00:00 and his crew here. They are prepping the area around the pond to put in the
00:03 flagstone walkways and the flagstone patio. So if we take a look here they've
00:08 already kind of mapped out sort of the area where it's going to be so they can
00:13 start digging it out. So it starts here at the driveway it's gonna curve around
00:17 the bottom of this berm and we're gonna kind of cut into this berm and possibly
00:22 do a little retaining wall right here and then it's gonna come up there'll be
00:26 a couple of stairs leading down to this patio area right here and the
00:31 flagstones will come all the way over the front of these blocks so you won't
00:36 see these blocks anymore and then the walkway will take off and go this way
00:39 right there. Sorry if it's really loud I'm trying to stay out of their way but
00:43 you guys we do have cameras up we're gonna try to capture as much of this
00:46 process as we can. So while they're working on that let's go plant.
00:54 I wanted to stop here in the shade of our mulberry tree this is such a really
00:58 pretty area I love this whole flowerbed looks right now and I know we just
01:02 showed this to you and kind of an update tour but oh my goodness the color it's
01:07 just so fun. But these are the shrubs we're working with today so this one
01:11 right here I have a lot of experience with this is the proudberry coral berry
01:15 so right now like it doesn't have a tremendous amount of interest on it
01:19 except for I love the color of the leaves they're kind of that sagey blue
01:24 green they're so pretty and they're a little bit on the smaller side so
01:27 they've got you know they don't create like a really heavy weight in a
01:32 flowerbed they're kind of more of an accent shrub and then they come out with
01:36 these big panicles of you can kind of see some of the blooms still left. They're
01:40 the lightest of pink little tiny dainty things but that's not even what's
01:44 awesome about this shrub what's awesome about it is that all of those flowers
01:48 then turn into beautiful pink berries. We've got several of these around the
01:53 garden and I think it would be gorgeous to do a hedge of these somewhere. There's
01:56 surely an area we could dedicate to a coral berry hedge I think that would be
02:00 so pretty. These are just an amazingly tough shrub and the thing I love about
02:05 these not only the berries which do hold for a good part of like into the winter
02:09 eventually they do kind of brown and fall off but you don't really notice it
02:13 it's in the middle of winter when you're not walking by your flower beds all the
02:15 time but I love the maintenance on these. So you they I mean they're a woody shrub
02:20 but you go in in the spring and you cut the whole dang thing down to about 12
02:24 inches it feels wrong when you're doing it you feel like oh my goodness this is
02:28 not how you're supposed to treat shrubs but it's what they want. They need to
02:32 have that hard prune back and they flush back beautifully and get like three to
02:35 four feet I want to say tall and wide every year yeah three to four feet tall
02:40 and wide and they are a zone three through seven. They handle our high pH
02:44 soil really well thus far I mean I've been growing them for years now but
02:48 they're a fun one to work into flower arrangements and things like that I just
02:51 there's not a bad thing I can say about this plant at all.
02:56 I have to take a break every time the tractor needs to go by. So as they're
03:01 digging it out and I think Paul's helping with that as they dig it out they
03:04 put all the soil in the bucket of the tractor and then truck it over to the
03:08 big hole that we have that was dug to create the berms over in that area it's
03:12 working out really nicely. But this is our next shrub right here this is the
03:16 double play Dolly Spirea a brand new one for next year. The thing I like about
03:20 this one is that it stays fairly small like one and a half to two and a half
03:23 feet tall and wide. It also provides that bright chartreuse pop in a flower bed
03:29 which honestly brings kind of a cooling note to it in the middle of summer but
03:33 when this one emerges the new leaves you can kind of see right here but in this
03:37 spring they're like orange red they have autumn colors in the spring and then
03:41 they mature to this brighter chartreuse color and then they start to bloom about
03:46 now. And it says they have purple blooms that's pink to me that's just a dark
03:49 pink maybe on the purple side of pink. But these are tough zone three through
03:53 eight they bloom on new wood so they're just a really great one for reliable
03:57 color. I'm gonna take another break quick here comes the tractor with an empty
04:01 bucket. He always stops a little shy of where I'm at and waits for the thumbs up
04:05 like I'm not in the middle of talking. Now the last one this is a rugosa rose
04:10 which you can tell by the way the leaves are structured and how the leaves look
04:14 the leaves are smaller than a traditional rose but these stay small
04:18 most rugosa's that I'm familiar with get huge. Not that I'm a rose expert by any
04:23 stretch of the imagination but the rugosa's that we used to sell down at
04:27 the garden center or probably still do sell are on the larger side. The cool
04:30 thing about this one is it stays three by three so an easy one to tuck into the
04:35 landscape and then you get that that rugosa look which I love and these
04:38 blooms are gorgeous. Just look at this super sweet perfectly pink full cupped
04:44 dainty little rose. I mean they do open a little bit wider and lighten up in
04:48 color and there is another variety same series it's the seaside swirl to rugosa
04:53 but it's a little bit of a deeper pink we do have those I haven't planted them
04:55 yet so we will find a spot for those as well but I just think that this is such
04:59 a sweet color and I do have to say we let these dry out once on accident. I
05:04 mean completely dry zero leaps they all dried up and fell off and I thought oh
05:09 for crying out loud no I love that rose I hope they live so we kept watering them
05:13 and they bounced back fast so they are a tough one for sure. So this is our
05:19 project for the day let's get out and get them in the ground. After I changed
05:22 my shoes I'm still wearing sandals I gotta go get some closed toed shoes on.

