00:16 prompting fears of a broader conflict.
00:20 In Egypt, a rogue police officer has shot dead two Israeli tourists and their Egyptian
00:25 guide in the port city of Alexandria.
00:30 Hundreds are feared to be trapped in the rubble of villages wiped out by a series of earthquakes
00:35 in Herat province in western Afghanistan.
00:40 Projections show Germany's center-right opposition parties winning two state elections and the
00:45 far-right AFD party also making gains.
00:50 Tanks were sent into southern Israel on Sunday, a day after Hamas' lightning assault, which
00:55 killed over 600 Israelis.
00:57 And Israeli soldiers are still battling Hamas fighters there.
01:01 In revenge, Israel is assaulting Gaza with missile strikes.
01:06 Dozens of them hit the town of Rafa overnight.
01:09 One of them hit three homes in Shaboura refugee camp, killing 19 members of the same family,
01:14 a surviving relative said.
01:17 In the besieged Israeli city of Sderot, this police station was destroyed and scores of
01:22 Israelis were gunned down by Hamas fighters before Israeli special forces were deployed.
01:28 Israel says it's now struck 426 targets in Gaza.
01:33 Some of them have been residential buildings that were flattened in massive explosions.
01:37 UNRWA, the United Nations Agency for Palestinians, said more than 20,000 of them have fled Gaza's
01:44 border region and headed further inside the territory to take refuge in UN schools.
01:50 There's also been violence in the occupied West Bank, although it's been limited.
01:54 In the city of Ramallah, Amr Aded, a 19-year-old Palestinian was shot dead in clashes with
02:00 Israeli troops and buried soon afterwards.
02:03 So far, at least 300 Palestinians have been killed in the war.
02:11 A day after the dramatic incursion by Hamas in southern Israel, fighting flared on its
02:16 northern border.
02:17 Lebanon's Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, said it fired large numbers of artillery shells
02:22 and guided missiles at Israeli positions.
02:26 Israel released footage it said showed armed drone strikes on Hezbollah targets.
02:31 The fighting flared in a disputed area along the borders of Israel, Lebanon and Syria near
02:37 the Golan Heights.
02:41 It's a hugely significant area in Israeli history, where a decisive battle was fought
02:46 in the Yom Kippur War almost exactly 50 years ago in 1973.
02:54 The fighting also prompted fears of a broader conflict.
03:00 On Sunday, an Israeli military commander reported the fighting was over and calm had been restored.
03:10 A rogue police officer has shot dead two Israelis and one Egyptian in the port city of Alexandria
03:16 on Egypt's Mediterranean coast.
03:19 Another Israeli was wounded before the policeman was apprehended by the security forces.
03:24 The shootings at a Roman tourist site come as conflict has again erupted between Israel
03:29 and Gaza.
03:31 Although Egypt made peace with Israel decades ago, anti-Israeli sentiment runs high amongst
03:37 Egyptians, particularly when there's a new outbreak of violence.
03:48 Israel's Iron Dome air defence is intercepting Hamas missiles over Tel Aviv on Saturday night.
03:55 As Western allies expressed unconditional support for Israel, the United States warned
04:00 any party hostile to Israel from exploiting the situation.
04:04 "In this moment of tragedy, I want to say to them and to the world and to terrorists
04:10 everywhere, the United States stands with Israel.
04:14 We will not ever fail to have your back."
04:19 Speaking in France, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen was one of
04:23 many European leaders condemning Hamas.
04:25 She described its attacks as terrorism in its most despicable form.
04:31 As an emergency cabinet meeting in Israel was told at least 250 Israelis had been killed
04:36 and 1,500 wounded, Western governments began efforts to find a diplomatic solution.
04:45 In the villages of Afghanistan's Zindajan and Gorian districts, there are believed to
04:49 be hundreds of survivors trapped and desperate to be freed from the rubble.
04:54 On Saturday, over 2,000 people lost their lives when a series of powerful earthquakes
04:59 hit the area about 40 kilometres from the city of Herat.
05:04 It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades.
05:07 "The earthquake hit the area about 40 kilometres from the city of Herat.
05:12 It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades."
05:18 "The earthquake hit the area about 40 kilometres from the city of Herat.
05:19 It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades."
05:20 "The earthquake hit the area about 40 kilometres from the city of Herat.
05:21 It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades."
05:22 "The earthquake hit the area about 40 kilometres from the city of Herat.
05:23 It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades."
05:24 "The earthquake hit the area about 40 kilometres from the city of Herat.
05:25 It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades."
05:26 "The earthquake hit the area about 40 kilometres from the city of Herat.
05:27 It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in two decades."
