00:00 In Brazil, hundreds of delegates took part in the country's 7th National Congress of the Popular Movement Central.

00:05 Our correspondent, Maya Mir, has the details in the following report.

00:09 Over 500 delegates from 21 states and dozens of guest speakers are in Salvador Bahia

00:16 for the 7th National Congress of the CMP, or Popular Movement Central,

00:21 one of Brazil's most important social movements.

00:24 One of the highlights has been a debate on fighting fascism.

00:29 Participatory democracy is when we build people's power inside the democratic process.

00:35 This is a central element in the fight against fascism

00:42 because it was very important to defeat Bolsonaro electorally,

00:46 but today Bolsonaro is the expression of a right-wing extremist mass political movement

00:52 that does not just confront us in the center of national congress,

00:57 it confronts us in our own neighborhoods.

01:00 A recent study produced by São Paulo Federal University

01:05 shows that 20% of Brazil's population still identifies as hardcore followers of Bolsonarismo

01:11 and classifies them as having fascist sympathies.

01:14 The delegates at the CMP congress engaged in spirited debate on how to counter this force in society.

01:23 We are reaffirming our commitment to fighting fascism at the CMP congress.

01:29 We all should go back to our neighborhoods and occupy more territory that is free from hunger and free from misery.

01:35 We all women have the right to free schools for their children.

01:38 A recurring theme during the afternoon of debate was that, like the struggle for socialism,

01:47 the fight against fascism must be international.

01:50 We have to be careful because fascism is not just a little thing that freely operates inside capitalism.

01:57 It is a lot stronger than that.

01:59 It is much more active in the assassination of the working class.

02:04 To give you an example, it is the fascists who are maintaining the war in Ukraine

02:10 because 40% of Ukraine's army are fascists.

02:16 The CMP congress ends today with the election of a new National Directorate.
