Spooky season enthusiasts are encouraged to shop local and secondhand this Halloween.
Transcript
00:00 October 31 is no longer just the end of another month.
00:03 Australians have embraced Halloween more and more over the past decade.
00:07 Rather than add to Ballarat's landfill, a more sustainable option for costumes is heading to your neighbourhood op shop.
00:13 Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative op shop manager Stacey Gaffer has put together some costumes ahead of the spooky season.
00:20 We have got heaps and heaps more people, especially towards special events like Halloween,
00:25 that come in looking for specific things and we are able to then suggest to them some alternative ideas.
00:32 The money that we raise from the op shop all goes back into supporting unfunded programs
00:37 and they range all through Ballarat services, all the way from maternal child health through to mental health and even the kinders, so we're very lucky.
00:53 We've been very lucky that we've had a great donation of rather expensive formal wear.
00:59 We're keeping that aside and we're going to offer that out to our younger community
01:05 and give them the option to wear a really nice dress for a special event, whether it be wedding, graduation.
01:09 That's really something unique and special that we can offer now.
