00:00 Welcome to Motor Trend's Monster Performance SUV Shootout.
00:12 The competitors that we have are the BMW X5 M, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and the 2012
00:19 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.
00:22 As a group, there's more than 1,500 horsepower here.
00:26 As a group, zero to 60 times are between 4.1 and 4.6 seconds.
00:31 [00:00:59] [silence] [00:01:23]
00:46 [00:02:15] [silence] [00:02:33]
01:08 Those are impressive numbers by any standard, but these are SUVs.
01:22 They have to be able to tow, and they have to be able to haul people.
01:26 Sure, we know these things can go fast, but we want to find out if they can haul fast.
01:33 Come along with us as we try to find out who's the new king of the hill.
01:37 If we have some fun along the way, so be it.
01:41 The first part of our test included tow testing, where we hooked up three different car trailers,
01:47 one for each competitor, and they had to tow a small sibling.
01:51 The X5 M was towing a Z4, the Cayenne Turbo, a Boxster Spyder, and the SRT8, a 500C.
02:00 Of the three, only the SRT8 had a dedicated tow setting, but they all performed very well.
02:07 As you might expect, the BMW's 555 horsepower engine, load sensing suspension, and backup
02:13 camera made quick work of the Z4.
02:16 Likewise, the Cayenne Turbo pulled with confidence, and the active rear air suspension kept the
02:21 nose-heavy load level and calm.
02:24 The SRT8 does offer responsive active dampening, but only has coil rear springs, so we had
02:30 to be very careful about trailer tongue weight.
02:33 But before we get lost in these details about towing, let's not forget these are all specialty
02:38 performance packages.
02:40 Let's go see how they do at the track.
02:42 Although we're here at the track, we want this to be a real world test, and that means
02:46 putting passengers, a baby seat, and a ton of groceries in the back and see how they
02:50 do.
02:53 First up, the BMW X5 M.
03:00 Just going through a couple of the first turns.
03:04 Love the way the engine holds that power, holds the revs, dives in a little bit of braking,
03:09 and then the torque vectoring rear differential just seems to grab with all sorts of force.
03:16 It just doesn't want to get out of shape.
03:34 It just doesn't allow, even if I do something stupid.
03:38 Next up, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
03:42 This thing is, it's deceptively refined.
03:45 You think it's going to be a little bit of a slug, but it rips up.
03:50 Yeah, this is impressive.
03:53 Just how settled and balanced and how I can feel the all-wheel drive system channeling
04:01 between each of the wheels and tires, and then when I get completely screwed up, it
04:05 completely saves my butt.
04:13 It roars to life so easily.
04:24 And finally, Jeep's Grand Cherokee SRT8.
04:33 Pirellis do a great job of just gripping into the corners.
04:39 It's a wonderful feel.
04:41 There seems to be just something a little bit loose in the back end.
04:45 It just feels like it's ready to dance if I do something too horribly wrong.
04:52 But on these straights, it's just too impossible not to just flat-foot it.
04:58 Yeah, just a little wobbly.
05:02 It just feels a little bit wobbly when I get on the brakes a little too hard or I get on
05:07 the throttle a little too hard.
05:09 Just wants to do that little wobble that lets me know I haven't quite done a very smooth
05:13 job through the corners.
05:22 Certainly different.
05:27 So we finished all our testing.
05:28 We've had a chance to tow, we've had a chance to do quarter-mile testing, and we've had
05:33 a chance to do some closed-course racing around a track.
05:36 And in the end, after a hotly contested debate, just by a nose, the winner of this competition
05:43 is the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
05:46 Did a lot of things well, has incredible refinement, incredible power and response and chassis
05:52 feel, and the interplay, the integration between the dynamics of the vehicle, give it the overall
05:58 win for this competition.
05:59 Thanks for watching.
