00:02 Gotta be real careful for stonefish as well.
00:05 That's why I'm wearing shoes at the moment.
00:07 First crayfish I've ever caught.
00:10 Let's go check the crab pots.
00:11 What's going on everyone?
00:12 Welcome back to another video.
00:13 So I've just been dropped along this remote coastline
00:17 here in Southeast Queensland.
00:18 And this is where I'm gonna be surviving
00:20 for the next three days.
00:22 Just out there in that huge passage,
00:24 it's filled with sharks,
00:25 there's been crocodiles that have been spotted
00:27 this far south,
00:27 and about a kilometer and a half up that way
00:30 is a massive set of mangroves,
00:31 which just holds life for so many species.
00:34 In that rock pool just there,
00:35 I caught one of the most venomous creatures on earth,
00:38 the blue ringed octopus.
00:39 And I think it was a hundred meters down that way,
00:42 I caught the stonefish,
00:43 the most venomous fish on earth.
00:45 So I'm gonna be living here with these deadly animals
00:47 over the next three days,
00:49 catching my own food.
00:50 I've brought no food,
00:51 no water out here with me.
00:53 And the only thing that I've got to help me
00:55 on this adventure is this hand spear out here.
00:57 I got it second hand for $10,
00:59 so it's very affordable,
01:01 and this is what I'm gonna be using
01:02 to go hunting along this area for the next three days,
01:06 catch my own food,
01:07 cook it up out here.
01:08 Not gonna be an easy place to survive out here,
01:11 but I think it's gonna be a pretty cool mission.
01:12 Let's try to catch some food.
01:14 So what I think I'm gonna do first
01:24 is start heading along this coastline
01:26 and see what animals I can catch.
01:28 Hopefully get something for breakfast.
01:30 If I can't get anything out here,
01:31 I'll head up into the mangroves
01:33 and try and get a mud crab
01:34 or try spear a fish up there.
01:36 But yeah, this is a pretty cool place to start.
01:38 Let's see what we can find.
01:54 So I was just hunting around looking for squid,
01:57 and I spotted this fella just blending in.
01:59 I actually thought he was a squid for a second.
02:01 He kinda has the same appearance as one.
02:03 What even is that?
02:04 I think it's some kind of puffer fish.
02:06 He's filling himself with water out here in the mangroves.
02:09 He might honestly be poisonous.
02:10 I feel like if I ate him,
02:12 I would definitely not be in a good way.
02:13 I hope me picking him up is okay as well.
02:16 (laughs)
02:18 Are you kidding me?
02:19 I think what he's doing is as I'm going to pick him up,
02:22 he's filling himself up with water.
02:24 So he's still able to breathe right now out of water.
02:26 He's got a bunch inside that big,
02:28 whatever that thing's called that he is filling with water.
02:31 But that is just so cool.
02:32 I wish I knew more about this fish.
02:33 I'm gonna go home and research it a bit more.
02:35 All right, you ready to go, mate?
02:37 See this right here?
02:47 That is a big flathead print from a big animal.
02:52 Look, there's another one over here.
02:54 Might even be the same one.
02:55 I reckon he's out that way.
02:57 Let's go and see if we can get him.
02:59 So when I got dropped here this morning,
03:00 I got my drone up in the air to scout this land
03:03 that I'm gonna be surviving on.
03:05 Way up that way, there's a big mangrove ecosystem,
03:07 and it's good to see on the way up there.
03:09 There's plenty of sea turtles hanging around,
03:11 lots of shovelnose sharks, other fish species.
03:14 But I reckon most of the food
03:16 that I'm gonna be able to catch
03:17 is gonna be up in the mangroves.
03:19 There was just a really big mud crab
03:21 that was sitting up here,
03:23 and it went down into the deeper water.
03:25 So I've dropped the spear,
03:27 and I'm just gonna be walking up here,
03:29 seeing if I can grab one.
03:30 Big mud crab!
03:51 (soft music)
03:52 Just through there, just over my right shoulder,
03:55 is a huge male mud crab.
03:57 This is gonna be my breakfast if I can catch him.
04:01 There's another hole right there.
04:03 Okay, we gotta be careful of that as well.
04:04 That's where he came from.
04:05 Hey, mate.
04:06 All right.
04:08 So we're out here in the mangroves surviving,
04:13 and this is gonna be my breakfast.
04:16 Big male mud crab.
04:18 Take a look at that, mate.
04:19 He's definitely the legal size.
04:21 That is a huge claw.
04:23 Not bad at all.
04:25 Yes!
04:26 Let's go.
04:27 So we've caught ourselves some lunch right here
04:31 out in the mangroves.
04:32 We're sitting in a pretty good place right now.
