England head coach Matthew Mott on their embarassing early Cricket World Cup exit after defeat to India
Transcript
00:00 Hi Matthew, I don't know how much time you've had to speak to the guys now but can you sort
00:06 of take us in and just tell us how painful it is at the moment losing all these games?
00:11 You know, I haven't had a chat to the boys yet.
00:14 Yeah, very painful I think.
00:17 We set out, we knew it was going to be hard work today, India on their home patch and
00:22 to be honest I was really pleased at the halfway mark.
00:24 I thought it was definitely our best bowling and fielding effort and we went out to bat
00:27 with a lot of positivity about it being a very achievable total.
00:34 There was a lot of dew out there as well so I thought, particularly after the start we
00:37 got none for 30 that we were well placed but any time you lose four for 10 you put yourself
00:43 under pressure and chase and it unravelled again from there unfortunately.
00:48 Yeah, that unravelling, when it happens it's been happening faster.
00:57 Are you sensing almost a fearfulness in the team that they can almost see the thing disappearing
01:03 from them as soon as the first setback happens?
01:06 Not really, I think when you've seen that happen a couple of times recently it does
01:12 affect the confidence no doubt.
01:16 When you're winning you can absorb a couple of wickets and seem to get through but tonight
01:20 as I said we had none for 30, I wasn't sure, we lost a little wicket there, I wasn't
01:27 sure about Joe's one, I was pretty clear on the technology, there was a little spike
01:32 there so I'm not sure why we didn't use that but then it happened bang bang and we
01:36 were under pressure and they bowled extremely well.
01:39 In their home conditions they did well and I think probably deserve a lot of credit the
01:43 way they managed through that dew as well.
01:45 I thought we tried to hold on and get some partnerships together but we just kept losing
01:50 a wicket every time we looked like getting a bit of a foundation so yeah, disappointing.
01:57 You guys have talked about recovering some pride, being hungry to get some of that pride
02:03 back, is that changing now with almost no chance of really improving things, is it almost
02:09 like it would be better to get home and draw a line under this one?
02:12 No, not at all, I think it's tough, I'm sick of coming up and speaking to you guys
02:18 about the same thing but that's what professional sport is and we've got to keep pushing hard
02:22 here, we've got a fair bit to play for to the back end of this tournament.
02:26 I think the way that we went out and fielded and bowled today showed the commitment of
02:29 the group and that's the main part of this, you've got to keep fronting up and commit,
02:34 throw yourself around in the field, I thought we were brilliant there and the first half
02:38 we did our job, the second half was one we'd rather forget and we've got to find a way,
02:44 there's some world class players in there that unfortunately aren't scoring the runs
02:47 that they're used to scoring.
02:48 And it looks like you're going to need to finish top eight to qualify for the Champions
02:53 Trophy, I know it's two years away or whatever but that's looking a bit of a stiff task
02:57 in itself now, that's got to be a concern.
03:00 Yeah I suppose to your point earlier, it gives us a lot of focus that we need to make sure
03:05 we can't just turn up, we've got to turn up and play and win those games and we're obviously
03:11 up against some good teams in those last few games as well so that's plenty of motivation
03:15 for us to pick ourselves back up off the canvas and keep trying to throw punches.
03:20 I don't know if you've seen but Owen Morgan said that given how badly the decisions have
03:28 been made have gone and how England have gone away from the white ball cricket, makes him
03:31 think that something is going on in the dressing room.
03:34 Is something going on?
03:35 No, not really, I don't think that at all.
03:38 I think anyone that's inside our tent at the moment would say that despite our results
03:44 we're an incredibly tight knit unit to the point where one of our, I said to the boys
03:50 the other day, Dave Humphries who's the former rugby international was flabbergasted just
03:55 how tight the unit was when he came in for a week to observe us given the results that
04:00 we've had.
04:01 So there's every opportunity when you're losing to splinter and go separate ways.
04:05 I can only say from my opinion the group's been incredibly strong in that part.
04:09 If you see our training sessions they're full of fun, people are putting their arm around
04:13 each other trying to help them and it's easy to do that when you're winning, it's a lot
04:18 harder when you're losing and I'm proud that we keep trying to get up.
