00:00 Based on the DOST FNRI data, a Filipino family is wasting a lot of food every day.
00:07 How can we avoid that? Let's find out in the report of Katrina Son.
00:11 The 68-year-old Florida Mendez Amor sometimes relies on the food that is given to them.
00:24 I experience that sometimes they give us leftovers from the market where we used to go.
00:31 We need to eat what we cook.
00:34 I'm a butcher so we can eat twice a day.
00:38 But if Florida and her family have a problem eating,
00:43 based on the food consumption survey conducted by DOST FNRI in the 2018-2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey,
00:52 76 grams of food is wasted by a family every day.
00:56 In total, 2,592 metric tons of food was wasted that year.
01:04 A large part of the food wasted in the whole day is 56 grams of rice,
01:11 equivalent to a tablespoon, two teaspoons of vegetables, and two teaspoons of fish, chicken, or meat.
01:18 We call it plate waste. This is the food that can still be eaten.
01:24 It's still edible, but our families throw it away.
01:29 Based on the survey, the rich family has purchasing power,
01:33 and the large family does not plan to cook the food that is wasted.
01:39 The food that is wasted by the families in rural areas,
01:43 which have their own farm and the food is cheap in their area.
01:48 There are laws in the Senate and the House of Representatives that are far from food waste.
01:52 It can be through food donation, career distribution, and the recycling of our food.
01:59 According to DOST FNRI, to avoid food waste,
02:04 they plan to cook it so it's just right for the family.
02:07 If the family doesn't want cold rice, they can cook it.
02:11 If the fruits are overripe, they can make jam.
02:14 While the overripe vegetables can be used as a ricotta in soup.
02:18 Let's not waste food. Don't throw it away because many people are hungry.
