Most of the plastic surgery advertisements on social media are put up by unlicensed parties, cosmetic surgeons have warned.
At a press conference organised by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong on Friday (Oct 27), Malaysian Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons (Mapacs) president Dr Regunathan Villanayer said the number of botched surgeries by unlicensed surgeons was alarming, and reminded the public not to be lured by cheap fees on the advertisements.

00:00 Over the last 18 months, our members have reported more than 126 procedure complications
00:16 which has been treated by them.
00:18 And the main issues include disfigurement or deformities, infections, sinuses, discharge,
00:30 extrusion of implants - implants are materials which are inserted under the skin - and there
00:36 has been a few deaths.
00:40 All these procedures have been done by unauthorised practitioners and non-doctors.
00:45 And I believe that there are many more people affected by this who have not come forward
00:52 for treatment or who have asked so that their treatment can be done in confidentiality.
00:59 Due to this sudden, rampant increase in the number of cases, some people call it post-COVID
01:05 revenge operations or revenge procedures.
01:09 We feel that it is our duty to inform, educate or more to empower the public.
01:15 The best way to proceed if they wish to pursue an aesthetic procedure or beauty procedure
01:20 is to be aware of red flags.
01:24 So the red flags I would like to mention are if these procedures are being done in unregistered
01:32 premises, this is a red flag.
01:35 If the practitioner's name is not displayed, you don't know who is doing this, it is a
01:39 red flag.
01:40 You have to be careful.
01:41 If you think that sterility is improper, then you have to be careful.
01:46 Products are not specified, this is another red flag.
01:49 They are not telling you what they are putting under your skin.
01:52 If you are doing a procedure, you must know what is being inserted.
01:57 It must be medical grade substance which goes under your skin.
02:01 A procedure which is very cheap, discounted cost, you have to be careful.
02:09 Most medical procedures, all our members have to go through a fee schedule for charging.
02:17 So if a certain procedure is done, the fee is fixed, there is a fee schedule.
02:24 It is not possible to bring that down or up very much.
02:28 It is very easy to check if your doctor is authorised to do invasive procedures.
02:33 All plastic surgeons are specialists, they are registered under the National Specialist
02:39 Register by the Malaysian Medical Council.
02:43 So there is a website, NSR, National Specialist Register website.
02:48 If you go and key in the doctor's name, it will come out with a registration number.
02:52 If it doesn't come out, this doctor is not a specialist.
02:56 The Medical Practice Division of Ministry of Health, Kementerian Kesehatan Malaysia,
03:04 also has an Instagram page.
03:06 In this page, you can place queries, you can put complaints, you can also verify whether
03:12 a certain person is an authorised person to do the procedure.
03:17 You can even ask whether this place of practice is the correct place.
03:23 We have received many cases, last year to now, actually, but just coming to see us,
03:32 we got about 10 cases just coming to see us.
03:38 We also entertain a lot on the phone call, where the victims are too shy to come and
03:45 see us.
03:46 So as I say, whoever come and see me, whoever what, either we have to refer them to our
03:53 specialists, or they come for legal advice.
03:58 So what we are telling today, the press conference today, is that please, please, I beg you all,
04:07 to not simply respond to all these advertisements, where you are seeing the online, all these
04:13 things, Facebook and all.
04:17 Please.
04:18 You want to be beautiful, you can be beautiful, but go to the right doctors, right person.
04:28 Thank you.
04:29 Thank you.
04:29 Thank you.
