00:00 Hey GQ, I'm Olivia Rodrigo, and these are my 10 essentials.
00:05 [upbeat music]
00:07 This isn't playing around,
00:11 this is like an industrial strength weighted blanket.
00:14 I think someone gave me one of these for Christmas one year.
00:17 Now I get everyone else this for Christmas
00:19 'cause it's like the best gift I've ever been given.
00:21 Some people hate it,
00:22 some people say it feels like suffocating,
00:24 but to me it's just the best type of suffocation.
00:27 I love it.
00:28 Every time I get into a hotel bed,
00:30 I get in and I'm like, hmm, something's not right
00:33 because I'm missing this.
00:35 And it's actually very cumbersome to travel with,
00:37 so I sometimes just have to do without it.
00:39 I don't know how you'd put this in a little carry-on.
00:41 [laughs]
00:43 I feel so safe right now.
00:44 This is very important.
00:48 This is my actual journal.
00:50 It's kind of scary to have it out in the open here.
00:53 I'm so terrified of losing my journals,
00:55 that's my worst fear.
00:56 When I was kind of having trouble
00:58 overcoming lots of the pressure
00:59 of making a sophomore record,
01:01 I read The Artist's Way
01:02 and one of the big tenets of The Artist's Way
01:04 is doing your morning pages.
01:06 So it's like three pages, longhand,
01:09 stream of consciousness in the morning.
01:11 Like first thing you do when you wake up.
01:12 I think for me it's just nice
01:14 to be able to write something down and not judge it.
01:17 In the moment, I think that's the whole point
01:18 of doing the morning pages,
01:19 is just to be like,
01:20 this is stream of consciousness, what I'm feeling.
01:22 I'm not gonna judge it too harshly
01:24 or wonder if it's gonna make any money
01:26 or be criticized or whatever.
01:27 There's something really lovely about that.
01:29 I feel like I've been pretty diligently
01:32 keeping some sort of journal or diary
01:35 since I was like 13 years old.
01:37 And so I just have this like Rolodex
01:39 of all of my feelings for a long time.
01:41 And it's nice to kind of look back at issues
01:42 that I thought were gonna be world ending
01:45 and be like, oh, that worked out totally fine.
01:47 It made me who I am.
01:48 It kind of just like puts things into perspective, you know.
01:51 So these are the Guts rings.
01:55 Rings in general are a huge essential for me.
01:58 I don't go anywhere without these rings.
02:00 I feel very naked without them.
02:01 If I ever go on vacation or something and get tan,
02:04 I have like weird tan lines on my hands
02:06 'cause I refuse to take my rings off.
02:07 My producer's wife, Emily, actually made these.
02:09 She's an incredible jewelry designer.
02:10 I named the album Guts for many different reasons.
02:13 I love the word.
02:14 I think it has so many cool meanings.
02:17 It means intuition.
02:19 It means courage.
02:20 Spilling your guts is just like
02:22 telling all your secrets to everyone,
02:23 which I feel like is just very synonymous with songwriting.
02:26 And it's just a cool four letter word.
02:28 I think it looks cool.
02:28 It's very like evocative, I don't know.
02:30 They all are kind of sentimental to me.
02:32 This one, my producer Dan got for me for Christmas
02:36 and he's one of my closest friends.
02:37 My parents got me this one for my 18th birthday
02:39 at some vintage store and I think it's really special.
02:41 This one, my makeup artist on High School Musical,
02:44 I was filming this show and I was really close with her
02:47 and she helped me through a lot.
02:49 And she got me this ring when we wrapped
02:51 and it says, "Write the songs of your heart."
02:54 And on the inside it says, "Love Heidi and Dottie June,"
02:57 which is her dog, her little French bulldog.
02:59 Actually left for the Grammys two years ago
03:03 and I forgot my rings at home and I had to freak out.
03:06 And luckily someone was still home
03:08 and I made them go to my house and get the rings
03:10 and bring them to me 'cause I was convinced
03:11 that it was gonna be a terrible night
03:12 if I didn't have my rings.
03:13 It was some weird thing.
03:15 [upbeat music]
03:17 I was actually TikTok influenced into buying this.
03:20 There's like a subculture on TikTok
03:22 that is just so obsessed with the Stanley Cup
03:24 and what you put in it and the flavored waters
03:26 and the soda concoctions.
03:28 And I was like, "I need this.
03:29 "This looks like it'll change my life."
03:31 And it completely did.
03:32 I've gotten actually so many of the people on my team
03:34 and so many of my friends on the Stanley grind with me.
03:38 I did live in Utah for a while.
03:40 And Utah is the land of specialty craft sodas.
03:44 This is what they put the sodas in.
03:46 So it's Diet Coke and Coconut Creamer
03:50 and Lemon Juice and all of this fun stuff
03:54 to doctor up your sodas.
03:56 I'm into that.
03:57 I'm very into that.
03:57 It's really fun.
03:58 [upbeat music]
04:01 The next item is Skinny Pop.
04:03 I consume so much Skinny Pop.
