Eleanor Marx est la fille cadette de Karl Marx. Comme son père, elle se bat pour des conquêtes sociales cruciales, telles que les droits des travailleurs, ceux des femmes mais également l'abolition du travail des enfants. En 1883, elle rencontre Edward Aveling, son futur mari, et part aux Etats-Unis pour continuer son combat. Aveling est un dramaturge talentueux, mais également un homme très égoïste, ce qui affecte énormément Eleanor au quotidien. Il entreprend de dilapider l'héritage laissé à la jeune femme par son défunt et célèbre père. Cet amour est néfaste pour Eleanor et la ronge complètement. Son dévouement pour lui l'anéantira...