04:34 We've got a big mud crab that we're gonna cook up,
04:36 but the thing with these three-day survival videos, right,
04:39 maybe if I had water,
04:41 I could literally just lay down here on the sand,
04:43 and I'd be okay for three days.
04:44 My goal every time I come out and film these videos,
04:47 even if it's just for 24 hours,
04:49 is I wanna thrive out here.
04:51 I still wanna get something with that hand spear,
04:53 but yeah, not a bad start to this three-day adventure.
04:56 I knew it was gonna be a crazy one from the get-go,
04:58 and that's a pretty crazy animal
04:59 to catch first up in the morning.
05:01 So the reason why I was being careful with this mud crab
05:04 is 'cause these huge claws that they have
05:07 just on the front there,
05:08 they're absolutely massive,
05:09 and they got so much power in them as well.
05:11 Kind of the same as a crocodile's jaw.
05:13 See that?
05:14 I can easily hold it shut, same as big crocodiles,
05:16 but once they clamp down,
05:17 you're not getting them back open.
05:19 These mud crabs have a defense mechanism.
05:21 If it was to get a hold of me,
05:23 what it would do is it would drop its claw off straight away.
05:25 They can regrow their claws,
05:27 and I'd be left with a big claw hanging on my arm.
05:29 I've been done by a few smaller mud crabs,
05:31 and it's not fun at all.
05:33 I'm sure one of this size would be likely
05:35 to break your finger, maybe even take it off.
05:37 Let's get out of here, cook up this mud crab,
05:39 and then start hunting around again.
05:41 Find a place to set up camp for the night.
05:43 (dramatic music)
05:47 (footsteps crunching)
05:50 Okay, so before we cook it up on the fire,
06:01 we're just gonna break this crab open.
06:03 So how you actually do it is this crab's now dead,
06:06 but you grab this bottom part of the shell,
06:09 lift it up, take the top of its head off,
06:13 and we'll snap it in half, just like that.
06:16 And what we want is to clean all of these filters out,
06:20 and all of this orangey stuff as well.
06:22 There's one side done.
06:26 And there we go.
06:30 Let's go make a fire up outside the mangroves,
06:33 and cook it up.
06:34 (dramatic music)
06:37 (footsteps crunching)
06:40 Successful first day out here in the mangroves.
07:02 Mate, at the moment, we're thriving.
07:04 Sun's just going down.
07:05 After we cook up these muddies,
07:07 I'm gonna go find a place to set up camp for the night
07:09 in the mangroves, and I've brought a torch with me
07:12 so we can go exploring after dark,
07:14 try and get something for dinner as well.
07:16 All right.
07:16 Ready, we'll chuck 'em in.
07:19 And number two, just in like that.
07:24 There's nothing quite as exciting as coming out to a place
07:27 like the mangroves with no food,
07:29 and challenging myself to survive out here
07:31 with the other animals, and not only catch my own food,
07:34 but actually eat good as well.
07:36 That mud crab would be worth around $100 in a store.
07:39 But yeah, it's nice to be back in Australia.
07:41 If you ever get the opportunity wherever you live,
07:43 go out into nature, try catch your own food, cook it up,
07:47 drink some creek water, walk around barefoot.
07:49 I always feel the most connected with this land
07:52 when I'm doing things like this.
07:54 Oh, there we go.
07:56 What an epic first day to start off this three-day mission.
07:59 Mm.
08:03 I'm eating so much dirt right now.
08:05 I reckon I'm gonna head straight down to the water.
08:07 So as soon as the sun sets, because the tide's going out,
08:10 we want it to be pretty high.
08:12 I'm gonna head into the mangroves
08:13 and see if I can get anything with the hand spear.
08:16 Mm.
08:19 See this right here?
08:25 This is one of the species we were looking for.
08:33 Look at that.
08:33 Little shovel nose ray.
08:38 That's so cool.
08:39 Take a look at this fellow right here.
08:49 Just walking the sand flats, looking for some squid.
08:55 And I reckon this guy is as well.
08:56 He's probably looking for a feed tonight.
08:59 So many different species
09:01 out while you're walking the flats at night.
09:04 Oh, look at that.
09:23 (wind blowing)
09:26 Look at that little squid right there.
09:38 All right, first night camping in the mangroves.
09:40 We're gonna set up the hammock that we brought out here,
09:42 sleep out here tonight, and continue the adventure tomorrow.
09:46 Pretty successful day though.
09:47 We caught a lot of food.
09:49 Now we get to sleep out here.
09:50 Luckily in winter out here,
09:51 there's not as many mosquitoes, which is a bonus, I guess.
09:54 I'm gonna take my shoes off,
09:56 go to sleep and continue this adventure tomorrow.
09:59 We'll wake up early as the sun's rising
10:02 and go see if we can catch some breakfast.
10:04 Not a bad place to wake up to.