05:30 In the two affected districts in Herat province, thousands of people have been injured and
05:35 more than 1,300 houses have been partially or fully destroyed, the authorities say.
05:45 Germany's centre-right opposition has won two state elections in Bavaria and Hesse,
05:50 and the far-right Alternative for Germany party has also made gains.
05:54 It's a blow for Chancellor Olaf Scholz's left-of-centre coalition government halfway
05:59 through its term.
06:01 The election campaigns were dominated by discontent with the government in Berlin and by calls
06:06 for the number of migrants arriving in Germany to be reduced.
06:09 The interior minister, who leads the federal response on migration, also suffered a heavy
06:15 defeat in a bid to become governor of her home state.
06:20 Projections based on exit polls showed the CSU, which has led Bavaria since 1957, getting
06:27 nearly 37 per cent, little change from five years ago.
06:31 In Hesse, the CDU was seen winning about 34 per cent of the vote, making gains ahead of
06:37 its rivals.
06:39 The far-right Alternative for Germany party, which has risen to second place in national
06:43 polls, won't be a factor in determining the state's new governments, as other parties
06:48 have refused to work with it.
06:50 But the projections showed it winning 15 to 16 per cent of the vote in Bavaria and 16
06:56 to 17 per cent in Hesse, improving on double-digit showings when those two states last voted
07:02 in 2018.
07:04 Its increasing popularity will mean it will be harder for Germany to have governments
07:08 with stable majorities.
07:16 Spain officials joined a mass rally in Barcelona on Sunday to protest plans to grant jailed
07:21 Catalan separatists an amnesty.
07:25 It's being considered by acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to get their political support
07:30 for a new left-wing government that would be headed by him.
07:34 The separatists are serving sentences for sedition after organising an illegal independence
07:39 referendum in Catalonia.
07:42 Spain is in political limbo after it held an inconclusive election in July.
07:52 The first funerals for victims of Russia's missile strike on a cafe holding a wake for
07:56 a Ukrainian soldier.
07:58 51 people from Khoroza died, 12 more are unaccounted for.
08:03 "My house is 600 metres away.
08:10 I heard the explosion and came to the cafe.
08:13 The cafe collapsed like a cardboard box.
08:16 I started to help, to get the bodies out, to look for my relatives.
08:24 I found my dad, but my mum and grandma were never found."
08:34 On Saturday, the United Nations Human Rights Commission arrived in the village.
08:38 Commissioners interviewed residents and surveyed the site, gathering eyewitness testimony and
08:43 evidence.
08:51 The war in Ukraine has put Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhia, in the international
08:56 spotlight.
08:57 The plant is in Russian hands.
08:59 It's up to the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure it's safe and not used for
09:03 military purposes.
09:04 But Greenpeace questions the organisation's independence.
09:07 "The IAEA is under the Russian authority operating at a nuclear power plant.
09:14 And they need permission.
09:16 And if they would be critical, most likely they would be kicked out.
09:20 So the question, and that's a bit our conclusion, who is controlling who here?
09:25 Is it the IAEA controlling the Russian occupation?
09:31 Or is it the Russian occupants controlling the IAEA?"
09:35 "The assets of the IAEA being there, they are at the same time observers.
09:43 And they are people who can convey the findings to the outside world in real time.
09:50 They can interview the people, they can talk to the people, they can talk to the management,
09:55 they can talk to various places.
09:58 Yes, they have some restrictions in the movements, they cannot be everywhere.
10:03 But it's 10 times better than some satellite imagery which doesn't see what happens under
10:08 the roof."
10:09 At the root of the accusation is a report by McKenzie Intelligence.
10:13 Its experts can't see what's happening inside, but have gathered evidence Russia's militaries
10:18 using the plant as a shield.
10:20 "What we have seen is evidence of the Russians using the grounds to the south of the power
10:28 plant to launch artillery strikes against Ukrainian positions.
10:33 What that's basically doing is, because the plant is in that way, they're launching over
10:37 it and it prevents the Ukrainians from launching what we call counter-battery fires.
10:42 The heavy weapons, the artillery systems, we've seen or we've had reports that these
10:46 are being based not within the plant itself, but within the areas of habitation to the
10:52 south of the plant."
10:56 Despite its strategic importance and the fact it's already been bombed, experts say there's
11:00 no reason to fear a nuclear disaster.
11:03 "The reactor plant itself is very well protected.
11:10 It's practically impossible to penetrate.
11:14 If you try hard, you can do anything, but in principle, they have extremely good protection.
11:21 I would say that the most risky factor is the pool where the work is being done.
11:32 This pool is not protected, but in case of a shell or even several, yes, there will be
11:44 some contamination, but it will be on a very small territory."
11:47 (whooshing)
