00:30 author Tom Quinn provided insights into the current stance of the royal family towards
00:36 the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
00:38 Over the past year, the couple Harry and Meghan, who now reside in Monsanto, California, have
00:44 launched a series of criticisms against the royal family.
00:47 In their Netflix docuseries, Prince Harry accused his family of harboring unconscious
00:52 bias and expressed fear of his brother, Prince William, describing an incident where William
00:59 allegedly screamed and shouted at him.
01:03 In early 2023, Prince Harry claimed in his book "Spare" that his brother physically
01:08 assaulted him at Nottingham Cottage within the Kensington Palace grounds.
01:19 So with all of this going on, with all of this information being revealed, the royal
01:24 correspondent Tom Quinn from Channel 5 suggested that the members of the royal family now view
01:30 Prince Harry as a loose cannon.
01:33 But the thing is, not only in the UK, but also in the United States, where Prince Harry
01:38 and Meghan Markle currently reside, the couple's public perception has taken a significant
01:45 hit, not just from people inside of the royal family, but also from the general public.
01:51 Their popularity in the US has reached an all-time low in recent months.
01:56 Prince Harry's approval rate plummeted to -10 in early 2023, while his wife Meghan experienced
02:03 an even lower rating of -17.
02:06 And this Channel 5 documentary delves into the diminishing popularity of Meghan and Harry
02:12 in the United States, and also explores their relationship with the royal family.
02:17 Tom Quinn also had this to say, "The royal family will be deeply upset by the fact that
02:22 they have this loose cannon someone William was once close to."
02:27 Tom Quinn believes that the royals perceive Meghan as someone who's determined to destroy
02:32 the monarchy also.
02:34 He added, "Harry has married this woman who seems to be encouraging him to destroy the
02:40 royal family."
02:41 Now despite all the numerous interviews that the Duke and Duchess have given regarding
02:46 their experiences within the royal family institution, Tom Quinn asserts that senior
02:52 working royals have never responded directly to these allegations.
02:57 And he said this, "In line with tradition and sensibly, the royal family will never
03:03 say anything beyond statements like, 'Recollections may vary regarding these events.'"
03:10 For instance, following their interview with Oprah Winfrey back in 2021, Queen Elizabeth
03:15 II released a statement acknowledging that "some recollections may vary" concerning
03:22 the various allegations made by the couple.
03:25 Now also, according to reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say that they have said
03:30 everything that they need to say about the royal family.
03:33 But critics of the couple say that they'll believe it when they see it.
03:38 Or in this case, they'll believe it when they don't see it.
03:41 The eyes of the public are definitely going to be glued to Meghan and Harry as everybody
03:46 is wondering what's their next big move.
03:55 We're about to dive deep into Meghan Markle's toxic relationship with her sister.
04:07 It's pretty surprising to think about how much Meghan Markle's life has changed.
04:12 She used to live in Toronto, Canada and act in a popular TV show called Suits.
04:25 And then she fell in love with Prince Harry and became part of the royal family.
04:30 Their wedding was seen as a very beautiful moment, even for those watching it on TV.
04:37 They felt like they were really a part of it.
04:45 And then fast forward to January of 2020, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry surprised the
04:50 whole world by saying that they're going to be leaving the royal family.
05:01 And this decision led Meghan's father, Thomas, as well as her half-sister, Samantha, to talk
05:08 to the media a lot more.
05:10 And Meghan's relationship with her half-sister got quite messy.
05:23 Before Meghan Markle became an actress on Suits, she grew up in Los Angeles, California,
05:28 and she attended a private school.
05:30 Meghan's mom, Doria Ragland, had been supportive of her, and Meghan made sure that her mother
05:37 was a significant part of her new royal life.
05:42 But when it comes to Meghan's half-sister, it's a different story.
05:46 They don't seem to have a good relationship at all.
05:49 Like Samantha Markle, Meghan's half-sister has spoken about Meghan on several occasions.
05:55 And in a documentary called Thomas Markle, My Story, in it, Samantha Markle expressed
06:01 her disappointment in Meghan and Prince Harry leaving the royal family.
06:06 And this is what she had to say, and I quote, "With Meghan and Harry separating from the
06:11 royals, it's disappointing to me because she actually got every girl's dream.
06:17 Every young girl wanted to become a princess, and she got that, and now she's tossing that
06:22 away.