10:09 Are you kidding me right now?
10:11 Look at this.
10:12 Complete glass off.
10:15 Okay, so it's currently day two at the moment.
10:18 We just woke up.
10:19 It's an absolutely beautiful day, completely flat.
10:22 It's low tide at the moment.
10:24 What I think I'm gonna do this morning
10:25 is start hunting again and try to catch some fish.
10:28 You saw last night we went out spear fishing
10:30 and managed to get a little squid.
10:32 Squid, right there.
10:34 It's just a little one,
10:35 but I'm gonna try and get him with the spear.
10:37 There he is.
10:38 Got him.
10:43 I was almost gonna cook it up
10:44 just out of the mangroves last night,
10:45 but I thought what I'd do is I'll take it up
10:47 into the mangroves this morning
10:49 and I'll chuck little pieces of it
10:51 out the front of snags and banks
10:53 that I think fish would be sitting under
10:55 and I'll be waiting there with the hand spear
10:57 to hopefully get him and cook him up for breakfast.
10:59 The goal is to get a mangrove jack.
11:01 I've never got one of them with the hand spear before,
11:03 so yeah, hopefully we can get one today,
11:05 but we're gonna go for a bit of a walk first
11:07 up this coastline.
11:08 Day two, mate.
11:09 Three day survival, let's go.
11:11 (gentle music)
11:14 I've just taken all my important belongings
11:25 out of my pockets so I can jump on something
11:28 if the opportunity arises.
11:30 The opportunity has arose, my friend.
11:33 Well, that was embarrassing.
11:35 I didn't even catch him.
11:36 Actually having a great time out here.
11:39 I wanna try and catch one of those shovelnose rays.
11:41 Get it up close to the camera, they're so cool.
11:43 Hey, big fella.
11:44 Good morning.
11:47 Out here, gotta be real careful for stonefish as well.
11:51 That's why I'm wearing shoes at the moment.
11:54 Brim, right there.
11:57 He's in this deeper pocket
12:06 and I reckon he's legal as well.
12:08 (gentle music)
12:11 Missed him.
12:18 Where did he go?
12:28 No.
12:29 If he's in all this stuff, I'm not seeing him.
12:33 (gentle music)
12:36 There he is.
12:41 Got him.
12:54 We got breakfast right here.
12:58 Let's go make a fire and cook it up.
13:00 (gentle music)
13:02 There we go.
13:11 (gentle music)
13:13 Catching my own food, living off the land out here.
13:38 It's really cool coming out
13:40 and doing a survival adventure like this.
13:42 Very grounding experience.
13:45 Fresh fish.
13:48 This isn't even a survival challenge.
13:56 I'm eating better out here than I do when I'm back home.
14:06 It's a hard life, but someone has to do it.
14:09 Ready?
14:25 Look over here.
14:25 Come on, mate.
14:28 Come up to this surface.
14:35 So in this creek right here, there's no crocodiles.
14:38 Well, over the past 30 years or so,
14:40 there's been two confirmed crocodile sightings,
14:43 but for one to be in here at the moment,
14:44 it would be the rarest thing ever.
14:46 If there was a crocodile and it grabbed me,
14:48 it would be my time to go
14:49 because they don't come down this far south
14:51 and sadly, if they do, they're killed.
14:53 In about two or three weeks time,
14:55 I'm actually heading up North Queensland with my mate,
14:58 catching up with him and going out looking for crocs
15:00 deep in Cape York.
15:01 So that should be a pretty cool adventure.
15:03 Stay tuned for that one.
15:04 We'll be going out in the boat, catching a heap of barra,
15:07 cooking them up, living off the land,
15:08 and I'll probably go on some more cool adventures
15:10 while I'm up that way.
15:11 So this is where I'm gonna set up my hammock for tonight.
15:14 Tomorrow's when we actually get out of here.
15:16 It's fully high tide at the moment,
15:18 so it won't come up any higher
15:19 and hopefully no crocs will be able to grab me.
15:22 Not a bad place to be setting up camp.
15:28 Yesterday was a lot further into the mangroves.
15:31 What an arvo, what an adventure.
15:33 (water splashing)
15:36 Day three, out here in the mangroves.
15:54 Got hammered by mosquitoes and sand flies last night,
15:57 but still been a really cool and epic adventure
16:00 over the past three days.
16:01 The plan for today is I'm actually gonna head back
16:03 to the sunny coast about two hours down south.
16:07 My mate's taking me out in the boat
16:08 where we're gonna be diving for some big crayfish.
16:11 He said a bunch of crab pots up the creek as well.
16:13 But yeah, I'm so grateful to come out here on this land
16:16 and be able to survive like this
16:17 and take all of you along for this adventure.
16:20 I reckon the coolest part is just coming.
