Digital Jokester Drew “Druski” Desbordes has turned his funny digital skits into a media empire. Over the last year, the comedian—who is also an actor—has been the opener for concerts by musicians J. Cole and Lil Baby, acted in TV series “House Party” and “Praise This,” and went on his own sold out comedy tour “Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda.”

00:02 - Hi everyone, I'm Rose Marie Miller
00:05 and we are backstage at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit.
00:10 And I have the pleasure of speaking
00:11 with this hilarious man over here,
00:14 the comedian, Drewski.
00:16 - Nice to meet you.
00:16 - Yes, nice to meet you.
00:18 And thank you for joining me today.
00:19 - Oh, you know, we here.
00:21 - You're here.
00:21 - Yes.
00:22 - Well, Drewski, can you tell me a little bit
00:24 about your background and your circumstances
00:27 when you started your journey?
00:29 - Yes, you know, just a kid from Gwinnett County, Georgia,
00:33 man, and I think just being a class clown early on,
00:37 that's what kind of grooved me in my career.
00:41 But sometimes, you know, when you're young,
00:42 you really don't know what your purpose is,
00:43 but thankfully I have good parenting, you know?
00:46 So yeah, no, we figured it out
00:49 in the midst of all the craziness,
00:51 but you know, they don't always support, you know,
00:53 you being a class clown while in school and being young,
00:57 but I had to figure it all out, you know,
00:59 later in life I came back to it and I was like,
01:01 all right, this is my purpose, you know?
01:03 - How did you navigate it at that time
01:05 for all the class clowns out there?
01:07 (laughing)
01:08 - Going through the failures, man,
01:09 you gotta tough it through,
01:10 and I think the biggest thing for me
01:13 was just trying a bunch of stuff out
01:15 and figuring out what you like,
01:17 but if you sit back and don't try stuff, you'll never know.
01:19 - Yeah. - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:20 - And you're saying the failures, what do you mean?
01:22 - Yeah, there's plenty of those, plenty of those for sure.
01:25 - Give us some details.
01:27 - You know, just a bunch of like jobs,
01:29 quitting jobs, getting fired,
01:31 trying college out, you know, dropping out,
01:35 just a lot of different, you know,
01:37 I'm good with knowing what I'm good at
01:40 and what I'm not good at,
01:41 so I'm big on just pursuing what I feel like is my purpose
01:46 and that's what I did.
01:48 - How do you know what you're good at
01:49 and what you're not good at?
01:50 And I say that because there are a lot of people out here
01:53 wandering aimlessly through life during careers
01:55 that may not be really aligned with their destiny.
01:59 How did you find that?
02:01 - Church. - Church.
02:02 - I gotta go to church. - Yeah.
02:04 - Better ask God. - Better ask God.
02:05 - God knows best.
02:06 - Mm-hmm, all right, yeah, you a Southern boy.
02:09 - It's true, hey, come on, come on, it's true.
02:11 - Okay, okay.
02:13 So what was the moment where you knew, I made it?
02:16 - Forbes.
02:19 (both laughing)
02:20 They put that network, that's when I knew.
02:24 Family started calling.
02:25 - Yeah.
02:26 - It ain't the best calls either, but you know.
02:28 Yeah, that's when I knew, man, it's Forbes, for sure.
02:31 - And your friend Jack Harlow,
02:32 he was in Forbes not too long ago.
02:34 - Last year, yeah.
02:35 - Yeah, did you call him and rub it in a little bit?
02:37 - Yeah, nah, yeah, nah, I didn't wanna,
02:39 after they put my money out there,
02:40 I was like, I ain't calling nobody.
02:41 - You ain't calling nobody.
02:42 - Yeah, the calls was coming in,
02:44 I ain't have enough time to call nobody, man,
02:45 everybody calling me.
02:46 So, no, I'm thankful though, honestly.
02:49 It's been a great journey, you know, so.
02:52 - Yeah.
02:53 - It's a lot more to go, you know?
02:54 This is just the beginner.
02:55 - I'm just getting curious,
02:56 how did you manage your money as you were on the come up?
02:59 Was it you, did you have somebody,
03:02 a financial manager helping you?
03:04 - Well, yeah, I met these financial managers through Odell.
03:10 When I was living with Odell a couple summers back,
03:13 he was telling me, he was like,
03:13 "Man, I know you're not making that much money,
03:15 but you should get some financial advisors."
03:18 So I met a guy named Stephan,
03:20 and he owns a company where he has a huge team
03:23 of different financial advisors,
03:24 and they all helped me from then,
03:26 even before I was getting real money.
03:28 And they worked with me, you know,
03:30 they weren't charging me like the biggest fee that they,
03:33 'cause they have a lot of different athletes
03:34 that they work with.
