00:10 It's the typical story growing up as a kid, seeing the trucks going up and
00:20 down the street.
00:21 And it was my dream and became a passion.
00:25 And it's not just a career, it's my life.
00:29 [MUSIC]
00:36 >> We're at the Santa Fe Springs Regional Training Center.
00:38 Firefighters can come in and hone their skills on ventilation,
00:42 forcible entry, vehicle extrication.
00:45 [MUSIC]
00:48 >> They design vehicles for the consumer.
00:51 They don't design it for the firefighter.
00:52 >> Say there's not enough room and we need to remove the door completely.
00:56 We can.
00:57 [MUSIC]
01:05 >> Got a lot of thoughts going through your mind that first time.
01:09 [MUSIC]
01:19 [BLANK_AUDIO]
01:27 >> Attacking a car in general is just a way a lot.
01:30 The parts that are involved in making them nowadays are complicated.
01:35 And the tools that are required to enforce them are way above the capacity that a human being has.
01:41 [MUSIC]
01:51 >> Now look at all the access we have.
02:03 >> With practice and with experience, your nerves kind of calm down and
02:08 you know what needs to be done.
02:09 And as part of a team, everybody gets in there and gets the job done.
02:12 [MUSIC]
02:16 >> Depending on how long the fire's been burning, what it's presenting from the outside,
02:19 it kind of tells us what we're gonna be able to do.
02:21 [MUSIC]
02:24 And then once we get up here and we look and then we can start seeing,
02:26 you see fire coming through the roof in a certain area,
02:29 you have to really start weighing out how long the fire's been burning,
02:32 how much roof has been compromised.
02:34 [MUSIC]
02:39 >> We have fire underneath, they're venting out the heat.
02:42 [MUSIC]
02:46 >> Ventilation's kind of a bread and butter tactic of what a truck company does on a fire situation.
02:52 [MUSIC]
02:56 >> We're problem solvers.
02:57 Most of the time we're gonna create the problem.
02:59 We're there to fix the problem, as big or as small as it may be.
03:02 [MUSIC]
03:05 >> Fortunately, bad things happen to good people.
03:07 As first responders, we're the first ones to roll up on that.
03:10 >> Let's talk a little bit about fire behavior and a little bit about flash over.
03:14 Flash over is rapid fire spread between the growth phase of fire and
03:18 the fully developed phase.
03:19 It's where all the contents of the room are on fire at once.
03:23 So if you're in here and it's fully involved, there's no way you're gonna survive.
03:26 [MUSIC]
03:56 >> You bond with these guys, they're your second family.
03:59 And around the station, it's a great time.
04:01 And then when the bell goes off, everybody's working.
04:04 So we don't have to turn it on, turn it off.
04:06 [MUSIC]
04:16 >> That was just when I think it's time to back out, he says, hold on, not just yet.
04:20 So based on experience, that makes him a man I wanna follow, for sure.
04:25 >> I would hope I'm a real man, but
04:27 you can ask the rest of the other guys out here or not.
04:30 We're only defined on what we do in life.
04:34 My job is I'm a firefighter, but I'm also a husband and a father.
04:39 So hopefully those kinda make me a real man.
