00:04 Isn't blood part of the circ...circu...
00:08 Circulatory system?
00:10 Yeah, that one!
00:12 [Music]
00:15 The circulatory system is an organ system that moves nutrients, gases and wastes to and from cells.
00:22 The circulatory system is also called the cardiovascular system.
00:28 It includes the heart, the blood and blood vessels.
00:32 Blood is the fluid that circulates around the body,
00:35 bringing to your cells the nutrients and gases your body needs.
00:40 Blood also gets rid of the waste your cells produce.
00:43 Wow, blood is pretty important!
00:46 But wait, there's more!
00:48 Some cells in the blood help fight diseases,
00:50 and the circulating blood also helps maintain your body temperature.
00:55 The heart is the main engine of the circulatory system.
00:59 It's a large muscle made of four different chambers,
01:03 two on the right and two on the left.
01:06 The right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood into the lungs,
01:11 so that carbon dioxide can be dropped off and oxygen can be picked up.
01:16 The left side of the heart pumps the oxygenated blood all the way to the rest of the body.
01:22 That's why the left side of the heart is bigger than the right.
01:27 It has to work harder.
01:29 Are there any other parts of the circulatory system?
01:32 I'm glad you asked.
01:33 The arteries and veins are tube-like vessels.
01:37 Arteries take blood from the heart, and veins bring blood back to the heart.
01:43 And each time the blood circulates from the heart out to the body,
01:47 about 20% of it goes through the kidneys.
01:51 The kidneys filter out some of the waste before the blood heads back to the heart.
01:56 The kidneys are actually part of the urinary system.
