Dans les années 1970, à Los Angeles, Jackson Healy, un ancien boxeur devenu homme de main, est approché par une employée du ministère de la Justice, qui lui demande de retrouver Amelia, sa fille disparue. Jackson se tourne vers le détective privé Holland March et le convainc, par la force, à collaborer avec lui sur son enquête. Les deux privés commencent leurs investigations mais rapidement, ils se retrouvent avec une affaire de meurtre sur les bras : celui d'une starlette de l'industrie pornographique. De fil en aiguille, ils mettent bientôt au jour une énorme conspiration impliquant les hautes sphères du pouvoir...
