Where does Brock Purdy rank among NFL QBs-
Transcript
00:00 What would you take over Brock
00:01 Purdy right now in this offense
00:03 Jay.
00:03 I mean that's a that's a good
00:05 question.
00:05 In this offense with the weapons
00:08 he has I would have to say zero.
00:11 And the reason being is if you
00:14 take one of these forty million
00:15 dollar guys someone else has got
00:17 to go right.
00:17 And you look at what they're
00:19 doing on this offense every game
00:22 and somebody different with the
00:23 big game with the big plays the
00:24 big stats.
00:25 But I mean they're running the
00:26 ball they're throwing the ball
00:28 utilizing the tight end the
00:30 usual utilizing the running
00:31 backs.
00:32 What can't they do whatever
00:34 you're going to give them or
00:35 whatever matchup they think they
00:36 have they're going to utilize it
00:38 and we talk about Brock Purdy
00:39 like you said he just makes
00:41 things look so easy back there
00:44 it's fluid the balls delivered
00:46 on time the decision seemed to
00:47 always be right.
00:48 And that's why I would say in
00:50 this offense the answer is zero.
00:52 He is the perfect fit for what
00:54 Kyle Shanahan is trying to do
00:56 and he is playing at such an
00:58 elite level.
00:58 It's fun to watch.
00:59 I wrote something down that
01:01 Chris Collinsworth said because
01:02 I want to talk to you about it
01:04 said about Brock Purdy.
01:04 This guy processes as well as
01:07 anyone in the NFL.
01:07 When he says that what does he
01:09 mean exactly.
01:10 So when Collinsworth says that
01:12 which last week I had a bit of a
01:14 debate you know I wasn't
01:15 thrilled with a couple of
01:16 comments Collinsworth made.
01:16 But I think he's right on the
01:18 money here.
01:18 If you watch a lot of these
01:20 plays I mean the early one here
01:23 is an extended play.
01:23 And when he starts at that news
01:26 game it's even more dynamic.
01:28 A lot of these other throws you
01:29 see guys are hit right in stride
01:31 and even the subtle movements in
01:33 the pocket with his eyes with
01:35 his hips you know he's going
01:37 through his progressions or he's
01:38 manipulating defensive players
01:41 or defensive backs.
01:41 And there was a few times that
01:43 a you know I look I remember one
01:45 play Christian McCaffrey cut a
01:46 little check down and it was one
01:47 of those things where it wasn't
01:49 an electric play was an
01:50 explosive.
01:50 But you see Purdy come back.
01:52 He's trying to let something
01:54 unfold down the field.
01:55 He realizes the clock is ticking.
01:57 He doesn't have it.
01:58 He doesn't force anything.
01:59 Doesn't throw up a prayer.
02:01 Boom the hips turn right paints
02:04 his check down.
02:04 It was exactly where he's going
02:05 to be.
02:05 Next thing you know it's a great
02:08 football play and it picks up
02:09 seven yards.
02:10 Little plays like that go a long
02:13 way when you consistently do
02:14 them.
02:15 We're going to get to your
02:16 thoughts on George Kittle in a
02:18 second because I know you got
02:18 him.
02:19 But first George Kittle standing
02:20 by with Brock Purdy and Melissa
02:22 Stark.
02:23 He's so classic and it looks
02:25 like he's in the Allman
02:26 brothers.
02:27 He's hanging out.
02:28 He's just having fun.
02:29 You know he's just having fun.
02:30 He's probably seen all the
02:32 attention Travis Kelsey is
02:33 getting and he's like hey come
02:35 on man.
02:35 I mean he's dominant and I think
02:38 he's the most complete tight end
02:40 in the NFL.
02:40 Right.
02:40 It's electric.
02:41 And like you said he's having
02:43 fun.
02:43 But to me his run game in his
02:46 blocking is what are most
02:48 impressive.
02:49 Obviously at the three
02:51 touchdowns.
02:51 But if you look at how they use
02:52 in the run game here is in a
02:54 combination block with the on a
02:55 linebacker you expect him to win
02:57 because here he's going to step
02:59 outside on Lawrence and you're
03:00 going to see you check come on
03:01 the inside.
03:01 That's a plan play climbs up to
03:04 the backers a great job.
03:05 Another time we're now mono
03:07 mono with Parsons and you see
03:09 Parsons try to extend his arms
03:11 there.
03:11 Most tight ends get condensed
03:12 into the hole and the play goes
03:14 nowhere.
03:14 Not Kittle.
03:14 And again backside we get a nice
03:16 chip climbs up to the backer and
03:19 then on the final side you see
03:20 again this technique where he's
03:22 going to chip Parsons on the way
03:24 up to absolutely bullying a
03:25 linebacker out of the way.