07:02 Oh you guys, I just love where all of these plants are.
07:08 All of them ended up out here
07:10 in this part of the South Garden
07:11 and every little thing that we add,
07:13 it just feels like it's starting to come together.
07:16 We'll start with the last ones I planted,
07:18 which were the spirea right here.
07:19 And because they're so small,
07:20 I can just tuck them in almost like a perennial.
07:23 I'm gonna do something just a little bit shorter
07:24 right in front of them,
07:25 but there'll be a nice bright pop
07:27 and you can kind of see how the layering is going.
07:29 I usually, since this is a no plan sort of space,
07:32 I usually start with some bigger stuff.
07:34 Oh, the light's going away for just a second.
07:37 Anyway, start with bigger stuff
07:39 and then start working my way down typically.
07:42 So these are just a really nice color right in here
07:44 because we've got the cedar.
07:46 This is the Korean cedar and then there's a Serbian spruce.
07:49 There's Russian sage, there's roses.
07:51 There is a back and black sedum.
07:53 So we've got a lot of green and red and blue,
07:56 but we didn't have any chartreuse over here
07:58 and they just pop, don't they?
08:00 And if I keep going backwards,
08:02 you can see how much space we still have to fill.
08:04 We do have this drift of roses,
08:06 which are hanging in there.
08:07 Not looking great,
08:08 but I think next year they'll look amazing.
08:10 One thing I wanted,
08:11 well, actually two things I wanted to show you.
08:13 First of all, double twilight super bells.
08:15 Amazing ground cover annual.
08:17 Super bells usually aren't recommended for in-ground spaces
08:20 because they need such good drainage to thrive.
08:24 But these must like this spot because they look great.
08:28 Second thing, fall in love sweetly anemones.
08:31 Now anemones traditionally,
08:33 at least in our area where it's pretty harsh
08:35 in the summertime,
08:37 we don't get many days of cloud cover
08:38 and can get pretty hot.
08:39 We usually have to place anemones
08:41 in a at least part shade location.
08:44 These are on normal days in full sun all day long.
08:48 Last year was when we planted them
08:49 and they did struggle a bit to get established.
08:51 But this year we have had a little bit of an atypical summer
08:55 hasn't been quite as harsh.
08:57 So maybe that's why they look so great,
08:59 but they look great.
09:00 I love them.
09:01 Oh my gosh, they just started to bloom.
09:03 I love it when you're experimenting with something
09:05 and it just, you find the right spot from the gate.
09:08 Sometimes it can be frustrating
09:09 if you have to keep on trying.
09:10 Right in here is where the coral berries ended up.
09:13 I went ahead and grabbed the fourth one.
09:15 I had four on hand.
09:16 We wintered these over from last year
09:17 and I was just gonna plant three.
09:19 And I thought, well, it's kind of perfect.
09:21 This can be our little kind of lazy hedge.
09:23 It's kind of like a little swoop thing.
09:25 We've got a Miss Ruby Buddleia here
09:26 and these are Echinacea we started from seed,
09:29 which I don't know.
09:31 A different variety of seed
09:32 must've got tucked in with these,
09:34 but they look beautiful.