06:23 It looks like she's tossing that away for money."
06:26 Now when Meghan and Harry had their much-anticipated interview with Oprah in March of 2021, Meghan
06:33 shared that she had suffered from depression and she was desperately seeking help.
06:44 Samantha Markle, however, didn't have much sympathy about Meghan Markle saying that.
06:48 She actually went on to criticize Meghan for using depression as an excuse and claimed
06:53 Meghan had treated her poorly.
06:56 Samantha even wrote a book titled The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister.
07:09 And Meghan Markle had mentioned during her interview with Oprah that it had been about
07:14 20 years since they had any significant contact.
07:18 Meghan ended up disputing Samantha's claim of having a relationship.
07:22 She says that "Nuh-uh, we didn't even have a relationship.
07:24 What's Samantha talking about?"
07:25 This is what Meghan said in her own words, "I think it would be very hard to tell all
07:30 when you don't know me."
07:32 Samantha, however, argues that they in fact did know each other and they had college graduation
07:39 photo together as proof.
07:41 Meghan Markle believes that Samantha Markle is in fact seeking attention and she's just
07:47 trying to get famous.
07:49 Meghan shared with Oprah that Samantha started using the last name Markle and became way
07:55 more involved in the public eye after Meghan became famous through her relationship with
08:01 Prince Harry.
08:02 Meghan went on to clarify that she grew up as an only child and she last saw Samantha
08:07 about 18 or 19 or so, maybe 20 years prior, with a 10 year gap before that interaction.
08:15 And it appeared that Samantha did not like this at all because Samantha ended up suing
08:20 Meghan, alleging defamation over Meghan's statement in the Oprah interview where she
08:25 called herself an only child.
08:27 However, a Florida judge dismissed the lawsuit in early 2023.
08:33 The judge ruled that Meghan was just expressing her opinion about her childhood and her relationship
08:38 with her half-sibling.
08:40 And since that statement was a pure expression of opinion, it couldn't be proven false in
08:46 a legal sense, leading to the dismissal of the lawsuit.
08:50 So yeah, this is getting pretty nasty.
08:54 And Samantha Markle has also said that she's going to make a counterclaim to try to sue
08:58 Meghan again.
09:00 Who knows if it's going to go through this time.
09:03 But yeah, when you look at their relationship, it's a lot of she said, she said.
09:08 Prince William and Kate Middleton can't stand what Harry and Meghan have said about the
09:12 royal family and were prepared to take a firm stance against anything else they said that
09:19 they believed was untrue.
09:20 It was recently made public that Prince William and Kate Middleton were determined to push
09:26 the palace to issue a strong and assertive response following Prince Harry and Meghan
09:31 Markle's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
09:35 During the interview, the couple, Harry and Meghan, made allegations that an unidentified
09:39 member of the royal family had raised concerns about the potential skin colour of their unborn
09:45 son Archie at the time.
09:48 Meghan Markle asserted that there were multiple discussions centered around the topic of Archie's
09:54 skin colour.
10:02 And then after that, following the broadcast of the interview in the United Kingdom, Prince
10:05 William and Kate Middleton held discussions with palace officials to strategize their
10:12 response to the incendiary allegations made by Harry and Meghan, as described by Valentin
10:19 Lowe in his book, Courtiers, which he released some excerpts for the Times.
10:25 And according to Valentin Lowe, the initial draft statement did not include the now famous
10:30 phrase "some recollections may vary".
10:34 And the statement was released by the late Queen Elizabeth II, and read like this.
10:39 The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few
10:44 years have been for Harry and Meghan.
10:47 The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.
10:51 Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed
10:57 by the family privately.
10:58 Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved family members.
11:03 According to an insider that was quoted in Valentin Lowe's book, there was a milder
11:09 version of the statement under discussion.
11:12 The internal debate revolved around whether to take the high road and extend an olive
11:17 branch by referring to Harry and Meghan as much-loved members of the family, or to intervene
11:24 and express a different perspective on the matter completely.
11:28 Despite reservations about engaging in a back and forth with Meghan and Harry, William and
11:33 Kate made their stance very clear about this.
11:37 So the insider had told Valentin Lowe this.
11:41 They wanted it toughened up a bit.
11:43 They were both of one mind that we needed something that said that the institution did
11:50 not accept a lot of what had been said.
