Relive the South Point 400 from Las Vegas Motor Speedway that saw one playoff driver dominate and a close finish between two championship hopefuls.
Transcript
00:00 >> We're about to start the round of eight.
00:10 The possibility of locking up a spot in the championship four in front of these eight
00:15 playoff drivers.
00:17 Christopher bell, Kyle Larson making up row one.
00:20 Martin Truex Jr.
00:32 With a good push early for Christopher bell.
00:35 He's able to jump out front.
00:36 Larson has that second spot.
00:38 Third still contested.
00:46 >> Here comes Byron challenging his teammate for second.
00:59 >> We've got a problem on the front straightaway car going off into turn one.
01:07 Jones has a problem.
01:08 Looks like a right rear tire is flat on that car.
01:11 >> Absolutely.
01:12 >> There's those right rear tires we talked about.
01:16 >> The difference in this right rear tire is it doesn't look like it hit anything.
01:20 What kind of damage can be done to the car if the right rear blows up when it came off.
01:26 That was probably best case scenario for Erik Jones in regard to damaging the car.
01:32 >> Best case for the body work.
01:34 I don't know what's better for the diffuser.
01:37 Air in the tire.
01:38 I know what's better.
01:39 Air in the tire and not drag all that smoke you see.
01:41 It's dragging some of that under body.
01:44 The car can look perfectly all in one piece.
01:48 Near perfect.
01:49 Maybe a little marks on the right rear.
01:50 It can be down 10 or 20% of total down force.
01:54 Really interesting decision here with 14 laps to go on the stage.
01:57 31 laps on the tires.
01:59 New tires are going to be a huge advantage.
02:00 They only had eight sets of tires to run the entire race.
02:03 Kind of three extra when you look at the math.
02:05 >> It's bell and Larson again making up the front row.
02:09 Larson on the outside.
02:10 Bell on the inside.
02:11 Back into the gas to go.
02:20 Still door to door.
02:21 Into turn one.
02:23 Bell now with a little bit of an advantage.
02:25 Here comes the momentum out of the 5.
02:30 >> Big run coming on the outside to help Larson off into turn three there.
02:37 Blaney is trying to get three wide underneath keselowski.
02:40 Can't do it.
02:43 Brad back to the outside of reddick.
02:45 Reddick with a flood.
02:46 Got clear right there.
02:47 Not able to do it.
02:48 A lot of side drafting with the leaders down the front straightaway.
02:52 >> Two versus four tires.
02:54 Larson versus bell.
02:55 Larson with four fresh tires on that pit stop.
02:58 He'll clear the 20 of Christopher bell.
03:01 >> These two are going at it.
03:03 Coming to the end of this stage.
03:09 >> Can't give up a spot.
03:11 Blaney has to fight so hard.
03:13 Coming down 10 to the cut line.
03:17 >> They're both aggressive.
03:18 Martin Truex Jr.
03:19 Doesn't want to give up any position.
03:20 That's why they're racing centimeters apart.
03:24 Maybe less than that as we've seen contact between these two.
03:27 >> Blaney loving the bottom of the 3 and 4.
03:29 This car we're riding on board with.
03:32 Reddick, the Toyota cam, taking away the line that the 12 prefers on the bottom of the racetrack.
03:37 >> What a great job by his crew chief putting on two tires.
03:40 He was running 12th and now sitting here running fourth with two to go.
03:46 >> Here comes the surge out of the 19.
03:47 He gets to the inside of the 12.
03:49 Can he hold him off?
03:52 >> Big push right here coming from Kyle Busch.
03:53 Who is he going to help?
03:54 Here comes the run.
03:55 Wow.
03:56 He almost thought about going to the middle.
03:57 Backs off a little bit.
03:58 He's trying to help himself.
03:59 >> Blaney moving around.
04:00 They slide up the racetrack into the left side of Denny Hamlin here off of turn two.
04:10 >> Busch got so loose down there.
04:13 >> It's the final lap of stage one.
04:15 Again, the top ten gain stage points.
04:21 It's going to be Kyle Larson who's going to get the win of stage one.
04:26 >> Kyle finishing up in second.
04:31 Krasowski, Reddick, Truex Jr.
04:32 All gaining points.
04:33 Blaney, Hamlin, Busch, Harvick and Byron.
04:36 Denny Hamlin two tires.
04:39 Ty Gibbs two tires.
04:41 We'll see what happens.
04:42 They fan out.
04:43 And three and four wide as they enter turn one.
04:47 >> Look at this restart.
04:48 It's insane.
04:49 Kyle Busch on the top of the racetrack.
04:54 So far so good for martin Truex Jr.
04:55 As he shoots out to the lead.
04:58 >> I think they're so close to wide open that for the first two or three corners, Truex
05:04 will be fine.
05:05 Wide open is wide open on new tires or old tires.
05:07 You see instantly the momentum of Denny Hamlin and Brad.
05:10 The 19 probably had to be out of the gas a little down there.
05:15 >> And now how close will he be able to stay once these cars with the pressure tires are
05:23 able to get by him?
05:24 If they're able to get by him.