16:22 I've never caught a crayfish with my hands before,
16:24 so that should be pretty cool.
16:26 So we're gonna be diving, spearfishing.
16:28 I'm gonna get the gear on and jump in.
16:30 (water splashing)
16:33 (dramatic music)
16:36 (water splashing)
16:39 (laughing)
16:47 - Bit small? - Yeah.
16:49 (water splashing)
16:51 (dramatic music)
16:57 (water splashing)
16:59 - Cray?
17:07 All right, I'll come over.
17:10 So after swimming around for about an hour,
17:12 we spotted a big crayfish sitting underneath a rock.
17:15 Now I wanted to go down and grab him out,
17:17 but these crayfish are covered in spikes.
17:20 And last time my mate did that,
17:21 his hands were swollen for about a week.
17:24 He had to go to the hospital.
17:25 - You can literally put the spear right by his lips,
17:30 do it slowly, take your time.
17:32 And make sure it's literally right in front of his face
17:34 and he'll bang across.
17:35 - Yeah, right.
17:36 - Just no rush.
17:37 If you go out of breath, just come back up,
17:38 he won't go anywhere.
17:39 - Yeah.
17:40 'Cause they're so sharp and covered in like slime,
17:42 so they get infected really easy.
17:44 Queensland is the only state you're allowed
17:46 to shoot these crayfish with spear guns,
17:48 but what you should do every single time,
17:50 and what we did with this crayfish in particular,
17:53 is we went and checked that it wasn't a female with eggs.
17:56 So yeah, we dived down there a couple of times,
17:58 scoped it out.
17:59 I gotta come like down a bit more.
18:01 - You gotta come from that way a bit more.
18:03 - Yeah.
18:04 Sitting up on the surface, catching my breath,
18:06 and then I dived down and got a good shot on him.
18:09 (dramatic music)
18:12 (water bubbling)
18:14 (laughing)
18:28 - Got him.
18:29 - Nice work.
18:29 - He's a fast cray.
18:30 First crayfish I've ever caught.
18:32 Next time we're gonna be grabbing them.
18:34 We just forgot the gloves this time,
18:35 so we couldn't do that.
18:36 Let's go check the crab pots.
18:38 (water bubbling)
18:41 (dramatic music)
18:43 Oh, there we go.
19:03 (dramatic music)
19:06 (water bubbling)
19:09 Oh my.
19:18 Seems like this one was set in a pretty good place.
19:29 Just had some fish frames in it.
19:31 So now we got a bunch of muddies and a big crayfish
19:34 that we're gonna cook up.
19:35 Those are pretty nice sized ones as well.
19:37 All right, we're gonna tie these up
19:38 and keep going, seeing if we can get any more.
19:40 (boat engine roaring)
19:44 Oh, oh, that's a big one.
19:48 - That's a male, that's a male, that's a,
19:51 they're all males.
19:52 And I think all five of them are legal.
19:55 - Chuck him in, mate.
19:56 No bad feed.
19:59 (boat engine roaring)
20:02 Oh.
20:07 That's another legal one, and then I think two females.
20:13 (boat engine roaring)
20:16 So we just rode out here.
20:20 I've had a massive few days out catching my own food,
20:23 living off the land and living off the ocean.
20:25 What we're gonna do now is camp out here tonight.
20:28 We've got a little fire going.
20:29 We're gonna cook up a feed.
20:30 And what we're cooking up is all of this stuff
20:32 in the esky over here.
20:34 Mate, that is not bad at all.
20:36 He knows to cook up that crayfish.
20:38 I think we're gonna make some crab wraps.
20:40 But what we need to do first is clean out all these mud crabs
20:43 and crayfish, get the pot boiling on there,
20:45 and yeah, cook them up.
20:47 And that right there is three big mud crabs.
20:56 The best way to cook these crabs
20:59 is in the same water that they're living in.
21:01 Last big claw.
21:09 Mm.
21:15 That looks so good, eh?
21:19 - Yeah.
21:19 - All right, they're ready.
21:22 (metal clanking)
21:25 All right, there we go.
21:34 We'll chuck some sauce on it, fresh crab wraps.
21:36 All right.
21:39 Gonna be posting plenty more videos like this
21:45 throughout this year, traveling around.
21:47 We're heading up to North Queensland soon
21:49 to film crocodiles and all the cool animals up there.
21:51 We'll be living off the land, catching barramundi,
21:54 cooking it up, and yeah, camping out there
21:56 with all those cool species of animals.
21:58 This actually does taste so good.
21:59 We're gonna finish this off, go for a bit of a camp tonight,
22:02 wake up tomorrow, head back home and edit this video.
22:05 Thank you so much for watching.
22:06 Like, comment, subscribe if you wanna support me.
22:08 New videos every week.
22:10 See you again next week in the next adventure.
