00:00 This time on Roadkill, we're buying a '73 Hornet of Craigslist, and we're going rally
00:06 racing until they throw us out!

00:34 This all started when we had an opportunity to do something that I've wanted to do for,
00:38 no exaggeration, 20 years, which is a rally cross, which is like an autocross, but in
00:44 dirt.
00:45 And so I went on Facebook and I told the fans, "Hey, we want to go rally cross racing.
00:49 What will you sell us?"
00:50 And so, we came up with this '73 AMC Hornet, and it's run in the Mint 400, the Nora 1000
00:58 three times, and it even has off-road legacy dating way back into the early '70s.
01:03 It was like a dream come true to be able to get a car that's fully caged front to back.
01:09 It's got dual king shocks on every corner.
01:11 It's got a Ford nine inch in the back.
01:13 It's got a Dugan's built 360 AMC under the hood, a 727 Mopar automatic transmission,
01:18 and it's going to be a lot of fun if we can actually get it going.
01:21 It's been sitting here, I think, since 2012.
01:24 It's actually street legal.
01:25 And look at the license plate, Nora 1000.
01:28 That's pretty cool.
01:29 Oh, we have a spare tire.
01:35 This is too nice for us.
01:36 Trans cooler, oil cooler.
01:38 The shocks cost more than my first car.
01:41 Oh yeah.

01:45 This thing is fully caged up.
01:46 And the welds are just crappy enough to be roadkill, all right.
01:49 It has four shocks up front.
01:51 That means we can jump it four times higher than a stock car.
01:54 Oh, look at the aluminum radiator.

01:59 Oil's black, but full.

02:04 Trans fluid, ooh, it's way over full.
02:07 So we need to fire it up to find out what the truth is there.

02:26 All we need is fuel.

03:54 I don't need to clean it anymore.

04:05 That fuel line leaks pretty bad right there.

04:07 I think this AM line is done.

04:12 It's leaking out the AM line.
04:13 It's probably going to do that in the entire car.
04:15 The problem is that the California gas has a whole lot of alcohol in it, and it ends up
04:20 just eating through the rubber AM line.
04:24 The rubber's inside this braided steel.
04:26 Yeah.
04:27 We're going to have to deal with that.
04:30 I'm about to pull the seat out of the car because not only is the bulk of the wildlife
04:35 that wants to harm me under this seat, but so is a transmission core line that is leaking
04:40 everywhere.
04:44 Not for steel.
04:47 Challenge accepted.
04:53 This is brake line.
04:54 We're turning this into transmission line.
04:57 This was Dave's idea.
04:58 It's brilliant.
04:59 This is what's called removing really good, safe AM line and installing rubber line with
05:12 sketchy connections.
05:13 Right there.
05:14 And that's good.
05:15 Well, we're actually going to put this on the ground, fire it up, and try and drive
05:34 it, aren't we?
05:35 Damn right.
05:36 The tires we got for this are a Cooper STT Pro, which is their awesome mud tire.
05:44 We got 31 by 10 50 15s all the way around.
05:47 The wheels on the back are 15 by eights and the fronts are sevens.
05:50 It's going to look tough.
05:56 Before I put the tire on, I should show you all the suspension stuff this thing has going
05:59 on up front.
06:01 This is basically the same suspension concept as a stock AMC.
06:06 It's a stock upper control arm.
06:07 They did put the springs on top of the upper control arm on these things.
06:10 It's all beefed up up here.
06:12 They've welded a bunch of reinforcement into both control arms.
06:15 There's a big strut rod here with a giant Heim joint to keep it from deflecting.
06:19 The control arms modified with a thread in ball joint to take a Mopar type joint.
06:24 And it has a Dodge van spindle and brakes on it.
06:28 And of course the beef here for the massive remote reservoir King shocks.
06:33 So kind of stock but heavily beefed.
06:43 Now we can drive it and find out what's wrong with it.

06:46 Look at all the switches I can play with.
06:49 We got a lot to do.

08:23 The issue we're having here is that basically the car won't move.

08:34 The issue we're having here is that basically the car won't move.
08:35 It acts like it has no trans fluid in it, but it's overflowing out of the tube.
08:36 It's something to do with the trans cooler being mounted up here on the roll cage, where
08:37 it's got an air bubble trapped in it and the transmission's not pumping it through.
08:38 At least that's our guess.

10:46 to check the transmission fluid,
10:48 if you turn the engine off or put it in park,
10:50 it just launches fluid out of the dipstick tube
10:53 all over the exhaust, which is very safe.
10:56 So right now we're struggling to find out
10:58 do we have enough fluid in there?

14:50 which means that it'll explode.
14:52 That's partially because it's got a cooler underneath the hatch.
14:55 It's partially because the skid plate is trapping all the heat.
14:58 So all we can do right now is pull the hatch off
15:01 so that we aren't personally overheating
15:03 and so that we can do the transmission a favor too.
