Motor Trend gets an exclusive first look at the 2019 Ford Edge ST before its debut at NAIAS! Detroit editor
Transcript
00:00 The Edge first came out in 2006.
00:08 It's currently on a generation that started for the '15 model year, but for '19 it gets
00:13 a fairly significant update.
00:16 And not only is there a new look to it, but behind me is a new addition to the lineup.
00:23 This is the Ford Edge ST.
00:25 And this marks the first time that Ford has put ST, its performance badging, onto an SUV.
00:33 So let's take a look at what this thing has.
00:36 First off, under the hood, it is a 2.7 liter V6.
00:41 This is EcoBoost engine, which means, of course, direct injection, and it means turbocharged.
00:46 It also means 335 horsepower and 380 pound feet of torque.
00:54 That is a lot of muscle underneath an SUV.
00:57 And it's mated to an eight-speed transmission, which Ford has done in-house.
01:01 The ST has its own unique grille.
01:04 We've got this blacked out honeycomb grille, and it continues down here, as opposed to
01:10 on the regular new Edge, you are going to see more of a slat grille.
01:15 The other thing they've done here is they want to make the ST look meaner.
01:19 This is, of course, a performance crossover.
01:22 And so we've got the color molding in here, matching.
01:27 And let's talk about the color itself.
01:29 This is called, appropriately enough, Ford Performance Blue.
01:34 And this color is only on the ST.
01:36 Okay, these are optional, 21 inch.
01:40 Check out the red calipers there.
01:42 Okay, now we're inside the new ST.
01:44 We've got the ST badging here, and we've got special stitching that you will not find in
01:49 the regular one.
01:50 That stitching continues here on the seats.
01:53 They are made by Ford, but they're unique to this particular car.
01:58 And they have extra bolstering, because this is a car that is made to be tossed around.
02:03 Here we've got a new e-shifter.
02:05 Now the e-shifter is across the lineup, but here on the sport button, that's where everything
02:11 is going to change.
02:12 It's going to change throttle response, steering, all of the algorithms that you want when you
02:17 start tossing a car around.
02:20 In the stability control, you can go into a relaxed mode, which will let you spin the
02:25 car out, let the tail fly out a bit more.
02:28 And of course, you can always turn the stability control off completely.
02:31 The paddles, there's paddles across the lineup, but in the ST, the paddles make it fully manual.
02:39 It's also got a steering assist that is new to the Ford brand.
02:44 And this is if you're going down the road and you suddenly have to veer around something,
02:48 you give the wheel some input and it will assist to help you avoid a collision.
02:53 What we really are looking forward to is taking this thing out, not only on just regular good,
02:59 great driving roads, but on a track.
03:02 Because the whole thinking behind an ST is that people are moving out of cars, and they're
03:09 moving out of performance cars, and they're going into crossovers and SUVs.
03:14 But we still want to have fun driving.
03:17 And when it goes on sale this summer, we'll see how many people agree that this is the
03:21 way to go.