03:26 You check picks up Parsons the
03:29 way this guy is utilized in the
03:31 past in the run game and just
03:34 the variety of different blocks.
03:35 A lot of these tight ends will
03:36 be OK.
03:37 We can count this guy to hold
03:39 you know backside blocks but
03:40 we'll never have him frontside.
03:41 Or if we can get the matchup on
03:43 a linebacker we're good.
03:44 But if not you know we've got to
03:46 scheme something else out here.
03:48 Those are just a few clips where
03:50 you watch him double team with a
03:51 tackle twice double team on
03:53 their best defensive players with
03:55 a fullback a matchup that most
03:57 teams wouldn't love.
03:57 You know Micah Parsons versus a
03:59 tight end.
03:59 Yeah.
04:00 And they're taking that and he's
04:02 able to climb and be athletic
04:04 enough to get to the second
04:05 level on quicker DB linebacker
04:08 style guys and drive them out of
04:10 the box.
04:10 These are small things that when
04:12 you turn on the game film on
04:14 Monday and you're like you know
04:15 why are we having so much
04:17 success.
04:17 They don't show up on the stat
04:19 sheet but that is the reason
04:21 this offense goes as well as it
04:23 does.
04:24 That's the style and pairs so
04:25 well with use check too.
04:26 And then for the Cowboys I mean
04:28 this was such a hyped up
04:29 matchup.
04:30 Cowboys came in obviously
04:32 thinking they could win this
04:33 thing and just were not even in
04:34 the same arena with this
04:37 Niners team.
04:37 Did it confirm that they are the
04:39 team you thought they were.
04:39 Yeah.
04:40 What was disappointing and we
04:42 talked with this all week Jay
04:43 was when you play a team as
04:45 great as the Niners and the
04:47 Cowboys are a good team but
04:48 they're not on paper that level
04:50 the Niners are at your margin
04:52 of error becomes very small.
04:53 You have to go out and play not
04:56 a perfect game but near to it.
04:58 And we talked with the Cowboys
05:00 creating turnovers and as you
05:02 see here it was the polar
05:04 opposite.
05:04 I mean we're very very loose with
05:07 the ball.
05:08 There are some forced throws
05:10 where we're taking shots
05:11 downfield.
05:11 And at some points yes the game
05:13 was starting to get out of hand
05:15 but all game it was just tough
05:17 for them to move the ball and
05:20 you're turning the ball over.
05:20 And the last thing I'll say
05:21 that was disappointing is you
05:24 look at the way these two teams
05:25 are built and to me you've got
05:28 as we've talked about a
05:29 quarterback who is on a rookie
05:30 contract on the Niners and a
05:32 bunch of playmakers but they all
05:34 play within a system where on
05:36 the other side of the ball
05:37 you've got these high named guys
05:39 making big money.
05:40 And if you if you're going to go
05:42 that route in big time games
05:44 your big time players need to
05:46 make big time plays.
05:46 Yeah.
05:47 And not one of their big time
05:49 players looked good tonight.
05:51 I think it starts with Dak who
05:52 you know was below average.
05:54 Pollard was really you know shut
05:57 down in the run game.
05:57 I think he had one late when
05:59 they were down a bunch and
06:00 Seedy Lamb was almost
06:01 non-existent.
06:02 And if you're a Cowboys fan like
06:04 those are your big three.
06:04 Yeah.
06:05 You want to see them ball out on
06:08 Sunday night football against
06:10 the best in the league.
06:10 Not all three of them pretty
06:12 much get shut down.
06:12 Yeah it didn't happen.
06:14 We talked about the Bills last
06:16 week.
06:16 You were so impressed with them
06:17 last week.
06:18 My question here we go.
06:20 I want to ask you about this.
06:21 What what do you make of that
06:24 Bill's loss.
06:24 I think a lot of people are
06:26 obviously going to give them a
06:28 bit of a mulligan on this one
06:29 just considering the travel the
06:31 fact that the Jags were there
06:32 all week.
06:32 They were there last week.
06:33 What do you think.
06:33 So first and foremost I thought
06:37 it was outrageously unfair to
06:39 the Bills.
06:40 Not only did they get there
06:42 late but that being said the
06:44 fact that Jacksonville was able
06:46 to play there last week and you
06:49 could play a back to back week
06:50 in London I thought was
06:52 unbelievably unfair.
06:53 But that being said you sit
06:56 here and and if I'm the Bills
06:58 there's adversity.
06:59 Yes but I'm the best team in
07:02 this league.
07:02 That's how I'm thinking if I'm
07:04 that Bill's locker room and if
07:06 I'm one of these leaders I'm
07:07 saying to myself OK odds are
07:09 stacked against us.
07:10 How are we going to win this
07:11 game.
07:11 And the way to do that is to
07:13 come out and play fundamentally
07:15 sound football.
