00:00 I'm in the North car park at Petworth Park and I'm just about to start a walk around
00:04 the deer park that should be about three miles.
00:07 There's going to be a circular walk back here to the car park.
00:11 The trees here are just starting to change colour for the autumn and they're soon going
00:15 to look absolutely beautiful.
00:17 I've literally just left the car park and walked diagonally through the trees to follow
00:23 a grassy path and it's going to be heading uphill here.
00:27 We're just going to follow this grassy path through the trees.
00:32 Here I'm taking the right hand path of these two grass paths you can see ahead of us.
00:38 The views from here as you look back are just wonderful.
00:42 When you get to the cottage you take a left and start following the wide path still going
00:47 uphill.
00:49 Quite soon you're going to turn off the main wide track and go up this grassy path here
00:54 so you get up to the top of the hill.
00:59 It's a bit of a steep climb actually but it's worth it because these views are lovely.
01:06 This is very exciting.
01:31 Way out there in the distance on the hill I can see one of the deer.
01:35 It's a bit of a grey murky day today but it is still seriously fabulous.
01:44 There's a deer in the trees there but I'm keeping well away to just give it space.
01:49 I think it'll be quite happy when I move on in a minute.
01:52 So this is it.
01:53 The highest point of the park.
01:59 I think if you come here in a week or two you're going to get much more colour than
02:10 I'm getting today.
02:12 But let's face it, there's some fabulous trees here.
02:19 Up the other side of the trees we're just continuing to follow the grassy path with
02:23 the wall on our right.
02:27 As we come down here we've arrived at this crossroads of grassy paths.
02:32 Now here I am turning left.
02:36 The path is gently curving downhill through the trees and you follow it down just to the
02:41 right continuing downhill through the trees.
02:45 Again we've got a beautiful view as we head downhill.
02:57 We've reached the stone road.
03:00 Now you can see the lower pond in the distance and a grassy path leading towards it.
03:05 So we're going to head down there.
03:07 Now at the moment I can see there's quite a few deer out there so I'm just going to
03:11 be careful and be kind to them.
03:19 Before you get to the pond you need to turn off to the right and you'll see trees on
03:32 a hill ahead of you.
03:33 I found a fallen tree to sit on and have my lunch and over there behind me in the trees
03:40 there's some deer.
03:41 So it's lovely sitting here just watching them.
03:46 At this point there's a fork in the path and I'm going to take the left path heading up
03:51 to Arbour Hill.
03:54 Again it's very steep but gosh is it worth it.
04:00 You know I never knew that deer sound like pigs.
04:03 They've been very noisy today.
04:10 As you come up and over the hill you'll see a whole bank of trees in the distance.
04:15 Now behind that is the upper lake and although you can't really see it you can certainly
04:21 hear the ducks and geese all on there.
04:27 Keep following the path round with that bank of trees to your right.
04:31 Soon spot on your right this path down towards the trees.
04:35 Now if we head down there we're going to get to the lake and work our way round to the
04:38 boathouse.
04:39 We're just going to turn left and walk round this side of the fence because it isn't going
04:44 to be long before we get to the lake.
04:46 Well here's all the geese we heard.
04:51 If you just pop into the boathouse you'll see there's these lovely stone benches where
04:56 you can sit and watch the world go by.
05:12 This is also our first view of Petworth House.
05:14 You can just see the corner of it over there behind the hill.
05:20 Once you leave the boathouse carry on round the lake until you see a crossroads of grass
05:24 paths.
05:25 Turn left there.
05:28 Then quite quickly at this junction you want to take that grass path on the right which
05:33 is coming up to another junction with a network of paths.
05:37 We're just going to carry straight across.
05:41 We're back up that hill and now we're heading down going towards the lower pond.
05:46 That's where we're going.
05:47 Look out for this path on the right which takes you down to the ponds.
05:52 We'll follow on that one.
05:53 If you make your way round the back of the pond and then you just follow the path all
05:59 the way back to the car park.
06:02 I think it's fair to say there's been just a hint of what's to come for the autumn here
06:07 today.
06:08 But really any time of the year it's wonderful to walk out here and look at the lovely trees.
06:14 Some really really old trees and beautiful trees.
06:17 It's always a joy.
