00:00 Once thought to be the greatest Green Lantern of all time, Sinestro became one of the most feared villains in the universe
00:06 and a constant thorn in the side of Hal Jordan, John Stewart and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps.
00:12 Originally the only wielder of the Yellow Lantern Ring, Sinestro created his own corps based on the concept of fear, the Yellow Lantern Corps.
00:21 So with this in mind, I'm Dan from WhatCulture and here are 10 things every DC Comics fan forgets about Sinestro.
00:29 Number 10. The Sinestro Corps has their own oath.
00:34 The oath has become one of the most recognizable aspects of the Lanterns.
00:38 Recitation of the oath is generally done during the charging of the rings, which happens once every 24 hours for most ring bearers.
00:46 Each oath is specific to the color on the emotional spectrum that recites it.
00:51 Hal Jordan began to use the familiar Green Lantern oath when charging his ring and eventually found that all Lanterns used a similar one,
00:59 although there were changes based on culture, sensory issues and more.
01:04 It was discovered with the emotional spectrum that each corps had an oath.
01:08 The oath for the Sinestro Corps is especially sinister because it talks of great fear and extols Sinestro's might specifically.
01:16 Number 9. Guy Gardner used Sinestro's ring for a time.
01:20 At the end of the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Sinestro was executed by the Guardians and his spirit was held within the central power battery.
01:29 John Stewart charged his ring directly from the battery and a malfunction allowed Sinestro to free himself and briefly invade Stewart's mind.
01:37 After being ejected, Sinestro's spirit wandered Oa aimlessly for a time.
01:42 Former Green Lantern Guy Gardner was on Oa to steal Sinestro's ring from the Crypt of the Green Lanterns
01:49 and Sinestro rose up to battle Gardner, but Guy won and got away with the ring.
01:54 The Guardians eventually recaptured Sinestro's spirit and returned it to the battery.
01:59 Guy had a bit of trouble with the yellow ring however.
02:01 He did not read or speak Quadian, so he didn't understand what the ring was saying to him.
02:06 They instead developed an instinctual understanding of each other.
02:10 Also, the ring had no battery to charge it, but instead got its charge from battling a Green Lantern ring.
02:16 This wasn't information Gardner had at first, and then a Parallax-possessed Hal Jordan came and took Gardner's ring to add it to his collection.
02:25 Number 8. Skill and Will
02:28 Sinestro had a number of skills that have nothing to do with his Yellow Lantern ring.
02:32 In addition to his genius intellect, Sinestro was said to be specifically attuned to what those around him feared.
02:39 Even without employing any ring power to augment the skill, Sinestro could centre on a person's fear and use it to manipulate and intimidate them.
02:47 Sinestro had superior leadership skills and was a master tactician, and an unparalleled hand-to-hand combatant.
02:55 He had regularly taken on a number of Lanterns at once by himself,
02:59 and in a group of people where willpower was a benchmark of greatness,
03:02 Sinestro was considered to possess the most indomitable will of any being in all of the universe.
03:08 This determination was made by the Guardian's living embodiment of willpower, Ion.
03:13 Despite his fall from grace, there was probably a reason why Sinestro was once considered the greatest Green Lantern of all time.
03:20 Number 7. He's a Team Player
03:23 In addition to his own Sinestro Corps and his former affiliation with the Green Lantern Corps,
03:28 Sinestro was a member of a number of different supervillain teams made mostly of Earth-based villains,
03:34 whose involvement brought him in direct confrontation with the Justice League.
03:38 Sinestro has been a member of the Secret Society of Supervillains, the Injustice League,
03:42 and most recently Sinestro joined nearly every costumed villain currently active in the Society,
03:48 a group created by Alexander Luthor of Earth-3, who was posing as Earth-1's Lex Luthor.
03:54 The Society was created to work together, coordinate, and make the heroes pay
03:59 for the perceived mind wipes of villains by the Justice League.
04:03 Number 6. Sinestro's Ring Comes From Another Dimension
04:07 To punish Sinestro for his crimes on Karuga,
04:10 the Guardians banished him to the planet Kord in the Anti-Mata universe.
04:14 There, he met the Weaponers, who were a group of engineers, designers, and weapons makers in the community.
04:20 Sinestro told them about the Green Lantern rings and their necessary yellow impurity.
04:24 The Weaponers then created the Yellow Ring and the power battery to charge it.
04:28 The Yellow Rings created yellow energy constructs, usually based on some aspect of the emotion of fear.
04:35 The rings also created energy blasts with varying degrees of force.
04:39 The stronger the will of the user, the greater the blast.
04:42 Additionally, the ring created force fields and bubbles that protect the user from harm
04:46 and allow them to fly in space without the benefit of a ship.
04:50 The ring has also created wormholes, spatial warps, and has engaged in limited time travel.
04:56 Number 5. The New 52
04:58 After Flashpoint, when the DC Universe found itself rebooted in The New 52,
05:03 Sinestro found himself with the Green Lantern ring once again.
