Hot Rivet Installation at Quick Draw Jeep Restoration.

00:00 I'm going to do a quick demonstration on hot rivets.
00:03 A couple things you need is this backer tool.
00:05 It's got a dome to it.
00:08 It'll dome the back side of the rivet.
00:10 Preston's got an air hammer.
00:13 This one's got a flat attachment.
00:14 You can get different attachments,
00:16 depending on what rivets you're doing.
00:17 That just holds the head from moving off to the side.
00:21 Anyway, we'll just throw some heat to it.
00:24 And as he holds the rivet in place,
00:26 we're going to do one of these from underneath.
00:28 He needs to have it all the way tight when he starts to hammer.
00:33 Because once it's cherry red, and if it's down at all
00:38 and he hammers, it won't be all the way tight.
00:40 So we'll hurry and--
00:42 [HAMMERING]
00:44 [HISSING]
00:46 [HISSING]
00:49 [HISSING]
00:56 And we just use a small torch to get these red.
00:59 Some guys will preheat them and then
01:00 try to put them in the hole.
01:02 But that's a little more scrambling,
01:04 trying to get them in there before they cool down.
01:08 So we'll just take the small torch attachment
01:11 and throw the heat to it.
01:14 It's actually a welding tip.
01:16 Yeah, it's just a welding tip.
01:26 Just try to get the whole thing nice and sparkly.
01:31 And if we don't get it in one shot,
01:37 we can always heat it and do it some more.
01:40 And once you think you've got it hot enough,
01:55 grab the tool, press them with your throat.
01:57 [HISSING]
02:00 Yep, there it is.
02:21 Definitely a two-man job and three if you need a video.
02:25 Yeah.
