The New Kia EV4 Concept Is the Electric Stinger Sequel We Deserve.
It's also heading into production, so sedans may not be dead in the electric future.
There's activity in the world of SUVs, crossovers and pickup trucks these days. Sedans just live in it. Of course, the classic four-box (or even five-door hatchback) is represented in the electric world by models such as the Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 6, BMW i4 and, of course, the Tesla Model 3 and Model S. New EVs coming to market lately have overwhelmingly been SUVs and even trucks. That's why the Kia EV4 Concept is so refreshing. This proves that not every automaker is ready to give up on sedans just yet, and Kia hopes it can even win the support of some new fans.
Unveiled at Kia's EV Day event in Seoul this week, the EV4 Concept is one of two new vehicles debuted by the Korean automaker; the other was the EV3 Concept.
In terms of design, the EV4 Concept is largely similar to the EV6 crossover - not exactly a bad thing - just lower and slightly smaller. But it's not that low. The EV4 has an almost crossover-like ride height. Consider something similar to the Toyota Crown hybrid or even the aforementioned Polestar 2. Kia is also quick to evoke its now-discontinued performance sedan, the Stinger, and it's nice to know that car will undergo some sort of spiritual transformation. And yes, he likes a different animal than his cousin, the Ioniq 6 ; slightly longer and wider overall.
The front of the EV4 Concept bears a strong resemblance to the EV9 and EV5: long, narrow, LED-dominant headlights and a "tiger" grille running along the bottom. The hood has a low slope (but offers an overhang, Kia says), while the rear tapers to create a true hatchback, much like the Stinger. After all, the silhouette certainly evokes the shape of the EV6, but in sporty sedan form.
