00:00 an ongoing investigation to find out what really happened.
00:02 As of right now, we know he was found in his home in Los Angeles and he was found in his
00:06 jacuzzi.
00:07 There wasn't any sign of foul play or substance use aside from prescription medication and
00:11 even then, they were inside the house and not on the scene.
00:15 According to Global News, it may take a couple of weeks before they get a solid answer on
00:18 what exactly happened, but we now know that there was a dramatic 15-second dispatch call
00:23 made that sent first responders to Matthew's home.
00:26 A disturbing recording of the moment emergency services rushed to the scene has now been
00:31 leaked.
00:32 The audio tape refers to "drowning" known as in Emergency Medical Situation 9.
00:36 Matthew Perry's assistant was the one who made the urgent 911 call after the actor suffered
00:41 a cardiac arrest in his hot tub on Saturday.
00:44 He was found in his hot tub connected to his pool in his backyard, but according to the
00:48 Daily Mail, they reported he wasn't in the tub for long before his personal assistant
00:52 found him.
00:53 The assistant attempted to pull his head above the water to get oxygen and when she realized
00:57 there was no hope of breathing on his own, she tried to resuscitate him but to no avail.
01:02 LA law enforcement reported that his body had not been waterlogged when she found him,
01:07 meaning he was only in there for a short time before the alleged drowning.
01:11 The coroner showed up on the scene hours later and they took him awake.
01:15 His remains have been given to the family and they are in the process of deciding what
01:19 the best course of action will be.
01:21 In the wake of this tragic passing, many celebrities are now speaking out about possible warning
01:26 signs that we could've seen of the tragedy to come.
01:28 It's been reported that Matthew played pickleball almost every day with a female friend and
01:33 she noticed that he had been fatigued over the last week and appeared tired on the day
01:37 he died.
01:38 His pickleball partner has told how she spotted scary warning signs that he was unwell just
01:43 hours before his death in his hot tub.
01:46 Extra host Billy Bush revealed on his Instagram that his partner spotted signs he wasn't
01:50 quite right.
01:51 He wrote, "I spoke to the woman he played with this morning and every morning.
01:55 She is in shock, adored Matthew and said he had been fatigued today and over the past
02:00 week.
02:01 A little more than usual as well.
02:03 He played for one hour and then went home."
02:05 Matthew last posted on Instagram 5 days before his sudden death at age 54.
02:11 He shared a night time photo of himself inside a hot tub on Monday, October 23.
02:15 In the caption, he wrote, "Oh so warm water swirling around makes you feel good?
02:19 I'm Mat Man."
02:21 If you didn't know, Mat Man is a name he used in recent days while posting on social media
02:26 where he would often include references and imagery related to Batman.
02:30 In the past, he said he felt a connection to the comic book hero, a wealthy but damaged
02:34 man who used his grief at losing his parents as a child into helping others.
02:39 He said he felt that he was also helping others by speaking out about his struggles with addiction.
02:44 In fact, Matthew recently posted a picture of Batman's logo illuminated in red lights
02:48 with the caption, "Sleep well everybody.
02:50 I've got the city tonight."
02:52 The day before the hot tub photo, he posted a video of the moon with the caption, "Do
02:55 you understand what I'm trying to tell you?
02:57 I'm Mat Man."
02:58 As recently as Tuesday, he posted on Twitter saying, "Let's make stigmas a stigma.
03:03 I'm Mat Man #mentalhealth" but it wasn't all cryptic messages.
03:07 On October 15, he shared a rare photo of himself with his father, actor John Bennett Perry.
03:12 In the caption, he wrote, "Here is me and my father John, both holding a beverage."
03:16 So it seemed like he was just sharing happy memories here.
03:19 Fans have also been looking back at other moments which almost seemed like they could
03:23 have foreshadowed this incident, like Jennifer Aniston's four-word warning to Matthew, which
03:27 has now resurfaced.
03:29 As we know, Matthew rose to fame for his role as Chandler Bing on the hit 90s sitcom alongside
03:34 Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.
03:39 And just last year, he revealed that he and Jennifer had stayed in each other's lives
03:42 and remained in close contact.
03:44 He said, "She was the one that reached out the most.
03:47 You know, I'm really grateful to her for that."
03:49 He went on to reveal that it was Jennifer who confronted him first about his addictions
03:53 during the filming of the show when the symptoms of his problem were just too obvious to ignore.
03:58 Apparently, she approached him during a break in filming and told him, "We know you're
04:02 drinking."
04:03 Looking back on that moment, Matthew thought it was scary.
04:05 At that point in his life, he said he should've been the toast of the town, but instead, he
04:09 was in a dark room meeting with nothing but dealers, and he felt completely alone.
04:14 In his own mind, he thought he was doing a perfectly fine job hiding his habits from
04:18 his co-stars, but at a certain point, they all knew he was in trouble and did their best
04:23 to support him.
04:24 Matthew spoke about the moment that all of his friend's co-stars found out about it.
04:28 Matthew said they were all understanding and they were all patient.
04:31 Quote, "It's like penguins, penguins in nature when one is sick or when one is very
04:35 injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up.
04:39 They walk around it until that penguin can walk on its own.
04:42 That's kind of what the cast did for me."
04:44 For a while, he thought he could hide behind his infectious humor and push forward with
04:48 his life on the wings of the success of Friends.
04:51 He said, "I thought being funny all the time was how I would get through it.