05:28 Side drafting from keselowski and Denny Hamlin.
05:33 They continue to fight for that second spot here for Chris Buescher in the 20.
05:38 Early in this stage, martin Truex Jr.
05:42 Continues to fall back.
05:46 A strategy gamble.
05:49 And now he's falling back to the fifth position.
05:54 >> He's going to keep on dropping back.
05:57 This is a pretty serious situation for the 19 team right here in the middle of stage
06:02 two.
06:03 You can hear in the radio.
06:04 You can hear Truex, he's like, guys, I don't know what to do.
06:10 And with these older tires, we say the further you fall back, the worse your problems are.
06:15 >> Into the wall, the 42.
06:17 Carson Hosevar.
06:18 Could this be a right rear tire issue?
06:21 >> Looks like his right rear tire is flat.
06:23 >> This is the team car of the 43 who had the flat tire earlier.
06:27 There you go.
06:28 Blew a tire out of Hosevar's radio.
06:30 Both of the legacy motor club cars, Jimmie Johnson in attendance.
06:35 This is not going to put a smile on his face as both the 42 and the 43 have both blown
06:39 right rear tires in today's race.
06:41 >> Looks like enough damage to the right side of this one.
06:43 It might end his day.
06:46 Big damage possibly there on the right rear.
06:49 He's going to try to pull back into his pit stall if he can make it all the way around
06:54 the racetrack.
06:55 The right side tires both down on the 42 of Hosevar.
06:58 It was announced earlier that he would be running the remaining races this year for
07:02 legacy motor club.
07:04 >> Right at the top of the racetrack in turn one and two.
07:08 Looks like he made contact with the wall.
07:13 Maybe the tire is going down before he gets to the corner.
07:18 So he tried to keep it against the fence maybe to slow the car down.
07:24 >> Over five.
07:25 >> Yeah, the 5 of Larson has slowed down.
07:28 I wonder if this is another issue.
07:30 >> A little bit, yeah.
07:32 >> There you go, Rick.
07:34 He said he hit the wall a little bit.
07:36 Cliff Daniels said it does not look terrible on TV.
07:39 So obviously 24 to go here in the state, Steve.
07:42 >> They're going to keep him out.
07:43 They're not going to make him pit here.
07:44 >> He's struggling with the balance of the car.
07:47 You see the car bobbling in the middle of the corner.
07:49 Here's the -- oh, wow.
07:53 That was massive.
07:54 >> My goodness.
07:55 >> So the car almost spins out.
07:58 He does a really incredible thing and basically just locks all four tires down.
08:03 And kind of that and the wall straightened the car out.
08:06 >> I saw the replay.
08:07 It's going to be tire heat at this point.
08:10 >> Remember, he was the XFINITY fastest lap earlier at over 183 miles an hour.
08:14 >> Another car on the wall at 48.
08:17 >> And this time it's bowman.
08:18 He's going to slide back in front of traffic.
08:21 The caution has come out.
08:22 >> That was almost a bad deal right there.
08:25 The car started to turn right, Rick, in front of oncoming traffic.
08:28 He's running ninth.
08:29 >> Guys, three laps ago Alex bowman radioed to his team that the right rear started feeling
08:34 kind of funny.
08:35 It was not like it was earlier in the run.
08:37 So something was going on.
08:38 >> He's damaged the car.
08:39 Now he has no steering.
08:40 >> The right rear tire is not flat.
08:42 So I don't know whether he -- he looks like he may have gotten out of control or lose
08:46 much like his teammate did.
08:48 Maybe he was having a vibration or an issue with the right rear.
08:51 It looks like he's got a -- he's gotten the car sideways and up into the fence much like
08:55 Larson.
08:56 >> I can't tell if the right rear has air or if it's off the ground or bent up.
08:59 There's so much damage.
09:01 It's weird.
09:02 But it's obvious, you know, to your point, junior, it's not torn up and off the wheel.
09:06 >> 17, it will be 16 to go after the restart.
09:11 Keselowski and Myron.
09:13 Keselowski takes the inside lane.
09:15 Myron on the outside.
09:19 Keselowski down on the apron trying to have an advantage as they go to one.
09:26 >> Larson trying to sneak around that top.
09:28 Can't quite get there.
09:29 He's going to push Kyle Busch down the back straightaway.
09:35 Harvick trying to get three wide.
09:37 >> Real close call there as he had to get out of the gas.
09:39 >> Now we're three wide there, Rick, for third place.
09:44 >> Makes it work as he goes by the 8.
09:46 Here comes the 8.
09:47 He side drafted him.
09:48 He pulled the 5 back.
09:49 >> And they're three wide in front of the entire field.
09:53 >> Up stage 2, Larson with a 1.4 second advantage over Ross Chastain.
10:01 >> For Bell and Denny Hamlin have worked their way up inside the top five running third and
10:05 fourth.
10:06 Keselowski has fallen back to that fifth spot.
10:10 Again the fresher Goodyear tires have paid off for Larson, Chastain, Bell and Hamlin.
10:18 Stage number two is going to go.
10:19 Kyle Larson, he swept the stages today.