07:16 Establish the run game early.
07:18 Get everything third and
07:19 manageable convert on third
07:21 downs and stop the Jags on
07:24 third down.
07:24 Yeah.
07:25 Instead you come out wildly
07:26 flat you drop a ball on the
07:29 first drive.
07:29 I believe they went three and
07:30 out three and out and one for
07:32 sound three and out.
07:33 Yeah they were.
07:34 I want to say five of twelve on
07:37 third down conversions.
07:37 They gave up ten of eighteen on
07:40 third down stops in running the
07:42 ball.
07:42 They had twenty nine total
07:44 yards.
07:45 Cook who's their number one back
07:47 and with negative for rush
07:50 yards and of the twenty nine
07:52 around half of it was Josh Allen
07:54 scrambles.
07:54 So what pains me about the
07:58 Bills is they have so much
07:59 talent.
07:59 Yeah.
08:00 And obviously the injury
08:02 situation was tough.
08:02 And like I said stacked against
08:05 them.
08:05 But you'd like to see the
08:06 maturity of this team be like
08:07 hey we understand there's some
08:09 adversity here our backs are
08:10 against the wall but we can
08:12 still handle business by
08:14 playing well.
08:14 And as much as I'd love to sit
08:17 here and say the Jacksonville
08:18 Jaguars came out here and look
08:20 dominant and deserve this win
08:22 and I'm not trying to take
08:22 anything away from Jacksonville
08:24 but this was Buffalo's game to
08:26 lose and Buffalo lost.
08:27 Yeah.
08:27 Jacksonville squeaked it out
08:29 squeaked it out.
08:29 They have no business beating
08:31 this Bill's team.
08:32 And now you're sitting here as a
08:34 Bills fan or someone watching
08:36 football and myself included.
08:37 And you watch them play Miami
08:40 last week and you're thinking
08:41 this team's incredible.
08:41 Yeah.
08:42 But the reality of the situation
08:44 is there are three and two with
08:46 losses to the Jets into
08:48 Jacksonville and wins against
08:50 the Raiders the commanders and
08:53 Miami.
08:54 So who is this team on paper.
08:57 They are tremendous.
08:58 They have a ton of talent.
08:59 Josh Allen is that guy.
09:01 Stefan Diggs is that guy.
09:02 But when they come out and have
09:04 performances like today Jay it's
09:06 very hard for me to sit here
09:07 and say this team is ready to
09:09 make a Super Bowl run and be
09:11 there in January or potentially
09:13 in February.
09:13 Well what about the Bengals like
09:16 I'm not to say that they're a
09:16 Super Bowl contender based on
09:18 the way their season has
09:18 started but they actually turn
09:20 their season around on Sunday.
09:21 I think because of what
09:23 happened in the Pittsburgh
09:25 Ravens game that helps them out
09:27 quite a bit.
09:27 What I think the Bengals offense
09:30 is going to come down to is can
09:32 they protect Joe Burrow.
09:33 There's this big narrative today
09:35 or that Jamar Chase is back and
09:38 I'm asking where he ever
09:40 actually went because two weeks
09:41 ago he had twelve catches for
09:43 one hundred and forty one yards.
09:45 Last week he had seven for
09:46 seventy three.
09:47 Obviously today he had a
09:49 historic game 15 catches and
09:51 three touchdowns.
09:51 But if you watch these plays
09:54 Joe's back there pitching a
09:55 tent OK which is great if you're
09:57 a Bengals fan.
09:58 But the reality was that was not
10:01 the situation when they played
10:02 the Titans last week.
10:03 Yeah.
10:03 So as much as we want to say OK
10:06 is Jamar Chase and Joe Burrow
10:08 back.
10:08 I'm not sure they haven't been
10:11 back for three or four weeks
10:12 now.
10:12 The difference was Joe Burrow
10:14 wasn't getting absolutely
10:15 tattooed in the chest.
10:16 Every other play today he was
10:18 able to sit back there and
10:20 deliver the ball was with some
10:21 ease.
10:21 This guy will be back in a
10:24 moment to talk about the rest of
10:25 the NFL Sunday.
10:27 That had to feel good.
10:28 Oh man he must be so happy.
10:31 OK we're going to get to that.
10:32 We got to talk about Bill
10:34 Belichick.
10:34 What since he just said starting
10:37 over means starting over.
10:38 What do you interpret that to
10:40 me.
10:40 So I think there's a lot of ways
10:43 you can interpret it Jay.
10:43 I mean to me when you show up in
10:46 offseason so not training camp
10:48 you really start from the basics
10:50 every year.
10:50 You're talking about putting in
10:51 quick game plays plays you put
10:53 in every year and it is you know
10:55 tedious it's tiresome it's
10:57 boring but it kind of lays the
10:59 foundation for your season.
