Nissan Brain to Performance

  • last year
Nissan reveals the results of its innovative and ground-breaking Brain to Performance program. The findings of this initiative, which studies driver brain function and anatomy, show how brain training protocols can successfully improve the cognitive functions of Nissan Formula E Team drivers.

Furthermore, the data indicates that racing drivers who participated in the Nissan Brain to Performance training experienced enhancements in complex decision-making, stress and fatigue resilience, and quicker reaction times. These improvements can help reduce on-track errors and maximize drivers' pace and consistency.

Continual training could enable the Nissan Formula E Team drivers to reach the maximum potential of their brains in terms of clarity, which relates to their ability to perform in high-pressure environments, and speed, measuring how quickly they can process information.

Following these successful findings, Nissan Formula E Team plans to fully integrate these brain training protocols into its drivers' overall training programs from Season 10. The knowledge gained from both the research and application stages, with further adaptations, is expected to be applicable to the wider NISMO family beyond the FIA Formula E World Championship, including drivers in the Japanese Super GT series. Furthermore, this program highly accelerated the research towards developing a driving skill improvement system, accessible to all the drivers.

00:03 With this specific project, we are
00:15 looking at how we can improve the brain activity per se
00:19 in order to improve the skills of our drivers.
00:23 At the beginning of this project,
00:25 we ran extensive research with Essex University in UK
00:29 and with BrainCredible in Switzerland
00:31 in order to understand the differences between very good
00:34 drivers' brains and an average driver's brain.
00:38 We have developed two different protocols
00:40 to actually help the drivers to put themselves
00:43 in a better place and to be more focused
00:46 and to have a faster reaction.
00:49 The device that we have designed together with Wave Neuro
00:52 has two types of effect on the brain.
00:55 It helps accelerate the overall activity of the brain,
00:58 and it also helps with the data transfer
01:01 from different parts of the brain.
01:03 So we had one of our drivers use this CMS device,
01:07 and we could measure his basic brain activity
01:11 and the characteristics of his brain
01:13 before usage and at the end of the training program.
01:17 I've seen some improvements on my concentration, mainly.
01:21 So I feel like this is an area of motorsport
01:24 and an area of our training that needs to be worked on.
01:27 And I think it's something that we will see more people
01:30 and more drivers work on towards the future.
01:34 For Season 10, we are trying to understand
01:36 how we can better integrate this training program
01:39 into the daily life of our new drivers.
01:43 I have started an internal research program
01:45 that is preparing this technology to be used
01:48 in dealerships in order to give access
01:51 to this highly accelerated training program
01:53 to any of our customers.
