Born Free’s founder patron Dame Joanna Lumley lends her voice to a powerful and evocative animation calling for the urgent, humane phasing-out of captive elephants in UK zoos.

‘Enough Is Enough’ tells the heartbreaking story of Pole Pole, the elephant whose death at London Zoo, 40 years ago today, led to the birth of Born Free, the international wildlife charity.

00:02 Our true story starts with a little elephant
00:06 called Puli Puli.

00:11 - I don't understand.
00:19 I'm frightened.
00:20 I see thick bars everywhere, as thick as trees.
00:29 I pace up and down, the same paces,
00:34 feet in the same places.
00:36 A prisoner with no hope of release, ever.
00:42 Kept in a yard, locked in a concrete cell.
00:47 No hope, no purpose.
00:51 I want to be free.
00:53 I'm a prisoner like those before me,
00:55 whose footsteps I follow.
00:57 But what else is there?
00:59 Except to rock and pace and sway and search for dreams.

01:07 Everything is provided, except purpose and hope.
01:17 And the visitors watching, they don't understand.
01:25 They think we're playing.
01:27 (dramatic music)
01:29 Time has no meaning.
01:32 There is no escape.
01:33 The only real way out is death.
01:37 Ah, I understand.
01:52 I am going home.
01:57 (elephant trumpets)
02:00 - Enough is enough.
02:02 Dozens of elephants, intelligent and sentient,
02:07 still languish in UK zoos.
02:09 Whether taken from the wild or bred in captivity,
02:14 they die young and suffer mental anguish,
02:17 denied their life of freedom in the sun.