03:35 So thankfully, they let me come in
03:38 with my little bit of money at the time,
03:40 and they helped me out,
03:41 and then as I gained money,
03:42 they helped me out with that as well.
03:44 - What was the biggest--
03:45 - Just investing and, you know.
03:46 - Investing, investing in what?
03:47 - Hey, come on, man,
03:49 we ain't gonna tell you how to much, no.
03:50 Y'all know enough.
03:52 They knew the network.
03:53 (laughing)
03:54 - Well, help us out.
03:55 If somebody were to invest, what would you suggest?
03:57 - Into something that could change the world.
04:02 I think a lot of people try to invest in stuff
04:05 that has nothing to do with anything,
04:07 or, you know, just, if it is a meaning behind it to you,
04:12 and what you have in your life, and what you believe,
04:14 you should, that should be something
04:16 that you should look to invest in.
04:17 - Yeah.
04:18 - 'Cause it's purposeful, you know?
04:20 - Yeah.
04:20 - So, what was the biggest money mistake
04:22 you've made since you've made it?
04:23 - I knew this was coming.
04:24 - Yeah, it's coming.
04:25 - I haven't made a big money mistake yet.
04:28 Nah, I don't really spend too much.
04:30 I think majority of anything crazy that I got
04:34 was all gifts and stuff, so I think, yeah,
04:38 it hasn't come yet.
04:39 I just spend everything I have,
04:41 I just spend it on business
04:42 and trying to increase more revenue.
04:46 Nothing is like just going and trying to buy cars.
04:49 - So you don't go spend dumb money.
04:50 So what is your biggest splurge,
04:52 if you don't do too much of it?
04:54 - Back into the business.
04:55 - Back into it. - For real, yeah.
04:57 - Okay.
04:58 Well, Drisky, I'm also curious,
05:00 you don't spend too much money.
05:04 You don't do a lot of splurging.
05:05 - Well, no, I didn't say I don't spend too much.
05:07 I spend money, but it's on the right things.
05:09 Yeah, it's on the right things.
05:11 - So, do you feel like fame and money
05:14 hasn't changed you at all?
05:15 - We ain't got to that point yet, trust me.
05:19 - You haven't gotten there.
05:19 - Nah, not yet.
05:21 And I don't think it'll ever happen.
05:22 I think you gotta keep good people around you.
05:25 So I pride myself on keeping my family,
05:29 my close friends, my team, everybody close together.
05:31 So it keeps you tight knit
05:33 and knowing where you're headed
05:35 and where you came from, more importantly.
05:38 So yeah, that's really what I'm on, yeah.
05:41 - So what do you believe that's about you
05:44 that made you successful?
05:45 Because respectfully, there's a lot of funny people
05:47 out here.
05:47 What made you successful?
05:49 - Um, a little bit of everything
05:52 just working in my favor.
05:53 And I think it's small pieces with my team,
05:58 myself, my parenting that I had growing up,
06:01 discipline, and a lot of amongst other things too as well.
06:07 But yeah, I gotta give it to all those,
06:09 not just one thing, you know?
06:11 - And as you know, you've been in the headlines
06:14 quite a bit lately.
06:15 - Oh girl, you crazy.
06:16 (laughing)
06:17 - You've been in the headlines.
06:18 - She crazy.
06:19 (laughing)
06:20 - I'm curious, how does it feel?
06:22 - What you hear about?
06:23 - You know what I heard about.
06:24 - I don't know what you talking about.
06:25 - Well, you got some people in high places coming for you.
06:29 We wanna know, is it real?
06:30 Is it fake?
06:31 - Hey man, y'all just gotta keep watching.
06:33 - Just gotta keep watching?
06:34 Well, how does that even feel to have people?
06:36 - Let me see, I gotta peek behind my back.
06:38 - Look at you, uh-uh, I gotta look behind my back.
06:40 Who coming for you?
06:41 - Nah, they ain't coming for you.
06:42 (laughing)
06:44 - No, just, really, how does it feel
06:45 to have people in high places
06:48 doing this?
06:49 - Nah, it's, you know, we here man.
06:52 Your idols turn to ruffles, that's what they say.
06:54 - Oh, so it's real.
06:56 - Hey, I ain't saying too much, that's all I'm gonna say.
06:59 - That's all you're gonna say?
07:00 - That's all I'm gonna say.
07:01 - That's what you're gonna leave us with?
07:02 - Mm-hmm.
07:03 - All right, Drewski, thank you so much.
07:04 - You see, I keep looking.
07:05 - Yeah, I see you looking.
07:06 (laughing)
07:07 I'm too close to you now.
07:08 - Nah, we good, we good, we good.
07:09 - I'm too close to you.
07:09 - We good, y'all, we good.
07:10 (laughing)
07:11 Thank you though, thank you.
07:12 - Yes, thank you so much.
07:13 - Yes.
07:14 (silence)
07:16 (silence)