09:35 We've got a rose back in there.
09:38 There's some phlox, one, I say some, I mean one.
09:41 There's also some standby myclematis,
09:42 which needs help standing.
09:44 I don't have anything around it supporting it.
09:46 And honestly, I could come in
09:48 and prune all of these flopped down branches.
09:50 Maybe I'll do that real quick.
09:51 But either way, we still need to plant a few things
09:55 around in here to make it nice and full.
09:57 But having these shrubs tucked in back here
09:59 will be beautiful.
10:00 We've got the, are these quick fire tidbit?
10:02 Is that the right name?
10:04 They stay real small.
10:06 I had five in here.
10:07 And remember, I accidentally dug one up this spring
10:09 and replanted it.
10:10 I didn't accidentally dig it up.
10:11 I dug it up on purpose 'cause I thought it was dead.
10:14 And when I got it up out of the ground,
10:15 there was actually some little buds down low,
10:17 but you can see it never, never did much after that.
10:21 So once I can get a fifth one,
10:23 I'll probably finish this drift right here.
10:25 I think that will look nice,
10:26 but we've got some Cheyenne sky panicum.
10:29 There's a pine right here.
10:31 Is that a Fukazumi, maybe?
10:33 Let's cut these back quick
10:34 before we go take a look at the roses.
10:36 (leaves rustling)
10:39 (leaves rustling)
10:42 (leaves rustling)
10:45 (leaves rustling)
11:13 Well, I kind of got into it and thought
11:16 there's no looking back at this point.
11:17 You know, if I would have looked at them a little harder,
11:19 I would have realized that there wasn't fresh growth,
11:21 like upright growth like this on all of them.
11:24 And I probably would have just left them
11:25 for the rest of the season,
11:26 just to enjoy the spent seed heads
11:28 because they are pretty as well.
11:30 But we do have a couple of months left.
11:32 So they'll probably flush back a nice leaf canopy
11:34 and they'll look a little bit more fresh.
11:36 I almost forgot to show you when I was over here.
11:38 This is a coral berry that's been here for a few years,
11:41 probably two or three years.
11:43 And this one gets cut back to 12 inches every single year.
11:47 And it just, you can see one berry's popped out,
11:49 a little pink berry,
11:50 but you can see just how many this shrub is gonna have.
11:53 It's gonna be another glorious show.
11:56 They never disappoint.
11:57 Okay, roses are on the other side.
11:59 Okay, so in this space right here, the three roses,
12:06 and I love it, especially on this approach right here,
12:09 just seeing the layering start to form up.
12:12 When we first start to plant perennials,
12:14 they always look like little, you know,
12:15 boop, boop, boop, boop all over the place.
12:17 But eventually these will just be a nice big thick drift
12:20 where you won't really be able to distinguish
12:23 one plant from the next,
12:24 unless it's, you know, like a grass like this.
12:26 We do have a centaura double blue lilac right here
12:29 and these just tucked in beautifully.
12:31 I'm actually thinking some sort of a pathway,
12:34 maybe somewhere around in here coming in through this area,
12:38 but we haven't quite decided that yet,
12:41 but it's kind of nice to leave that open for now
12:42 while we're thinking about it.
12:45 Boy, the asters are looking pretty
12:46 and the reminiscent coral.
12:49 Look at those, beautiful.
12:53 That coral with the aster behind it, oh, so pretty.
12:57 Love seeing that color and this color.
13:00 My word.
13:01 Well, that's pretty much it for my planting.
13:04 Let's go see how the guys have done today.
13:06 (tree branches cracking)
13:09 (tree branches cracking)
13:13 (tree branches cracking)
13:16 (truck beeping)
13:21 (truck engine roaring)
13:25 (truck engine roaring)
13:40 (truck engine roaring)
13:43 (truck engine roaring)
14:02 (truck engine roaring)
14:05 (tree branches cracking)
14:26 (tree branches cracking)
14:29 (truck engine roaring)
14:53 (tree branches cracking)
14:57 (truck engine roaring)
15:04 (truck engine roaring)
15:13 (truck engine roaring)
15:17 Oh my goodness, you guys, look at the stones.
15:41 They are so pretty and they're big.
15:44 Look at how big these pieces are.
15:46 Wow.
15:48 And the walkway, the beginning of the walkway,
15:52 I can see some distinction now.
