00:00 Well hello, hello, hello to everybody out there in video land.
00:11 Ravenloft Strad's position continues.
00:19 And in this episode we get to meet Strad himself.
00:23 The villain invites us to dinner.
00:28 Shall we survive?
00:31 And when might we collect the old paladin's icon of holiness?
00:41 Let's begin.

01:38 And that's what happens when you die.
01:39 Let me go ahead and just load my save.

02:27 This place sticks out like a gold ring in a pig's nose.
02:31 What gives such a man the right to flaunt finery in a poor town?
02:35 He's no doubt stolen the townsfolk blind by inflating their taxes.
02:38 You'd think the lord of this place would be outraged.

06:28 It would seem we found the home of a man who can afford to be unstingingly generous to himself.
06:35 This demonstration convinces me of one thing.
06:38 When I'm ready to change careers to the burgomaster I shall become.
06:42 [Music]
07:11 [Music]
07:15 This is Count Strad's writ.
07:26 By the authority of our lord Strad von Zarovich,
07:29 the following rumors are to be stamped out in the minds of the burgomasters,
07:33 boyars, and peasants of the villages of Ravenloft.
07:37 Anyone repeating them is to be put to death immediately,
07:41 without trial, and before making any public statement.
07:44 They are, one, that our lord is involved in any way with the arts of necromancy.
07:50 Two, that Strad has made a pact with death to obtain his heart's desire,
07:55 or has therefore been transformed in any way.
07:58 Three, that the Baal-Virzi dagger used to kill Strad's brother was last known to be in Strad's possession.
08:05 Four, that the woman Tatyana plunged to her death while attempting to escape the embrace of Strad von Zarovich,
08:12 by order of Count Strad von Zarovich.