11:53 William had stressed that they come up with a forceful way of "making sure that we are
12:01 saying that this does not stand."
12:04 Then, according to the insider, "It was Kate who clearly made the point.
12:09 History will judge the statement, and unless this phrase or a phrase like it is included,
12:17 everything that they said will be taken as true."
12:21 And according to the source, this incident demonstrates the remarkable strength and resilience
12:27 hidden beneath the surface of Kate Middleton.
12:30 The source also mentioned that the current Princess of Wales possesses a strategic mindset,
12:37 and she's patiently pursuing her life's purpose with the acknowledgement that she
12:43 may in fact be Queen one day.
12:46 But hey, on the other hand, some supporters of Meghan and Harry are wondering if it was
12:52 actually Kate or even William who made the comments about Archie's skin colour, hence
12:57 their firm stance on it.
13:06 If it wasn't for the Queen Elizabeth signing off on changing the statement, we definitely
13:12 would have seen a much different statement released by the palace.
13:17 And yeah, things probably would have went completely different.
13:24 Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Markle, wants to meet his grandchildren before it's too
13:29 late.
13:30 And he absolutely can't stand that Meghan Markle is stopping him from seeing his grandchildren.
13:39 Despite being caught taking fake photos for money before Meghan and Prince Harry's wedding,
13:44 and repeatedly criticising the couple on TV, Thomas says that he has done nothing wrong.
13:57 In an interview on Good Morning Britain, this is what Thomas had to say.
14:08 In California, I can actually sue to see Archie and Lillibet, but I don't want to do that.
14:18 There's nothing that points to say I'm a bad guy.
14:22 Thomas also stressed that he is very loving as a father and Meghan in fact knows this,
14:30 and he firmly believes that there is no good reason for the way he's being treated by
14:34 Meghan.
14:41 Thomas who divorced Meghan Markle's mom, Doria Ragland, back in 1987 after 7 years of
14:47 marriage, mentioned that he observed Meghan change completely as she got older.
14:53 He went on to say this, in reference to the current drama between them now.
15:05 I never saw the kind of woman she turned into.
15:08 I'm shocked.
15:14 And then from there, Thomas added these comments.
15:18 I think she has an influence on Harry more than he does on her.
15:22 I'm always here for her.
15:23 I still love her.
15:25 I'll love her forever.
15:26 That will never change.
15:27 But I want her to reach out to me and let me see my grandkids.
15:33 Then interestingly, Thomas Markle compared his situation with Meghan to King Charles
15:38 and his situation with Harry.
15:40 And this is what he had to say specifically.
15:42 King Charles has done nothing wrong too, and he has denied the kids as well as I am.
15:47 Thomas Markle had a stroke in 2022 and it was a very scary time.
15:53 He hasn't seen Meghan Markle in 5 years.
15:56 He wasn't there at the royal wedding, also because of this whole scandal with stage photos.
16:02 And on top of that, he leaked a private letter from Meghan to the press.
16:07 And Meghan is also not on good terms with her half-sister Samantha Markle, who took
16:13 legal action against her for defamation in 2022.
16:29 And when it comes to that Oprah interview that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did back
16:33 in 2021, Meghan referred to her father's involvement with the paparazzi as an "unforgivable
16:40 betrayal."
16:41 At that time, Meghan also had this to say.
16:44 I look at Archie.
16:45 I think about this child and I genuinely can't imagine doing anything to intentionally cause
16:50 pain to my child.
16:52 I can't imagine it.
16:53 It's so hard for me to reconcile that.
17:02 Thomas Markle also had said that he tried to fix their broken relationship multiple
17:07 times in the past, but nothing worked.
17:11 And he also mentioned sending Meghan Markle flowers for her birthday back in 2021, but
17:16 he didn't receive any response at all.
17:19 And this is such a tricky situation because here you have a father, Meghan Markle's
17:25 dad, also a grandfather, and he's getting older and getting more sick as the days go
17:31 by and he's not able to see his grandchildren.
17:34 Then again, on Meghan's side, it's like you sold her out pretty much.
17:39 Like Meghan, your own daughter, Thomas, like you sold her out to the tabloids and have
17:45 said a lot of things about her publicly and you're going to find fault with her for not
17:51 allowing you to see her grandchildren and not getting involved in her life?
17:55 I don't know.
17:56 It seems a little hypocritical.