15:55 That's so nice.
15:56 It looks like they got this side dug out
15:59 and the gravel layer put in and tamped down.
16:02 Looks like the patio area,
16:04 oh, we're gonna get some sun again.
16:06 Patio area dug out, the gravel layer put in.
16:09 Looks like they were kind of testing out some stones
16:12 because I don't want the edge to look cut.
16:15 I want it to be fairly smooth, but not cut smooth,
16:18 if that makes sense,
16:18 because there's so much natural stuff going on around here.
16:21 I want this to just still be sort of a natural looking edge.
16:25 And Pedro said they were gonna start laying stone
16:27 in this area tomorrow.
16:29 So I'm thinking they're gonna get this walkway done
16:31 and then into the patio area,
16:33 and then they'll start digging out the next pathway.
16:35 So right in here is where the stairs are gonna go,
16:37 which the slabs are sitting over there.
16:39 We'll walk over there in a second.
16:41 But Aaron asked if they could put some conduit in.
16:43 You know, he's the king of planning ahead.
16:45 We have no plans right at this moment to use that,
16:47 but should we want to put,
16:49 there's some fire bowls out there that you can use gas for.
16:51 And there's also, you know,
16:53 if we need electrical for something,
16:55 at least it'll be there
16:56 so we don't have to tear up the whole patio,
16:58 and then we won't have to run a cord
17:00 or pipes or anything anywhere.
17:01 So above the surface.
17:03 I can't tell you how many times I've been thankful
17:05 for his forethought in that area.
17:07 On this side, I don't know.
17:08 Like right now it's looking like three stairs,
17:10 but I was thinking initially two,
17:12 but we'll see how it goes once they get this whole heap,
17:15 you know, put back over into the trench.
17:18 But the pathway, they kind of had it marked out.
17:21 It came right about where this pile is
17:24 and just hugs around the bottom of this berm.
17:28 Kind of see all the mulch scooted out of the way.
17:31 And then you can see these stairs
17:37 that match the flagstone we're using.
17:39 Aren't those awesome?
17:41 So they're three feet wide,
17:43 and I think six inches, six or seven, roughly, inches high.
17:47 Wonder how much each one of these weighs.
17:50 But the stone we're using is a little bit different
17:52 than all of our other flagstone walkways.
17:54 We've been trying to use the same thing
17:56 all over the property,
17:57 but this one's incredibly similar.
18:00 So the one we've been using, it's called Oklahoma Blue,
18:03 and it does have quite a bit of orange in it,
18:05 which you guys know I don't really care
18:07 for the orange color in the stone quite as much,
18:09 mostly on the edges.
18:10 Like you would see a bright orange edge
18:12 on the Oklahoma Blue.
18:14 This type of stone is called Tomaha,
18:17 which is from a quarry that's really close
18:19 to the other stone, but it has far less orange,
18:22 just more grays, which I really like.
18:25 I did see one stone that had some orange in it.
18:28 Yeah, see like this right here,
18:29 the Oklahoma Blue had a ton of that in it,
18:32 which in walkway situations, I don't mind
18:34 because you're not really seeing the sides of the stone.
18:37 But when you're using it for any kind of walls,
18:39 or if you're seeing the edges and I can see that orange,
18:41 I just don't personally care for that quite as much.
18:44 I like cooler tones so that it kind of visually cools
18:46 down the area.
18:47 So I'm really happy with this stone, it's so pretty.
18:50 Oh, I just love it.
18:51 I love seeing it like this.
18:54 And that's just day one.
18:55 They got a tremendous amount done.
18:57 That was a ton of soil they had to move out.
18:59 Wow.
19:01 So that is day one for the flagstones out here,
19:04 and we will bring you along for the rest of the project.
19:06 So you can kind of see it happen as we see it happen.
19:09 And once that's done, I think I'll really get a new,
19:12 not a new feel for this area, but kind of, you know,
19:15 when you have hardscape stuff like that done,
19:18 it just kind of, it lets you see what it's gonna look like
19:21 from here on out.
19:22 And you can start really envisioning,
19:24 it helps me envision where plants are gonna go,
19:26 and I'm gonna really wanna go to town.
19:28 I just know it.
19:29 So anyway, guys, that's it for today.
19:31 Thank you so much for watching this video.
19:32 I hope you enjoyed it and we will see you in the next one.
