00:00 here and in the quadrants behind right there.
00:03 Our summer annuals finally reached the point
00:05 where they started to look tired.
00:07 They lasted forever.
00:08 So we had mostly purple annuals in this whole area.
00:11 It was a Supertunia Bordeaux in the back.
00:13 In the pots, we had Meteor Shower Verbena,
00:16 Supertunia Royal Velvet, and Superbena Violet Ice.
00:19 I did have a few Apple Blossom, or were they,
00:22 they were Apple Blossom or Quicksilver Geraniums
00:24 that I had started from seed in the pots as well,
00:27 but they got swallowed up pretty quick.
00:29 And then down here, we had Salvia
00:31 and more of the Superbena Violet Ice.
00:33 And I highly recommend any of the varieties
00:35 that were in this area.
00:36 They were so beautiful.
00:38 So here's what we're gonna do now.
00:40 I was gonna take this very fall and do big kale
00:44 and centerpiece with like dried elements,
00:46 but here we are mid-October,
00:48 and it's not gonna be very long
00:50 until we're wanting to do winter containers.
00:53 And I thought to kind of bridge the gap,
00:54 not have to do too much switching around,
00:57 maybe we could put some evergreens in here
00:59 that might look like little Christmas trees.
01:01 It would be pretty for a fall arrangement,
01:03 but also pretty with lights in it for Christmas time.
01:06 And we're gonna keep everything around the heartleaf
01:08 fairly simple this year in terms of Christmas lights.
01:10 So I think it'll be perfect,
01:12 especially because I was thinking
01:14 of using fresh cut Christmas trees.
01:16 You know, my parents' garden center carries those every year,
01:18 but if we could plant these in here now
01:20 and then plant them out in the new property next spring,
01:23 I think that would be amazing.
01:25 These are Norway Spruce.
01:26 They've got that just beautiful
01:27 kind of delicate evergreen structure.
01:30 You know, their needles are a little bit shorter than pines.
01:32 Norway Spruce do really well for us.
01:34 I wanted to show you a picture
01:36 of what they look like a little bit bigger,
01:38 and they grow big, like 80 by 20, hardy to zone two.
01:42 Oh, I love it.
01:43 And then around the base,
01:44 it might end up just being these two.
01:46 I think this might make it look a little bit too busy
01:50 for what I'm going for.
01:50 I don't know, we'll have to see how it goes.
01:53 And I don't even know how much room I'm gonna have.
01:54 I might decide to just do the evergreen alone
01:57 and keep it very simple,
01:59 because I think once we sink this down,
02:01 we may not have much room to plant anything around it.
02:03 It's pretty wide,
02:04 which will just mean more fall plants for somewhere else.
02:07 I haven't done anything in front of the chicken coop.
02:09 So if we have plants left over today and we have time,
02:11 we might end up over there.
02:12 But here are the other three in the back of the gator.
02:16 And they're just gorgeous.
02:18 I've been eyeballing them down at the garden center
02:20 for most of the season, and I'm so happy.
02:23 They had six left and I picked up five today.
02:27 I picked up four for the corners of the Hartley
02:29 and one for possibly next to the chicken coop.
02:30 And then with the purple kale, if we have enough,
02:34 it would look so pretty to plant these out
02:39 with these big, gorgeous plants.
02:41 But I think it's just gonna take getting into the project
02:43 and just seeing how we can make the plant stretch
02:45 and where we can utilize what.
02:47 Ah, so fun.
02:49 It's a nice day out today too.
02:50 A little bit on the breezy side, but the sun is super warm.
02:52 I am gonna go grab my gloves though
02:54 because the Norway spruce,
02:55 while they are not as prickly as a blue spruce,
02:58 they still can get ya.
02:59 So I'm gonna wear gloves for this part.
03:01 These look brand new.
03:05 And you might remember in the area right behind the Hartley,
03:07 we did have tulips in there last year.
03:09 So this space right here, we had the sauna tulips
03:11 that were absolutely phenomenal.
03:13 We actually pulled all of those up
03:15 and they went to a friend who has a flower farm.
03:18 She sells cut flowers.
03:19 So she planted those, which is awesome.
03:20 So this is clear.
03:21 Like I can get in there with an auger
03:23 and zip holes in here really quickly.
03:25 And I'm not planning on doing tulips again this year
03:27 because I wanna do something different
03:28 in the spring in this space.
03:30 So it's kind of perfect, perfect timing to try out some kale.
03:33 So let's just get into this, you guys.
03:35 We'll do the pots first,
03:36 then we'll start working our way around
03:38 and then we'll do a tour in the end.
03:39 I'm excited about this.

08:31 All right, guys, I am gonna call it for the day.
08:58 We've got a gator full of supplies I need to put away.
09:01 I still need to water everything in
09:02 and we did get quite a bit done.
09:03 The four containers around the Hartley,
09:05 the four quadrants back behind it,
09:07 and the one pot partially done by the chicken coop.
09:10 And I say partially done because I might come in
09:12 and pop some pansies right below it.
09:14 However, I think it just looks sweet
09:16 and perfect just the way it is.
09:18 I do need to plant up the window box,
09:21 but because I'm kind of out of time,
09:23 I'm just gonna leave it for today
09:24 because I want to have time to repot these geraniums
09:27 when I do clean this out.
09:29 And I've got a few in the ground
09:30 I want to probably dig up and repot as well.
