Poland's president starts talks to form a coalition, but who's in pole position?

With no party winning an overall majority in a poll that saw a record turnout, the shape of the next government could come down to negotiatons.

00:00 In the Polish elections, everyone declared victory. The ruling Law and Justice Party
00:06 or PIS won the most seats. But a coalition of three more liberal parties says only it
00:12 can form a majority. First, the president must meet the parties.
00:17 We have the issue of the president, who has been supported by our party. There are many
00:27 solutions that the opposition promises to veto. The opposition has no possibility of
00:34 rejecting the presidential veto. The president should take all this into account.
00:41 I hope that after these talks, he will trust us with the creation of a government.
00:46 We are the largest party that won the elections. We cannot be deprived of the possibility
00:51 of creating a government. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's not impossible.
00:57 Opposition coalition leaders are trying to persuade the president not to give priority
01:01 to forming a government to the party that won the most votes, but to the parties that
01:05 are now demonstrating a parliamentary majority.
01:08 A new coalition of three parties will be formed, the Third Way, the Civic Coalition
01:14 and the New Left. This will be a good proposition for Poles. It will be the answer to the
01:19 voters' demands from October 15, who clearly said that they want changes in Poland.
01:24 The creation of a new government and the president's next steps should take into account the will of Poles.
01:30 The most likely scenario is that President Duda's own political sympathies may sway
01:35 the appointment of the next prime minister when parliament meets next month.
01:39 This prime minister will most likely be Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Now, he will
01:45 not be able to form a government because despite coming in first and gaining the greatest
01:52 number of seats, PIS will not be able to have a majority. In a next step, parliamentarians
01:59 from this new parliament will be able to appoint an alternative prime minister, and that will
02:04 most likely be Donald Tusk, who will lead the new coalition. And the transfer of power
02:11 and the appointment of a new government will happen in December.
02:17 During two days of consultations with representatives of political formations, the Polish president
02:22 will ask each of them whether they see a chance of obtaining a parliamentary majority.
02:28 Although for many the answer seems to be clear, politicians do not want to lose hope until the end.
