00:00 There's tough luck today, but at the halfway stage was there a feeling that
00:05 maybe you guys had left a few runs out there?
00:08 No, look I think you know we set the platform there at that sort of 35 over
00:13 mark I think it was very similar to what India were at that stage and and
00:16 obviously we knew that you know India's got a world-class death bowling unit and
00:19 and for us it was trying to cash in at the end and I thought the way India bowled
00:22 was pretty special obviously. Shami got the rewards but also Bumrah the way
00:27 they and Siraj the way they they took wickets and that 40 overs sort of
00:30 probably held us back a little bit but we also knew that if we could have taken
00:33 wickets early and as we showed through the middle keep trying to apply pressure
00:36 then we'll take the game deep and we'll do what Blackcaps do and keep fighting
00:40 to the end and you never know.
00:42 Awesome, talk to us a bit about your innings you went in there at 19 foot 2
00:46 what was going on through your mind and what were the conversations like with
00:49 Rajan?
00:50 Yeah like it was awesome back with Raj, he's obviously in a rich vein of form at
00:54 the moment and we were just having some fun out there and taking in what
00:58 what is an amazing World Cup to be a part of you know to play at grounds like
01:01 this and at crowds like this it's pretty special for us Kiwis who live on
01:05 the bottom of the earth so yeah look it's I guess trying to find ways to put
01:09 pressure back on their bowlers and keep building partnerships and and try and
01:12 set a foundation so that we can try and go harder towards the end and yeah
01:17 look I think all in all we're really proud of the efforts that we did yeah
01:20 there's some things we want to do better but I think it's going to bowl for the
01:23 rest of the tournament.
01:24 And last one from me, you come up against a side which you know you pick up Rohit
01:29 Sharma, you pick up Shubhman Gill, then there's somebody called Virat Kohli
01:33 who's just stands there and and it's immovable. I know you'll spend a bit of
01:39 time planning and stuff like that and but what are the discussions when he's
01:43 going and you know just making batting look so easy?
01:46 He's a world-class player and he'll go down as one of one of the greats of the
01:50 game for a reason. Yeah a very good knock under pressure I thought and and
01:54 although he didn't get a hundred he got his team across the line but yeah look
01:58 for us as Kiwis we'll just keep keep throwing punches we'll keep trying to
02:01 try different things and we'll keep trying to take wickets and and I'm just
02:05 really proud of our bowling unit tonight and how they tried to do that for
02:08 periods of time and in conditions which probably got better with the dew with
02:11 the wicket so yeah for us really proud of our efforts and and we look forward
02:15 to taking on the Aussies in just under a week's time.
02:19 Darryl, can you talk us a little bit through a little bit of your battle with
02:25 Kuldeep Yadav obviously took him down a little bit early but he came back and
02:30 bowled really well to the back end of his spell can you tell us what he was
02:32 doing and kind of what your process was of playing him?
02:36 Oh yeah look I've known Kuldeep for a while now he's a great man and we get on
02:41 well off the field and yeah for me it's just keep trying to find ways to put
02:44 pressure on their bowlers it's not just him it's the same with every bowler
02:47 that we come up against it's trying to find ways to put pressure on them and
02:50 and also absorb when they're bowling really well and and keep trying to I
02:53 guess tick over and build that platform that we speak about so yeah look he's
02:57 done really well over the last few years for India and it's awesome to see him
03:00 have some success.
03:03 Yeah I wanted to ask I think as the game progressed the pitch got better right do
03:12 you think the total was enough and if the total was enough do you think you
03:16 need to work on the fifth bowling option? I think I answered that question pretty
03:21 much before and yeah look you obviously always want more runs but at the same
03:25 time I thought the platform that we said and and the way we we wanted to go about
03:28 it was yeah in true Blackcaps style so for us yeah we'll just keep chipping
03:33 away and and we'll work on a few things and we're good to go next time.
03:37 Darryl, very early on in the innings you were very comfortable stepping out to
03:44 Kuldeep so were you like kind of assured that you are reading him well from the
03:48 hand because you know wrist spinners stepping out it could be a 50/50
03:51 proposition there in the middle so how well were you reading him off the hand
03:54 and did it kind of assure you to kind of just step out as early as you did to him?
03:59 Look I guess when you're playing anyone that's it's about again trying to find
04:04 ways to put pressure on them as well as accept that at times they're gonna bowl
04:08 well and you come in with plans and you come up with ways you want to play
04:10 different guys and and for me today that was obviously an option that worked
04:13 doesn't mean I'll do it next time but yeah look it's just constantly trying to
04:18 find ways to score runs and keep putting us in positions to win games of cricket.
04:24 This is a beautiful place to play cricket you can only look up at the
04:42 mountains and it looks amazing and for us we've got standards within our
04:46 black caps that you commit and you do everything you can to help us win games
04:49 of cricket and part of that is diving on the boundary and stopping the ball when
04:52 you when you get the chance and that's something we're proud of ourselves on as
04:56 black caps and we'll continue to do it no matter where we play in the world.
05:00 What was it like you know when you were in the middle and the fog and the
05:05 mist stopped play have you experienced it before and what were the challenges
05:09 where there's a feeler and a batter were you able to see the ball how was it?
05:13 Look it was strange wasn't it I have experienced it before in first-class
05:16 cricket in Kauri Park in Wellington when the fog came in so yeah it's it's it's
05:20 this game continues to provide wonderful things doesn't it and it was an amazing
05:25 experience that's for sure.
05:26 There were a couple of drop catches by the Indians that you were dropped twice
05:34 were you surprised to see them slip up on the field?
05:37 It's the nature of the game people are going to drop catches at times as long as
05:41 everyone's given their all and doing their best then that's all you can ask
05:44 I think it's just part of the game that we've signed up for.