09:19 Oh right, the elf, I love her.
09:21 [Music]
09:32 I've never seen an elf closed up with books and soft chairs before,
09:38 soothing her sorrows with tuica.
09:41 Seems a pity, doesn't it?
09:43 [Music]
09:44 Are you speaking to me?
09:47 Books are the forest a mage journeys through, my friend,
09:51 sometimes counting herself lucky to find a treasure hidden in those paper leaves.
09:56 Oh, but please, allow me to embarrass our host.
10:01 You see, I've grown bored with his attempts to win my trust with bland tuica and false friendship.
10:07 Might an elven mage from Sithicus sign on with you?
10:11 [Music]
10:13 It was so badass that they mentioned Sithicus in this game, but they never gave us Sithicus!
10:20 I wish they could have given us Sithicus in this style.
10:24 Alright, so, option one.
10:27 If your spells prove as sharp as your tongue, you may be of some use.
10:31 Would you be willing to join our party?
10:33 And option two.
10:34 Though your tongue is sharp, perhaps you've too great a thirst for brandy wine to be of immediate service.
10:43 Will you be staying on here?
10:45 I'm gonna choose number one.
10:47 And dump the old fighter.
10:51 The old fighter's nice, but I need a solid mage.
10:55 It's just, I can't remember what her scores are for, uh, her ability scores are.
11:00 If there isn't... I need a mage with scores of 18 for intelligence.
11:07 We'll see.
11:08 Well, I already know what is of use in this place, and what is not.
11:15 If we tarry for any purpose, it should be to relieve our host of his stores of sweetmeats and tuica.
11:22 But other than a drink and a song in friendly company, we may leave by your leave.
11:28 Please! There are other books, magical volumes I haven't yet displayed before you.
11:34 You must stay. They're stored in my secret cellars near the good tuica, which I serve only to...
11:40 To stride, you mean.
11:42 Dear fellow, while I believe I've yet to taste a decent vintage of tuica from your stores, the bit about the magic falls from your tongue like a lie.
11:53 We'll be off now.
11:54 Well, if you're taking on another hand, I see an opportunity for a nap and a warm meal.
12:02 All this chasing about has my feet as numb as horses' hooves.
12:06 Should you wish to seek me out again, come to my home in Barovia, for there I'll be.
12:10 [Music]
12:23 Yeah, that's right. She doesn't have that grade of intelligence, which really sucks.
12:27 I think I need to use the, uh, the other mage.
12:30 The, the one that, uh, we saw in the, uh, western Barovian woods or whatever it is.
12:37 Yeah, near the cemetery.
12:39 No, it was the western Barovian woods, not the cemetery.
12:42 [Music]
13:12 [Music]
13:16 Your Excellency, Your Honor, uh, please forgive me, I'm not schooled in how to address the Burgomaster.
13:22 How do you-
13:23 My dear, sweet traveler, please.
13:28 We Burgomasters are called by our title.
13:31 I expect you will make my home yours while you are here.
13:35 In the name of Lord Strahd, whose humble servant I am, please relax. Enjoy.
13:42 [Music]
13:45 Burgomaster, we've heard so much of Count Strahd von Zarovich.
13:50 Strahd von Zarovich?
13:52 In some lands, weeks might pass before a traveler learns of the ruler's name, but not here.
13:58 Who is this man?
13:59 [Music]
14:01 Ah, I was coming to that.
14:03 You see, your interest in the Great One is matched by his interest in you.
14:08 As Burgomaster, I have been instructed to present you with a letter of invitation from Strahd himself.
14:15 It is a great honor.
14:18 Burgomaster, what does Strahd know of us?
14:30 Does he invite every visitor to his castle?
14:32 Was your elven guest invited?
14:35 At the risk of being rude, I say the dignity of my office would suffer were I to answer so many questions.
14:44 The honor of Strahd's enchanting offer extends to you alone.
14:49 My advice is not to refuse.
14:52 And if my words do not impress you, if I cannot persuade you, he will compel you to go.
14:59 His carriage awaits even now. Please allow me to take you there.
15:04 Agreed. Take us to Strahd's carriage.
15:12 Uh, that's really the only one.
15:14 Uh, the other one is the invitation is intriguing, but we shall not be compelled to travel anywhere perhaps another time.
15:20 You do-- you know, you need number one.
15:28 As promised, the Burgomaster directs you to Strahd's carriage.
15:33 While it is a beautifully appointed vehicle, you cannot help but notice there is no driver.
15:40 The steeds fret impatiently.
15:43 They appear intelligent, even anxious to fulfill their assigned duty.
15:49 [Whistles]
15:51 As the carriage comes about a bend in the terrain, you gain your first glimpse of Castle Ravenloft.
16:05 [Thunder]
16:07 Already gripped by apprehension, a sudden threat pulls you as the carriage at last approaches the gates of the castle.
16:15 [Music]
16:21 [Music]
16:25 [Music]
16:29 [Music]
16:32 [Music]
16:41 [Music]
16:52 [Music]
16:55 [Music]
17:03 Everything will be fine. We're guests after all.
17:13 Strange that I should say such a thing, yet there is in this air something which brings sweat to the palms.
17:20 My breath grows short and my heart pounds.
17:23 Well, as if for no reason my muscles tense for a fight.