10:22 It's the ninth time he has swept those stages in a race.
10:27 >> Wall contact.
10:28 We had pushing in the rear.
10:29 Took away some rear side force.
10:30 I would assume that's why we kind of have what we have right now.
10:34 Just thinking about why that run was so loose.
10:37 >> So, Steve, would that make sense to you?
10:39 That wall contact wasn't big but it could be affecting the car.
10:42 >> Cliff Daniel knows these cars as well as anyone.
10:44 If he feels there's a chance it could, I think he knows what he's doing.
10:47 The bright side, if that's the damage, Rick, because that car could have easily been junked.
10:51 It could have been a replay of other guys' issues in the playoffs but they still have
10:55 a chance even if the car has slight damage.
10:57 >> Could be the best save of the year as we get ready for the final stage.
11:02 They're back under way.
11:06 >> Not a great launch for that outside line.
11:08 The 20 is clear.
11:09 Christopher Bell down into turn one.
11:13 Take whatever he wants off of turn two here.
11:19 >> Three wide down the back stretch.
11:21 Nellis speedway.
11:24 Wide back stretch just off of Nellis air force base.
11:30 Second place is Ross Chastain.
11:33 Brad keselowski has third wrapped up.
11:35 >> We got a crash in two.
11:37 Sorry, Marty.
11:38 We got a car spinning around.
11:39 >> Chase Briscoe in the 14 goes around.
11:42 It looks like everyone is going to avoid.
11:44 You see the right rear tire is down.
11:46 Don't know if that was the cause of this spin.
11:48 The right front also is down.
11:50 >> Chase Briscoe running 20th.
11:52 Got way up the racetrack.
11:55 His car underneath him.
12:00 >> He might have four flat tires here as he's going to work his way back to pit road.
12:08 Right rear, right front, both are down as Briscoe is going to make his way back or at
12:13 least try to.
12:14 >> Steve, right at a time where you were talking about it being a very strange place.
12:18 Here we go.
12:19 As far as pits go.
12:22 Here he is just way up the racetrack trying to get on the outside of allmendinger.
12:26 Got in the wall and contact also.
12:30 >> It gets into stenhouse there.
12:32 Stenhouse goes up and makes contact with the wall.
12:34 Luckily as he comes down the track, not a lot of oncoming traffic really to have to
12:41 worry about.
12:42 >> For Tyler Reddick he said it fires off okay but then builds a little bit of a tick
12:48 free.
12:49 No major changes on that car.
12:51 >> Ryan Blaney stopping short.
12:55 That's his move.
12:56 It worked last time.
12:57 He needs it to be just about a half a number tighter this run.
12:59 Marty?
13:00 >> Kyle Larson told Daniels it felt like that was the best we were on the long run all day
13:04 long.
13:05 I feel like I need a little bit more turn especially if this is a run to the end of
13:08 the race.
13:09 Christopher Bell told Adam Stevens I don't want any changes.
13:10 We'll see if the pit crew can deliver.
13:11 They got in the lead last time.
13:12 It's going to be a drag race off pit road.
13:13 They will lose a couple of spots this time for Christopher Bell.
13:14 >> Big story.
13:15 >> I think he's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
13:16 >> He's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
13:17 >> He's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
13:18 >> He's going to be a little bit more aggressive.
13:21 >> Big stop for the 5 team.
13:23 Kyle Larson.
13:24 That's how he won his championship a couple years back.
13:27 Keselowski holding his spot there.
13:29 As you see just how close it was coming off pit road.
13:34 >> Green flag.
13:37 >> Green, green, green.
13:41 >> Rewind once again.
13:43 Going into turn one.
13:46 >> He's easily clearing and pulling away from the field.
13:50 >> Four wide back there for row five.
13:53 Down the back straightaway.
13:54 Still four wide.
13:55 Blaney went to the bottom.
13:56 He's going to lose a lot of spots here if he doesn't make something happen on the bottom
14:00 of the racetrack here.
14:03 >> Denny Hamlin going down.
14:11 Trying to get by that 22 of Logano.
14:15 One lap to go.
14:16 Presented by credit one bank.
14:20 Larson with a 3/10 of a second lead.
14:23 Bell.
14:24 A final effort through one and two.
14:27 Down the back stretch for the final time.
14:28 >> Big gain right there by the 20 car.
14:31 >> Through three and four for the final time.
14:34 Now lap traffic coming into play.
14:36 Bell on the high side.
14:39 Larson is going to drift up in front of him.
14:40 Does bell have enough?
14:42 It's Larson.
14:43 Bell.
14:44 Larson.
14:45 Larson is going to win.
14:46 What a finish by Kyle Larson.
14:47 >> Good job.
14:48 >> Larson advances to the championship four.
14:49 But what an effort by the 20 of Christopher bell.
15:07 >> The momentum was there off of turn four for the 20.
15:10 >> That was a team win if I've ever seen one.
15:13 Proud of this team.
15:14 Proud of you, Kyle.
15:15 Great job driving at the end.
15:16 Good job, Tyler.
15:17 >> That was a team win.