04:54 I thought Friends was going to fix everything, but it didn't."
04:57 Ultimately, Matthew would get clean and sober in 2001, but he estimated that he relapsed
05:02 60 or 70 times over the years, according to his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the
05:08 Big Terrible Thing.
05:10 Along the way, he had many stints in rehabilitation facilities and suffered through a number of
05:15 serious health issues, including a 5-month hospitalization in 2018 after his colon ruptured
05:21 due to overuse.
05:22 So he had an incredibly long battle just trying to beat his own habits, which was extremely
05:26 difficult for him as it would be for anyone.
05:29 Yes, he said he had good support system, but it's not always that simple.
05:33 In his memoir, which was released in November of 2022, he opened up about his struggle with
05:38 the overuse of substances and how he didn't want to jeopardize the show because he loved
05:43 his co-workers and the scripts.
05:45 And he didn't want to let anyone down.
05:47 He says that at that point in his issue, the show had really taken off and the stakes were
05:51 really high, so he kept it a secret until the show ended.
05:55 He was under a lot of stress and pressure because it was filmed in front of a live audience,
05:59 and when the audience wouldn't laugh, he would go into full panic mode and would sometimes
06:03 start sweating and convulsing.
06:05 So the use of substances helped take some of the edge off.
06:08 But that wasn't there the issue started, though.
06:10 Back when he was filming Fools Rushed In, he got into a jet ski accident on set and
06:15 was given pain medication that was highly addictive, which is what kicked off his unfortunate
06:19 habit of using them to take the edge off.
06:22 He confessed he had gone to over 6,000 AA meetings, had been in and out of rehab 15
06:27 times, and had been in detox 65 times just to get fully clean from his issues.
06:32 He truly did put in the effort to get better and be in a better place in life, but even
06:37 after all of this, he had residual health problems which could have been the cause of
06:40 his passing as well.
06:42 When sharing about his substance use and the toll it began to take on his body, Matthew
06:46 confessed he was taking as many as 55 pills a day, which contributed to his weight dropping
06:51 to just 128 pounds.
06:54 In an interview last year, he admitted that he didn't know how to stop.
06:57 He also shared an analogy that explains the power that these substances had over him at
07:01 the height of his TV career.
07:03 He said, "If the police came over to my house and said, 'If you drink tonight, we're
07:06 going to take you to jail,' I'd start packing.
07:09 I couldn't stop because the disease and the addiction is progressive, so it gets worse
07:13 and worse as you grow older."
07:15 At his lowest point, Matthew revealed that he was given just a 2% chance to live while
07:20 in hospital.
07:21 He spoke about this horrific experience in the memoir and how he had the mental strength
07:25 to survive that trauma.
07:27 During last year's interview, he told a story and became overcome with emotion, saying,
07:31 "I'm an extremely grateful guy.
07:33 I'm grateful to be alive, and that's for sure.
07:36 And that gives me the possibility to do anything."
07:39 He went on to reveal that part of his inspiration for writing an open and honest memoir with
07:43 all the ups and downs was the hope that his stories could serve as kind of a lifeline
07:47 for others like Jennifer Aniston was for him.
07:51 As we know, his memoir exposed his struggle with addictions, which got so severe that
07:55 in 2018, at the age of 49, he suffered a gastrointestinal perforation as a result of his extreme usage.
08:02 He was given just a 2% chance of living after being comatose for two weeks, and the actor
08:07 had to use a colostomy bag while his colon healed.
08:11 Matthew revealed that while his body was relying on the bag, he woke up in a horrific state
08:15 50-60 times throughout the five months he was hospitalized.
08:18 So he made it very clear that he was suffering during this time, and the worst part about
08:23 all of this was the secret it all was.
08:25 Very few people knew that he was going through this, and Matthew once joked that viewers
08:29 of Friends could now tell what substances he was using by observing his changing appearance.
08:34 He said in his book, "You can track the trajectory of my addiction if you gauge my
08:38 weight from season to season.
08:39 When I'm carrying weight, it's alcohol.
08:41 When I'm skinny, it's pills.
08:43 When I have a goatee, it's a lot of pills."
08:45 Which is extremely sad when you think about how well it was hidden from everyone around
08:49 him.
08:50 In the wake of his sudden death, reactions and tributes have been pouring in from the
08:53 Friends community, including some of his former co-stars.
08:58 Many of these amazing tributes paying homage to Perry's life and legacy both on and off
09:02 screen.
09:03 The official Friends account on Instagram made a post saying, "We are devastated to
09:06 learn of Matthew Perry's passing.
09:08 He was a true gift to us all, and our heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and all
09:13 of his fans."
09:14 A representative for the actor and law enforcement confirmed his death to NBC News.
09:18 He was found at his home in Pacific Palisades after an apparent drowning.
09:22 He was only 54.
09:24 Known best for his iconic portrayal of Chandler Bing on the long-running sitcom Friends, Matthew
09:29 Perry won international recognition and critical acclaim throughout his prolific Hollywood
09:33 career.
09:34 There is no doubt that he will be truly missed.
09:38 (Outro)
09:52 "I'm just gonna say it again.
09:53 Matthew Perry was a true gift to us all, and our heart goes out to his family, loved
09:54 ones, and all of his fans.
09:55 We are devastated to learn of Matthew Perry's passing.
09:56 He was a true gift to us all, and our heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and all
