00:16 What's up? Paul here from Guitar World and today we're going to be checking out
00:19 a beautiful guitar that offers so much at an affordable price point. The Donner
00:24 DST 400 electric guitar. Let's check it out.
00:29 [Music]
00:31 Donner makes a bunch of electric guitars as well as numerous other musical
00:35 products but the DST 400 is clearly the most important member of their DST family of electrics.
00:42 This model starts with an eye-catching alder body with a high gloss finish with the typical
00:48 S-style contours and curves found on this type of guitar. It's bolt-on AAA. Canadian maple neck
00:54 features a laurel fingerboard and you can see it is outfitted with vintage style tuning machines.
01:00 The neck has an easy to play C-shape profile that's satin finished with 22 frets. Electronics
01:07 for the DST 400 consists of a humbucker and two single coils making it a popular HSS configuration
01:15 that many players love to use. What's cool is the humbucker has a hotter output for searing lead tones.
01:22 [Music]
01:37 The DST 400 features a pushable coil split system or the humbucker. Now this is achieved
01:43 when you locate the bottom tone control and then just push on it to get that split coil sound.
01:50 Leaving it in place you get the full humbucking tone or if you pull up on the tone control you get
01:57 the classic single coil spank. You can get up to seven different tones whether you're in single
02:02 coil mode or humbucker mode using the five-way switch. There's also a two-point tremolo with a
02:08 cold rolled steel block to produce warm and powerful sounds. Okay let me take you through
02:15 the guitar's different sounds that you can get using this configuration of a humbucker and two
02:20 single coils. As I said before it's also a push-pull circuit so you can get some of that single coil
02:26 sound. Now obviously the humbucker adds a little more rock sound to it so with the five-way position
02:32 on this switch all the way down it's just over here at the humbucker. But if I use the tone
02:38 control over here and pop it up what happens is it splits the coil and it uses this coil
02:43 so you get that single coil sound just in the bridge. And if I put it back down then you have
02:48 the full humbucker. And as I move you know up up here in the in-between sound this next position
02:54 I have the humbucker and the single coil and then in the middle I have just the middle position
03:02 pickup and then this position I get both these sounds and over here I just get that neck pickup.
03:09 Now keep in mind if I'm using the split coil sound now when I'm down here it's just that in
03:16 the bridge and when I move it over here I kind of get these two like that split coil sound.
03:22 So it gets a nice you know bluesy type of sound and very very nice chimey cleans. And of course
03:28 knocking it back down then of course you're back to here using the humbucker along with that in the
03:32 middle or just a humbucker for more of that rock tone. So with that let's take a listen
03:38 starting with just using the humbucker sounds on a clean channel so you get to hear the range of
03:44 tones.
03:46 So
03:56 so
04:03 so
04:15 so
04:29 so
04:43 so
04:57 so
05:11 so

05:38 so
05:52 Now let's hear the DST-400 with a few rock tones. This is where the guitar really opens up and shine.
06:06 So
06:20 so
06:42 so
07:08 The DST-400 is also available in two finishes vintage dark green which I have here and classic
07:15 black. Not to mention for its price this guitar comes equipped with a water resistant gig bag,
07:22 a high quality instrument cable and guitar strap and allen wrenches for any adjustments.
07:39 The Donner DST-400 electric guitar not only has a wealth of rich and balanced tones but it's also
07:45 lightweight and plays easily and is a great guitar for any beginner or intermediate players
07:50 because of its enticing value. Definitely check it out.
