22:00 I mean, we've got some paper bats on our window.
22:02 Hey, Samantha, did you put the bats on our window?
22:08 - Benjamin brought.
22:09 - Did Benjamin bring those out?
22:13 The black bats?
22:21 Oh, Bethany helped you.
22:26 Yeah, she did.
22:27 She helped you get the tub down, didn't she?
22:29 - And Benjamin brought it.
22:32 - And Benjamin brought it, nice.
22:34 Thank you for the tour.
22:36 Hey, did you do the hopscotch right here?
22:38 Wow.
22:54 Oh my goodness.
22:55 Amazing.
22:56 Yay, good job.
23:05 Okay, so here's a look from the backside.
23:07 It's just kind of a pattern repeat of the plants here.
23:10 You know, Dusty Miller, pansies, Creeping Jenny, kale.
23:13 And then I did another Creeping Jenny
23:15 and then started the whole sequence again.
23:18 And honestly, like it's kind of asymmetrical a bit looking,
23:22 so you could kind of get away
23:23 with doing whatever you wanted around the edges.
23:25 And here's this one from the backside.
23:29 And I love seeing little hints
23:31 of these gnarly looking branches coming through.
23:33 So cool.
23:34 - The baby's crying.
23:35 - The baby's crying?
23:37 Oh no, are you comforting him?
23:39 - Give him a bandaid.
23:42 - Oh, bandaid, where?
23:44 - Right there.
23:44 - Okay, well how about just a kiss?
23:47 All better.
23:48 Yeah, oh, you're gonna show the line of the bats, perfect.
23:55 Anyway guys, that is it for today.
23:56 Really happy with four more ball containers done, completed.
24:00 I think I'm gonna be tackling the one
24:02 by the chicken coop here, maybe tomorrow.
24:04 The Hartley containers, I ordered plants specifically
24:07 for those containers and they're just sitting
24:09 in the greenhouse because they still look so good.
24:11 I just got to show you.
24:12 Super Beena, Violet Ice, Super Chino Royal Velvet,
24:15 basically is what we're seeing at this point.
24:17 I mean, they're still rocking.
24:22 Looking so, so good.
24:25 I'm having a hard time wanting to pull these out.
24:27 So these will stay for a little while yet.
24:29 I mean, our forecast looks just about like it was today
24:31 for the next 10 days.
24:33 I don't think these are gonna go anywhere anytime quick.
24:37 And the artichokes ended up being super fun.
24:40 This is exactly what I was hoping they would do.
24:43 I knew they probably, I got them in so late
24:45 that they probably wouldn't form any kind of fruit.
24:48 But I was just hoping that these would form
24:50 a kind of a leaf canopy coming out of the cold frames
24:53 and that's exactly what they did.
24:55 I think it's a really interesting texture
24:57 and it kind of makes you want to come over
24:58 and be like, what in the world is that?
25:00 They're so cool.
25:02 And then this side, which is still in a bit more sun,
25:04 but look at those artichokes.
25:05 They're so neat.
25:07 And more of the beautiful purple flowers.
25:09 Anyway guys, now Samantha and I
25:12 are gonna go on a gator ride.
25:13 We're just gonna tool around the garden
25:15 and enjoy the evening.
25:16 Thank you so much for watching this video.
25:18 I hope you enjoyed it and we will see you in the next one.
