00:00 Welcome back to another episode of Getting the Upper Land, where you get a rundown of
00:15 some of our top stories.
00:16 I'm livestock editor Rebecca Naj, and with senior journalist Dennis Howard on leave,
00:21 I've had to sub in my good mate Cruz, who wanted to contribute but is a little hoarse.
00:27 Breaking news this week, the National Farmers Federation has launched a campaign against
00:31 anti-farming policies by the Albanese government.
00:35 It comes after a survey revealed falling confidence in the farming sector, and producers say policies
00:40 are being developed to win votes and not establish long-term beneficial outcomes.
00:46 The premise that spiders have been killing insects for 400 million years is behind the
00:51 development of an environmentally friendly insecticide for broadacre operations.
00:57 It's produced similarly to beer, and uses the venom from a funnel-web spider.
01:02 The bee industry is turning to genetic selection as a way to improve stocks.
01:07 Dubbed Plan B, the program was launched in 2019, and follows the livestock industry's
01:12 lead in selecting for genetic improvement.
01:16 And speaking of livestock, an unlikely hero is emerging as a way for producers to safeguard
01:22 their livelihood against wild dog attacks.
01:25 About 700 Guardian donkeys have made their way to homes across NSW, QLD and Victoria.
01:32 Keep an eye out too for what farmers plan to prioritise over the next 12 months, and
01:36 a move by processors into the landlord space in a bid to secure workers.
01:41 And lastly, I have a story in rural life about my drive from Mount Hope across to Pooncarie.
01:47 Now that stud stock sales are easing up, I'm hoping to get out exploring and write about
01:52 the experience.