05:06 The Guardians saw this as an opportunity for Sinestro to redeem himself,
05:10 and with the help of Hal Jordan, he disassembled his own Sinestro core.
05:14 At one point, the Indigo Tribe forced an Indigo ring on Sinestro,
05:18 but Jordan was able to get them to free him into his custody.
05:22 Then, the Guardians turned and instructed the Black Hand to kill Jordan and Sinestro.
05:27 As they felt their energy waning, they fused their rings together and sent it off for help.
05:32 The pair was banished to the Dead Zone.
05:34 There, they encountered the deceased Green Lantern,
05:36 Tomar Ray, who asked them to stop Volthoom, the first Lantern.
05:41 Sinestro was able to escape, acquire a Green Lantern ring,
05:44 and return to Karugo to prepare to battle Volthoom.
05:47 The entity consumes the hopes and fears of the people and destroys the entire planet.
05:52 Sinestro is discovered in the rubble by Star Sapphire and the White Lantern, Kyle Rayner.
05:57 However, Rayner was unable to resurrect the planet with his power,
06:00 and Sinestro reclaims his Yellow Ring and goes off to gain his revenge.
06:04 The Blackest Night
06:06 An alliance between the old Green Lantern villain, Black Hand, and the entity Necron
06:11 saw the dead rise as members of the Black Lantern core,
06:14 an event that Sinestro's mentor, Abin Sur, had long feared.
06:18 Necron summoned the embodiment of the life force into the universe, called the Entity.
06:23 Sinestro entered the Entity and emerged as a being of white energy,
06:27 who was in harmony with every being in the universe.
06:30 During the battle with Necron, Sinestro was killed, but he was healed by the Entity.
06:35 Sinestro could then become the true guardian of the universe,
06:38 but his own egotistical nature made him unable to retain the White Lantern energy.
06:43 He reclaimed the Yellow Energy, and the Lanterns worked together to separate
06:47 Necron from the energy that powers the Black Lantern, and his armies expired again.
06:51 The Sinestro Core
06:54 The return of Hal Jordan and the reconstruction of the Green Lantern core
06:58 prompted Sinestro to create a core of his own.
07:00 Returning to the antimatter world of Quard, Sinestro created more Yellow Rings and sent
07:06 them out in search of the most savage beings who could instill great fear in others.
07:11 Sinestro directed his core to fight on many fronts,
07:14 and then they began an assault on the Green Lantern's home planet of Oa.
07:18 To stop the Sinestro Core, the Guardians authorized the Green Lantern core to use deadly force,
07:23 and Sinestro claimed that this had been his goal all along.
07:26 Even when he was defeated, he claimed victory because he said that the now
07:31 deadly Green Lantern core would now spread fear throughout the galaxy.
07:34 The Greatest Green Lantern of All Time
07:38 Long before Hal Jordan ever slipped on a Green Lantern ring,
07:41 Sinestro was considered to be the greatest Green Lantern of them all.
07:45 Sinestro was chosen for his honor and fearlessness.
07:48 However, they were unaware that he took the ring from his predecessor and allowed him to die.
07:53 The Guardians were also supremely impressed that Sector 1417,
07:57 the sector Sinestro patrolled as a Green Lantern, was virtually devoid of crime.
08:02 Again, the Guardians were oblivious to the dictatorial hold he had on his home world,
08:07 and his extreme methods of dealing with those who opposed him.
08:10 Sinestro hid his true side well from them.
08:13 After Abin Sur died and passed his ring on to Hal Jordan,
08:17 Ganthit assigned Sinestro to mentor him in the use of the ring,
08:20 and they became friends until Sinestro's true nature and criminal actions became evident,
08:26 and Jordan had to stop his new friend, gaining a deadly enemy in the process.
08:30 He is the Master of Fear
08:33 Each Lantern core embraced a one-word aspect on the emotional spectrum.
08:37 The Blue Lanterns embrace hope, the Green Lanterns embrace will,
08:40 and the Yellow Lanterns embrace the concept of fear.
08:44 Sinestro was the true master of the concept, leading every member of his core
08:48 to instill great fear in every corner of the universe.
08:52 Sinestro embraced the teachings of Parallax, who he spent a great deal of time with
08:56 while they were imprisoned together in the Central Power Battery on Oa.
09:00 Sinestro aided Parallax in taking over Hal Jordan,
09:03 and in trying to destroy Kyle Rayner's will when he was on Ion to allow Parallax to possess him.
09:09 When Parallax merged with Sinestro,
09:11 he put him on the physical strength level of Superman,
09:14 and his energy constructs were much stronger.
09:17 Sinestro had the innate ability to determine and understand the fears of others.
09:21 He was also able to communicate these fears to his core members telepathically.
09:26 Sinestro also had the ability to coerce or intimidate others through fear without the use of his ring.
09:32 This made him a particularly effective, if not always lawful, investigator.
09:36 And that's our list.