04:05 I inhale it like oxygen.
04:08 It is just my favorite snack.
04:10 There's one open bag of Skinny Pop
04:12 on my piano at all times, on my desk at all times,
04:16 and then in the kitchen at all times, open,
04:18 just ready for me to consume.
04:19 I truly, lots of days will eat this entire thing.
04:24 [bag crinkling]
04:26 Oh, so good.
04:27 I will bring this into the movie theater
04:29 'cause it's so much better
04:30 than the movie theater popcorn to me.
04:31 I'll just sneak it into my bag.
04:33 Oh, well, let's see what other flavors they have.
04:34 Petal Corn.
04:36 I've never tried that.
04:37 Popcorn mini cakes.
04:39 Wow.
04:40 There's a whole Skinny Pop cinematic universe I need to try.
04:42 [upbeat music]
04:45 This is my favorite perfume.
04:47 It's the Baccarat Rouge 540.
04:51 So good.
04:54 I have a candle of it too that I burn in my house.
04:56 I never was super into perfume before I smelled this one,
04:59 and I'm like, this, this is the one for me.
05:01 'Cause I don't love smelling candy
05:03 or flowers or something,
05:04 but this just smells sort of like you could
05:07 maybe possibly just naturally smell this way
05:10 if you're an angel or something.
05:12 It doesn't smell like any smell that I could place.
05:15 Lots of people say that if they'll smell this scent
05:17 and I'm like somewhere else, they'll think of me,
05:19 and that's a very high compliment.
05:21 [upbeat music]
05:24 This is my family.
05:25 And they are definitely one of my 10 essentials.
05:30 I need them for everything.
05:31 My mom and my dad.
05:32 I'm an only child.
05:33 And this is us at Rockefeller Center
05:35 during Christmas time last year.
05:37 Yeah, I love my family.
05:38 I wouldn't be anything without them.
05:41 I adore them.
05:42 Going to New York this time was a really fun time.
05:46 I really love traveling with my parents.
05:48 I think it's so fun to get to go new places with them.
05:51 I saw the Barbie movie the other day with my mom
05:53 and I was like, wow, it's a transcendent experience.
05:55 This is my favorite book.
05:59 I think it's the only book that I've read more than once.
06:02 It's like the creative person's Bible.
06:05 I've made so many of my friends read it.
06:08 I recommend it to everyone I know.
06:09 I just think it's so incredible.
06:11 It's all about creativity and discipline
06:14 and the anxieties that come along with creativity
06:17 and how to remedy those.
06:18 And it's just, it's amazing.
06:20 Elizabeth, if you're out there,
06:22 changed my life with this one.
06:23 It was so good.
06:24 I actually read this for the first time
06:26 while I was making Sour.
06:27 And I actually don't think that the album
06:31 would have turned out the way that it did
06:32 had I not read this book.
06:33 It was so instrumental in my creative journey.
06:37 I literally cannot leave the house without it.
06:41 Not being hyperbolic, I go everywhere with this.
06:44 I took Accutane for the first time this year.
06:47 I had bad teenager skin
06:50 and my lips were so dry all the time.
06:53 And now I carry this with me everywhere I go
06:55 because it's just so chapstick.
06:57 Put it on anything, put it on wounds.
06:59 The opportunities are endless with AquaPore.
07:02 I feel like all these items,
07:03 I'm just doing commercials for these brands.
07:05 These are guitar picks.
07:11 And I love playing guitar.
07:12 I love writing songs on guitar.
07:13 I'm slowly getting better.
07:15 Took some lessons this year.
07:16 I know a few songs.
07:19 I learned how to play guitar.
07:20 A lot of it was just by myself,
07:22 like learning songs I really love to play.
07:24 And when you're just learning how to play
07:26 like pop songs in your bedroom,
07:27 you just kind of do it intuitively
07:28 like with your fingertips.
07:31 But it always does sound better when you use a pick.
07:33 But sometimes it's just,
07:35 you just go back to what you did when you were 15.
07:38 My producer Dan is always trying to get me
07:39 to play with a pick 'cause he says it sounds better.
07:41 And I agree with him.
07:42 So I'm trying.
07:43 Keeping these with me.
07:45 I think I'm definitely better at piano.
07:47 I'm more comfortable playing it,
07:48 which is why I think sometimes it's nice
07:50 to go out of your comfort zone
07:51 and play something on an instrument
07:52 you're not so familiar with.
07:53 So I've been playing a lot of guitar lately.
07:56 I wrote "Love is Embarrassing" on guitar.
07:59 The song "Lacey" was written on guitar.
08:01 There are a lot of guitar-based songs on this album.
08:04 Nice, beautiful, finger-plucky guitar.
08:07 And there's also some really driving, hard-hitting,
08:10 more punky guitar.
08:11 So I gotta get my practice in before tour.
08:14 Thanks, GQ.
08:15 These were my 10 essentials.
08:17 I hope you enjoyed.
08:18 Check out my new album, "Guts,"
08:21 if you haven't already.
08:22 Bye. [laughs]