09:33 I am really happy with this evergreen right here.
09:36 It's just a nice little weight
09:37 on this corner of the chicken coop.
09:39 It's an interesting spot because you guys know
09:41 this is a super narrow flower bed
09:43 and I can't go any wider because that's the driveway.
09:45 And right behind it,
09:46 there's an electrical box in the ground.
09:49 So, you know, it's limiting
09:52 to what you can put in this area.
09:53 So having a container here is really nice.
09:56 I do have some little lime hydrangeas
09:57 that are gorgeous right here
09:59 and they're on the north side of this coop.
10:01 They don't get very much sun
10:02 and they're still doing really well
10:04 and they've got a really nice color.
10:06 I'll probably put coleus around this next season.
10:09 This is actually a new electric box, like in the last year.
10:12 I used to be able to plant up the whole thing.
10:14 So anyway, I'm really happy with this right here
10:16 because this will take us right through into winter.
10:19 Okay, now let's walk back behind the coop
10:21 and take a look at the area behind the Hartley.
10:23 I'm so happy with how it came out.
10:25 Look at this.
10:26 Look at the color and the uniformity.
10:29 Oh, I love it so much.
10:31 We've got two different kinds of ornamental kale here.
10:34 This is the Yokohama red
10:35 and it probably will stay about that size.
10:38 So we'll come in with a little mulch
10:39 to cover up all of the tubes in here,
10:42 but it turned out perfect.
10:44 I had to steal two.
10:45 The containers we did with the little black crows
10:47 up front in the Versailles garden,
10:48 I used this variety of kale,
10:49 not knowing I was gonna actually plant it back here
10:52 and I needed a few more to make it even,
10:55 but it worked out perfect
10:56 because I had two of the small coral queens
10:58 that I just went and grabbed this variety out
11:00 and popped the coral queens in and it looks great still.
11:03 And we have it to uniform,
11:04 which in a situation like this,
11:06 you kind of want it to be, you know?
11:08 So there are what, 13?
11:10 Yeah, 13 in each one of these squares.
11:13 So the two with the Yokohama red
11:15 and two with the coral queen.
11:20 Is that not gorgeous?
11:23 I think it's gorgeous.
11:24 I absolutely love that.
11:26 They're so pretty.
11:27 Still haven't figured out
11:28 what we're gonna do in the center here, clearly.
11:30 Give you a different angle.
11:31 Looking back over it this way,
11:32 isn't that just so pretty?
11:34 I love it.
11:35 And the nice thing about kale
11:37 and pansies that we planted today,
11:38 they're very cold tolerant.
11:40 So they will hold up to quite a lot this winter
11:43 and will still bring some color and interest.
11:45 I did lightly trim the boxwoods
11:47 and I do think that that helped out quite a bit.
11:50 When we pruned a couple of weeks ago,
11:52 they were just smothered by Supertunia Bordeaux
11:55 at that moment.
11:56 So we couldn't access the plants.
11:58 So I did do a light trim there and just a training trim.
12:01 And I think they look really nice.
12:03 So let's go take a look at the pots
12:06 that we did in the beginning.
12:07 Look at those Norway spruces.
12:10 Oh, they're gonna be so cute
12:13 with fairy lights on them for Christmas.
12:17 This was my most wonky one.
12:20 It has a bald spot right in here
12:25 or a bald spot down here.
12:27 So I had to pick which bald spot
12:28 I wanted to have more exposed.
12:29 So I picked the one down below
12:31 'cause I could kind of fill it with the dusty Miller.
12:34 But oh, the front right here was in the sun when we planted
12:36 and I have not watered these.
12:38 I think I mentioned that already.
12:39 I haven't watered these yet, they need it.
12:40 So I'll come along and do that.
12:42 And then I need to still come in and prune these,
12:46 trim these up a little bit
12:47 and then possibly do a few more kale in either end.
12:50 Still have artichokes going strong in the cold frames.
12:54 Really pretty texture.
12:58 This side's still in the sun.
13:00 Oh, they're the cutest Christmas trees ever, ever.
13:07 I love them.
13:08 And I love as you walk up,
13:09 you've got that uniformity, you know,
13:11 and a really strong evergreen structure
13:13 that will be there all winter long.
13:15 And the orange pansies in the pot match the orange pansies
13:18 that are in these urns back here.
13:21 So a lot of nice soft color.
13:23 So now I'm gonna go in and make dinner.
13:24 And you guys, if this recipe is good,
13:26 I'll share it with you.
13:27 It's a stuffed butternut squash.
13:29 You bake the butternut squash kind of by itself
13:31 and then you flip it over to where like the inside
13:33 is exposed and you put Italian sausage and sage
13:36 and rosemary and garlic and cranberries and pecans
13:39 and spinach all, and what else?
13:41 Am I missing something?
13:42 That's all been kind of sauteed together.
13:46 You put that in the butternut squash
13:47 and kind of over the top and bake it more.
13:50 It sounds so good and so many autumn flavors,
13:52 but I have to get in there and do that
13:53 because it takes 45 minutes
13:55 for the butternut squash to bake.
13:56 It's like 4.30 right now, maybe five.
13:59 I don't know.
14:00 We might be eating late tonight.
14:02 So anyway, thank you guys so much for watching this video.
14:04 I hope you enjoyed it and we will see you in the next one.