11:00 And clearly whatever they had
11:02 going in New England did not
11:04 work and is not clicking.
11:05 I mean you're watching Matt
11:07 Jones overthrow balls where he
11:09 has time.
11:09 He has very little feel in the
11:11 pocket right now.
11:12 You saw that by the earlier pick
11:14 that he gets hit and throws it
11:16 pick six the pitch fumble there
11:19 we just watched.
11:19 And even this ball you know it
11:22 just seems like it's such a
11:23 tough play when it's not.
11:25 Yeah.
11:26 I think the receiver there is
11:28 hoping for a little more zip on
11:29 the ball.
11:29 You can see him reaching like
11:30 kind of waiting on it.
11:30 Yeah.
11:31 He's got to make the play that
11:32 was on a Mac.
11:33 But what is so shocking and I
11:36 think Bill is alluding to is
11:38 that he is a guy that for what
11:41 seems like since the dawn of
11:42 time.
11:42 Has preached fundamentals.
11:44 Yeah.
11:45 Boring football.
11:46 We're going to be technically
11:47 sound.
11:47 We're not going to turn the ball
11:49 over.
11:49 We're going to make good
11:50 decisions.
11:50 And a big quote that Bill has
11:53 really coined that has trickled
11:54 through this league is that most
11:56 games in the NFL aren't actually
11:58 one.
11:58 They're lost.
11:59 And that was his big thing.
12:01 And you know when Tom was there
12:03 like hey we're going to let
12:04 other teams beat themselves.
12:05 We're going to play this sound.
12:07 Let's call it boring football.
12:10 Somehow they've become in the
12:12 matter of two years the worst
12:16 team when it comes to turning
12:18 the ball over and beating
12:19 themselves.
12:19 So I think that's what he means
12:21 by we've got to start over
12:22 because what his program with
12:24 that organization everything
12:26 that Bill Belichick stands for
12:28 and I'm not even I'm not
12:29 exaggerating the product they're
12:32 putting on the field is the
12:33 polar opposite right now.
12:34 And I know Bill has his funny
12:36 interviews but I can guarantee
12:38 you he is enraged.
12:40 Off camera he was so mad right
12:42 there.
12:42 Yeah.
12:43 And when you show up to Monday
12:45 work every single person in that
12:47 building including people that
12:49 have nothing to do with the
12:50 football side are very anxious
12:52 when they see Bill Belichick as
12:54 he is not a happy man.
12:54 And Sean Payton also not a happy
12:58 man.
12:58 His Broncos are one in four
13:00 after he criticizes Hackett in
13:01 the preseason.
13:01 OK Jay hear me out on this.
13:03 I mean and we're going to get
13:05 into some numbers here.
13:05 Sure.
13:06 But you're Nathaniel Hackett.
13:08 We're going to or excuse me
13:10 Sean Payton.
13:10 We get this job and we go after
13:13 Nathaniel Hackett for no real
13:15 reason.
13:15 You didn't have to do it.
13:16 And then all of a sudden you get
13:19 to this point where you're just
13:21 so bad as a team and as an
13:23 offense.
13:24 What we're watching here that
13:25 last play in this play we're
13:27 watching right here were two of
13:29 the top three most explosive
13:31 past plays that the Denver
13:33 Broncos had today.
13:34 They were simply chip you know
13:37 bat routes to the back.
13:39 Yeah.
13:39 And the next thing I'll say is
13:42 if you're going to run your
13:43 mouth and kind of come in like
13:44 you're this guru and you're
13:45 going to fix everything in this
13:47 league at halftime coaches are
13:50 going crazy in the room.
13:50 They're running around the
13:52 players usually you know we get
13:53 retape maybe you tape your
13:55 ankle get a new pair of gloves
13:56 whatever you're drinking a
13:57 Gatorade.
13:57 The coaches are running around
13:59 like crazy because they have
14:00 these meetings that are very
14:01 quick and here are the
14:02 adjustments.
14:03 Here's what the Booth tell us we
14:05 can see this is what we're
14:05 really going to focus on coming
14:07 into the second half.
14:07 Right.
14:09 I'm going to get my sticky note
14:10 out here is we've been waiting.
14:11 These were the first five drives
14:14 for the Denver Broncos starting
14:15 in the second half.
14:16 Three plays for four yards three
14:19 plays for negative four yards
14:21 three plays for negative six
14:23 yards two plays for negative 10
14:25 yards and a fumble and then
14:27 three plays for negative two
14:29 yards.
14:30 You're going to run your mouth
14:32 about Nathaniel Hackett and this
14:34 is the product you're putting on
14:36 the table after you and your
14:37 staff come in and supposedly are
14:39 making adjustments you can come
14:40 out hot in the second half.
