00:05 >> It seemed like you guys got something going for the end, tempo.
00:11 What is it about that clears things up?
00:16 >> I think it bought a little energy to us, kinda got some things going.
00:19 I think that, and you go back to that game, you watch it,
00:24 and we sustained some drives, but we couldn't finish them.
00:28 And really, obviously, that third down, clearly wasn't good enough.
00:32 But I think that it was a point of the game where it was like,
00:36 hey, we gotta get going.
00:38 And I thought the players responded well.
00:41 And I thought that as you look at it, it's not something you can live in, but
00:45 there's times probably where we'll wanna use that.
00:48 >> That is something that you can incorporate earlier in the game,
00:52 even if it's just for- >> Yeah, I think that-
00:54 >> Serious attitude to get you going.
00:54 >> Yeah, I think that, again, obviously, it went well for that game.
01:00 And I think you have to look at who's your opponent, what are they doing?
01:03 But I think that, again, as we game plan, if there's some weeks where we feel like,
01:07 hey, whatever, hey, let's go, what do you call it, up tempo,
01:12 or whatever you wanna call it, and then just being smart when we go.
01:17 >> Yeah.
01:20 >> You mentioned that there are some new things that you've tried to implement
01:24 over the course of this week, just from a confidence standpoint for you and
01:28 the offense, what's the impact of that?
01:30 >> Well, I think there was a lot of communication,
01:32 a lot of discussion among individuals.
01:35 And just kinda trying to make sure that we're clear with each other,
01:39 everybody's on the same page.
01:40 I think it's been a great week, a lot of energy, guys are preparing.
01:47 I think that just more so just a lot of discussion and saying, hey,
01:51 what are some of the things that we gotta do to keep some of these things from happening?
01:56 >> You've alluded before to the idea of typical simplify things like that,
01:59 is that something that y'all have undergone?
02:01 >> Yeah, I think that that's always part of it.
02:05 You look at, hey, start out with the coach, what are we doing?
02:08 Are we doing too much and is that causing issues?
02:12 And then why wasn't a play executed or
02:15 why was there possibly miscommunication and things like that?
02:19 But I think that the discussion has been real helpful this week.
02:22 >> Is that also kind of a byproduct of going up tempo, you simplify things?
02:26 I think Derek referred to it as the training camp play as opposed to-
02:29 >> I think basically when you're getting
02:30 into those types of situations, a lot of time it's your core.
02:34 Things that you're picking from a menu, maybe potentially based on what
02:38 the defense is, but there's a set menu throughout training camp.
02:42 >> You talk about from the coaching standpoint of you said doing too much or
02:46 something along those lines.
02:47 Is there a simple example of that?
02:49 What does that mean?
02:50 >> Well, I think that you can look at your, let's just take the third down.
02:53 Do we have too many plays in and then guys are having to think so much.
02:59 Like, hey, what am I doing on this play?
03:00 What's my split?
03:02 So simplifying whether it's number of calls, maybe the,
03:06 I mean, there could be a lot of things.
03:08 Like, hey, yeah, is it the splits that are varying?
03:11 Is it maybe a ton of motion, shit, all that stuff?
03:14 I think a lot of that stuff can be simplified.
03:15 >> When you say number of calls,
03:17 is that the number of calls going into the huddle or
03:18 is that just kind of like the overall menu of that situation?
03:20 >> I'm talking about maybe like an overall list when you're looking at a particular
03:23 section of let's just say, hey, you're looking at your drop back list or
03:26 you're looking at your play action list.
03:28 Well, do we need this many on the list?
03:30 Let's narrow it down to this many and
03:32 make sure it's the ones that our guys like and well for that game.
03:35 >> Hey, what do you wanna get Derek Carr into that takes advantage of the best
03:42 that he's done and the best of his skills?
03:45 What do you need to find with him that gets him in the rhythm?
03:47 >> I think that, well, obviously, that Temple's done some things that he did well,
03:51 but I think that those opportunities for him at the line of scrimmage to maybe
03:55 see the coverage, recognize the coverage, and be able to get us in a play that's
04:00 [SOUND] good about based on maybe the defense you're seeing.
04:05 >> And when we've seen communication issues or not, I don't know if
04:08 communication is even the right word, but the quarterback and
04:10 the receiver being on different pages is a lot of that from calls being made at
04:15 the line of scrimmage or that's not?
04:16 >> I think there could be a variety of things.
04:18 And again, I think it starts with us as coaches making sure that those things
04:23 aren't happening, if there's gonna be some things that come up in the game,
04:26 making sure that's all going into the game.
04:29 Those are things that we've practiced and repped, and
04:32 maybe not just all of a sudden appear on game day.
04:34 >> So the two aren't sort of mutually exclusive, and
04:37 he can have get us into this or this at the line of scrimmage, and
04:41 it's not necessarily the same as changing what they're all being asked to do on
04:45 the play.
04:46 >> Yeah, correct.
04:46 So I think that some part of the discussions as we can, again,
04:49 is starting with what are we doing and then making sure that we're
04:53 all on the same page, communication and some of it's execution assignment as well.
04:59 So I think that all goes into it.
05:01 >> And this is probably oversimplifying, but
05:03 Taysom caught a lot of balls in the middle of the field.
05:05 But just in general, Michael Thomas slams Jimmy Graham, period.
05:10 Is it sort of defenses that are taking away the middle of the field, or
05:14 is that something that you guys wish you were doing more?
05:16 >> Well, I think when we go into the game, obviously,
05:19 we look at those opportunities and those things.
05:21 And obviously, when we talk about someone like Jimmy,
05:24 obviously he's been a part of the game plans.
05:27 And then just maybe some of those plays aren't getting called, and
05:30 that can come back to me and
05:33 making sure that those opportunities are given to him.
05:35 So I think, and there's a lot of guys that we wanna get the ball to.
05:40 We like it in their hands.
05:41 But again, I think as you go into a game plan, if there's something for
05:46 Mike Thomas or Jimmy that you like, it's all in the game plan.
05:48 It's just a matter of sometimes getting it.
05:50 >> What's the kind of bridge for that factor in?
05:53 >> Yeah, I think that we're excited to have him back out of practice.
05:55 And I think that he brings an element to the pass game vertically that we like.
06:03 I think that he does a number of things, though, as far as routes.
06:06 And then again, I always feel like his run game block has been underestimated a little
06:10 bit or not talked about as much.
06:11 But I think that we'll see where he's at for Sunday.
06:14 But I think that he brings an element of the passing game that we feel really
06:18 good about.
06:19 >> Thank you. >> Thank you.
