00:00 Hello, I'm Gill Buchanan, the editor of the Falkirk Herald, and I'm here to tell you about
00:04 some of the stories that are making the headlines in our print edition which is on sale now.
00:10 We have our eagerly awaited Primary 1 supplement for 2023 in print. It has all 82 class photographs
00:17 of new school starters from across the district. We'll lead on the story that Falkirk Council
00:22 is one of only 10 local authorities in Scotland to receive funding from the Scottish Government
00:28 to improve its school's estate. The £23 million awarded will go towards expanding
00:34 the current Carpentrige High School in Grangemouth and building a primary campus on the site
00:39 to improve the transition for youngsters with additional support for learning needs.
00:43 We also look back at the Camlyn Tarworks fire in 1973. Over 60 firefighters were injured,
00:51 damage was estimated at £2 million, over £200 million in today's money, and hundreds
00:56 of people had to be evacuated from their homes. Thankfully no one was killed in the incident.
01:03 We detail a proposal from the Church of Scotland in the area to unite many of its congregations
01:08 which would also lead to the closure of many church buildings across the district. Tributes
01:14 have been paid to Slemanan man Dennis Kerr who did much for his community following his
01:19 death aged 70. And Paulmont woman Betty Glenn has received another honour for her work in
01:24 her community over the last 50 years.
01:28 Historian Iain Scott looks back at artists connected with Grangemouth, including Alan
01:33 Davy and the Cocktoo Twins. And in sport, Sony Centre Falkirk Fury basketball team secured
01:40 a crucial 10-point victory over senior men Division 1 title rivals St Mirren to go top
01:45 of the table.
01:46 All these stories and much more are in a print edition which is on sale now and also online
01:52 at www.falkirkettle.co.uk. Thank you.