04:26 Just to follow that up, it's great that everyone's having a great time but are you sure there's
04:30 nothing going on?
04:31 Owen's a pretty clued up guy, he's got ears in the dressing room, I find it quite hard
04:35 to believe that he'd be way off the mark with that.
04:38 Yeah, no, Owen's entitled to his opinion.
04:41 He's obviously been away for a couple of weeks for the birth of his child, he hasn't been
04:45 in and around the rooms but I'll certainly take that up with him and have a chat to him,
04:50 we've got a really good relationship with him so if he's seeing something that I'm not
04:53 I'll definitely have that conversation.
04:57 There were some positives today that we probably shouldn't lose sight of entirely.
05:02 Chris Wokes bowled really well, you were bowling him through seven overs at the start, it must
05:07 have been a really tough time for him, how has that been for him and how happy were you
05:14 with how he came back from that today?
05:17 I'm very happy for Wokes, he obviously didn't start the tournament the way he would have
05:22 liked but Joss in particular as captain likes to reward guys that have done well over a
05:29 long period of time.
05:30 I think the faith that he showed, he obviously missed the game and I think that was probably
05:35 timely for him just to work through some things in the nets, come back and since he's come
05:39 back I think he's been excellent.
05:42 Even bowling at the back end, that's an unfamiliar role for him and they were looking dangerous
05:48 there that they could just put it beyond 250 and I thought we did really well and Wokes
05:52 is a big part of that so definitely a positive.
05:55 I thought Dave Willey again was another one who has come into the side later in the tournament
06:00 and is always underestimated but always delivers.
06:03 So a little cameo at the end with the bat.
06:06 Look I think those guys were really good, I thought Rash bowled well as well and put
06:11 plenty of pressure on.
06:12 As I said there was no problems in the first half, I thought we were a bit in your hand
06:17 off at 2.30 with the conditions the way they were going to be tonight but unfortunately
06:23 we couldn't deliver.
06:24 When did you and the team learn what the qualification procedure was for the Champions Trophy?
06:42 About an hour and a half ago.
06:44 That seems incredible to come into a major global event not knowing what the qualification
06:49 for the next global event is doesn't it?
06:50 The ICC do change the rules quite a bit with qualification and to be honest I don't think
06:54 it would affect in any way the way we've played in this tournament so it's not a big deal.
07:06 How has it all come so undone for the team which is the defending champion?
07:18 Where have things gone wrong?
07:21 Have you really thrashed it out with the players and the team?
07:27 I suppose the latest thing has been our batting, the thing that's gone wrong.
07:31 There's no secret that we keep getting bowled out before we get our full allotment of 50
07:36 overs so that would be a big part of it.
07:39 I never really buy into the defending champions thing, I think everyone starts on the same
07:43 points and we knew we would have to play out of our skin to qualify for the top four here.
07:50 There's a lot of good teams here and a lot of teams that play really well in these conditions
07:53 so as a team coming over we started with a lot of optimism but it hasn't worked out and
08:00 as we mentioned before we've got a lot to still play for for the end of this tournament.
08:08 Just wondering your observations on Joss and how he's been handling what's probably
08:13 been the biggest challenge of his career and certainly his captaincy.
08:18 What's he been like in the dressing room?
08:20 I think he's been great to be honest.
08:22 I think Joss is an incredibly deep thinker about the game.
08:27 First and foremost I think he's just disappointed with his own form of the bat.
08:30 I think he felt like he came over here in really good form.
08:34 He usually leads from the front and scores a lot of runs so I think that's probably been
08:37 the hardest thing to deal with.
08:39 That dressing room is full of really good characters and guys with a lot of experience
08:42 and they've really helped a lot.
08:44 I think Mo and Ali, Ben Stokes, Johnny Besto, Joe Root, guys like that have played around
08:49 him a lot, have really tried to take the pressure off him but like all of us it's an incredibly
08:54 difficult period.
08:55 I think we won't forget this one for a long time.
09:00 But what you do in elite sport is you've got to learn when you hit the canvas and you keep
09:05 getting kicked while you're down, you store that away and you make sure you use that as
09:09 motivation to keep getting better and making sure it doesn't happen again and Joss is definitely
09:14 in that boat.