17:28 [Music]
17:32 And this is the invitation.
17:38 Unto the visitors in my land, Count Strahd von Zarovich, Lord of Barovia, sends greetings.
17:45 Gentle travelers, I pray you accede to my humble wish and meet with me tonight in Castle Ravenloft.
17:52 Your activities have brought many questions to my mind, as you in turn must possess certain curiosities about me.
17:58 I feel a friendly interview to be in order.
18:01 My carriage shall bear you to the castle in both comfort and safety.
18:05 It is therefore in pleasurable anticipation of our conference that I will await your arrival.
18:10 Count Strahd von Zarovich
18:12 Oh, by the way, Sweetmeats. I just learned about this.
18:16 Brandy wine is a very, very light tasting alcoholic beverage.
18:22 It's like essentially 3-2 beer.
18:26 It was created specifically, it's like really water, it really is watered down brandy.
18:33 It's created specifically to kill the bacteria in water.
18:37 And Sweetmeats, I've been watching these YouTube videos, they're pretty fascinating.
18:42 Sweetmeats, it really is salted pork.
18:45 When the pork is so heavily salted and stored, when you leach the salt out of the pork, because you just can't eat it salted,
18:57 the pork actually turns really sweet.
19:01 And they call it, you know, sweet pork and sweetmeat.
19:05 Now you can have salted beef, but the beef turns, it's almost like turns into jerky.
19:13 And it's really difficult to have that kind of beef.
19:17 Pork really is the only one that turns sweet.
19:21 So anything that's a sweetmeat, it's a pork.
19:24 There's no other meat that can be sweetened like that.
19:28 Unless you like, I think you can candy food, but that's not really the same thing.
19:35 That's not a sweetmeat, that's candied meat.
19:37 Anyway, just thought I'd tell you, I found all that out.
19:40 [music]
20:07 Apparently the lord of this castle doesn't want us exploring his home or wandering too freely from our path.
20:12 With what we've heard of Strahd, I think, I say we go only through those rooms open to us.
20:18 For now, anyway.
20:20 [music]
20:49 [music]
20:58 The doors open upon a scene of warmth and invitation.
21:02 Yet before the richly laid table and other fine appointments of the room can be examined,
21:07 the single occupant of the chamber draws all attention.
21:13 It can be none other than Strahd von Zorovich.
21:17 [music]
21:22 Welcome to Castle Ravenloft.
21:25 I trust I have not inconvenienced you.
21:28 It is easy to forget how commanding the summons can seem to mere...
21:32 ...er, to wanderers such as you when exploring a new realm.
21:39 You understand that no ordinary tour of the world will lead you to this land.
21:44 All who enter it arrive in answer to a call, to a summons more binding than any a mere lord might give.
21:53 Here we are, all of us, and here we shall remain.
21:57 No road leads out of this mystical new place.
22:03 The land entraps many. Its ruler is no exception.
22:08 And so I have devoted my life to this cause.
22:11 It is the least a lord can do for his people, is it not?
22:15 My most recent study concerns certain portals, those dimensional gateways of which mages and philosophers speak.
22:25 One such portal may lie in the caverns west of Barovia, near the river.
22:31 Aside from myself, I believe you are the first to hear of it.
22:35 But please, before you rush to the shores of the Iblis, allow me to present you with a key.
22:41 If you are to gain entrance to these caverns, you will find it necessary.
22:47 I have no time to try the key myself, for adventure is a luxury I can ill afford.
22:53 However, as I see you are capable, and, as I trust, never betray your host, the key shall be yours for a time.
23:03 Go as my agent and search out this gateway beneath the Iblis.
23:09 But enough talk. Please, I have invited you here to join in a pleasant repast.
23:15 After we finish the best food and brandy wine Barovia has to offer, I will have my carriage return you to town.
23:24 The encounter ends as pleasantly as it began, with a heartfelt farewell and wishes for a safe journey from Strah, Banzarovich.
23:32 As the Lord of Raidenlof proven himself a gentleman, as the carriage clatters back across the bridge, there is time to reflect on this first encounter with Strahd.

26:02 - Answer one.
26:15 You seem surprised to see us, Burgomaster.
26:18 Did you think we would have met our fate by now?
26:20 - Surprised?
26:24 No, not I.
26:26 When we first met, I judged you
26:28 to have qualities Lord Strahd would not waste,
26:31 not quickly disregard.
26:33 Believe me, your journey will not end with undue haste.
26:38 And of course, if you have Strahd's blessing
26:41 while in our land, you have mine as well.

27:28 So I hope you enjoyed that.
27:31 I hope this is fun.
27:32 Next video, we're going to be crawling
27:33 underneath the village of Barovia,
27:38 finish the Paladin quest.
27:41 And I think then we get the key to the graveyard
27:45 and I want to get rid of this possession
27:48 before I go into the caverns of the Iblis
27:51 because the caverns of the Iblis have some bone golems.
27:54 I remember being a lot more difficult than normal.
27:57 Anyway, so that's it.
