00:00 Meanwhile, rice is a must-have for most Filipinos.
00:05 But it's a problem for diabetics.
00:07 That's why the International Rice Research Institute has a solution to enjoy the "Rice is Life" lifestyle.
00:14 That's the first news of Donald T. Cunco.
00:17 For many Filipinos, rice is life.
00:23 Every day, each Filipino consumes 373 grams of rice, or 136 kilos.
00:33 But it's a different story for those who have diabetes
00:36 who can't eat unlea riced to avoid having a high blood sugar level.
00:42 Like Evan, who has been taking type 2 diabetes for 25 years.
00:47 I only eat a little rice, and I avoid all sweet foods.
00:53 The glycemic index, or GI, is a measure of how fast a food increases blood sugar or glucose.
01:01 Many foods have carbohydrates, like rice, that have a GI.
01:06 And usually, the GI of rice is high, especially white rice, which has a GI of 70 or higher.
01:12 But the International Rice Research Institute, or IRRI, wants to change this.
01:18 In front of President Bongbong Marcos, IRRI introduced their sample of low and ultra-low GI rice to the International Rice Congress.
01:26 It's for those who have diabetes.
01:29 In 2019, the survey started, but this year, the sample of low and ultra-low GI rice was completed.
01:36 The IRRI was given to the President.
01:39 Fast forward to this year, we now have defined the genetics for the low GI,
01:46 and for the first time ever anywhere in the world, the ultra-low GI.
01:52 We compared the sample of low GI rice to the ordinary well-milled rice that you can buy in the market.
01:58 At first glance, there is almost no difference.
02:01 The bottle of low GI rice is slightly smaller than the ordinary rice.
02:06 But this is good news for those like Evan, who no longer need to measure their daily rice intake.
02:12 As long as the rice and the rice are delicious.
02:16 Can you now eat rice?
02:18 Yes, I can.
02:20 IRRI mentioned that the development of low GI rice in their collaboration with PhilRice will start in the Philippines.
02:27 It is expected that in the coming years, the real varieties of low GI and ultra-low GI rice
02:34 will be used in the Philippines.
02:37 This new discovery will enable us to convert any rice variety anywhere in the world
02:45 into a low GI or ultra-low GI variety starting in the Philippines.
02:52 This is the first news.
