00:00 The Big Dog, The Beegdug, The Burgdug, or as he's known today, The Tribal Chief.
00:08 WWE have finally, FINALLY figured out a main event level gig for Roman Reigns that showcases
00:13 his many talents that will make a bunch of money, and that actually excites us about
00:17 the Universal Championship for the first time in god 4 years, but bloody hell, the course
00:21 never did run smooth.
00:23 The whole Big Dog experiment made WWE genuinely feel like the goddamn Twilight Zone at times,
00:29 and to be clear, this is not a list that's going to dump on Reigns as a performer, not
00:32 interested in that, because remember no superstar has a perfect game except for Keith Lee of
00:36 course, it is and always has been WWE's job to present their stars in a way that showcases
00:40 their positives and hides their negatives in order to generate fan support, and on that
00:44 front, over the years they have repeatedly failed the large pup.
00:47 Gonna try and keep this at 10, pray for Mojo, here are the 10 worst mistakes WWE made with
00:53 Roman Reigns.
00:54 And hey, if you haven't yet, go subscribe to partsFUNknown, in a few weeks all future

01:17 of these silly wrestling lists ever again.
01:20 10.
01:21 Baby Blues
01:22 You know how since Tangled all the Disney princesses have had the same exact face because
01:26 money somehow?
01:27 Well for the longest time Roman was WWE's Disney princess, and for some reason they
01:31 made him wear blue contact lenses because of course, this man is not handsome with brown
01:35 eyes, no handsome here, definitely not a biscuit, wouldn't f*** this guy, no sir.
01:40 It may seem like a small point, but it's emblematic of a larger issue at play, which
01:43 was Roman feeling way more like a product than a person, that's what John Cena was
01:47 talking about when he went all pew pew shooty tooty, calling Reigns corporately created,
01:52 sure, give your superstars an iconic outfit.
01:54 But when it comes to actively going in and changing their creator wrestler save file
01:58 to make them more toyetic, that's when it becomes uncanny and we start to see the committee
02:02 under the skin, stripping Roman of his agency and relatability.
02:05 And speaking of Big Match John,
02:07 9.
02:08 Big Match Gone
02:09 Roman Reigns vs John Cena happened on PPV and you know what?
02:12 It was good.
02:13 Not as good as it would have been if Roman had been over, but it was good.
02:16 Which big 4 PPV did that happen at again?
02:18 Oh that's right, No Mercy, in front of a gate of 16,000 people instead of, you know,
02:23 a stadium or something.
02:25 No one knows the future, I get it.
02:27 In 2017 you don't know if John Cena can be relied upon to come back after such hits
02:30 as Playing With Fire and Daddy's Home 2, 2 Dads 2 Dubious.
02:35 And hey, maybe Roman's as over as he's ever gonna get, so run the program while you
02:38 still can.
02:39 Except that, the face that runs the place vs the head of the table, right now could
02:43 be the moneyest match in WWE's immediate future, but because Reigns has already gone
02:47 over Cena clean as a sheet, the match's drawing power drastic go down.
02:52 And Kevin WWE still have Rock Roman in their back pocket.
02:55 8.
02:56 One Man Band 2014 was a pretty excellent year for WWE
02:59 story-wise.
03:00 Daniel Bryan won at WrestleMania, Suplex City became Superhotfire, and Shield broke up in
03:05 spectacular fashion.
03:06 In fact, there's an argument to be made that WWE haven't been able to top that year
03:10 since because that was when the weird big dog thing started in earnest, and a lot of
03:14 that has to do with how one of the greatest factions in wrestling history fell apart.
03:18 The Shield imploded, and Rollins got a new attitude, outfit, entrance theme and direction.
03:23 Dean Ambrose got a new outfit, entrance theme and direction, and Roman's just sort of
03:27 stayed the Shield guy.
03:28 Same fatigues, only with a super radical Prince meets Monster Energy drink style logo on the
03:33 front.
03:34 Same music, same pretty much everything.
03:36 Dean and Seth emerged from the ashes of the Shield, fundamentally changed by its destruction
03:40 because yeah, it was a pretty big deal, and WWE just promoted Roman to the main event
03:45 saying, "Look, it's a Shield.
03:46 You guys like the Shield, right?
03:47 Doo doo, doo doo, come on everyone, doo doo."
03:49 And we're like, "No, we liked the Shield.
03:52 They were a team.
03:53 Who's that guy?"
03:54 "He's the Shield," said WWE.
03:55 "No," said fans.
03:56 "Who is that one man?
03:57 What is his character?"
03:58 "Ha ha," said WWE.
04:00 "Big dog, like the Hounds of Justice, but one of them."
04:03 That was Roman for the longest time, just recognizable branding, a man who couldn't
04:08 move on like someone doing Gangnam Style today.
04:11 7.
04:12 Doing Dean Dirty
04:13 We sort of touched on this, but it needs its own entry because the fact that the Shield
04:16 triple threat did not happen at WrestleMania 31 or at the very least SummerSlam 2014 is
04:21 absolutely baffling.
04:23 It's so weird looking back on it now that Roman was the guy who was still wearing the
04:27 Shield colours coming out to the Shield song, but he actually had the least to do with the
04:32 fallout of the breakup.
04:33 The very next PPV after the Shield, remember the biggest faction wrestling at the time,
04:37 had been destroyed by cruel and hideous betrayal.
04:40 At Money in the Bank, Seth and Dean got into it and Roman was in a ladder match for the
04:43 vacant WWE World Championship.
04:46 I mean, gee sure Roman, chase that paper.
04:48 Sure, Roman fought Randy at SummerSlam and got pulled from a match with Rollins later
04:52 on because of a hernia, but still, Roman left Dean behind before the story was finished.
04:57 If Roman isn't presented to care about his brotherhood with Dean Ambrose and his hatred
05:01 of Seth Rollins, how can we care about Roman and his weird emotionless race to the top?
05:06 6.
05:07 The 2015 Rumble
05:08 F***ing obviously.
05:10 So as we all know, this is where it went really, really wrong.
05:14 And Roman Reigns fundamentally broke as a product.
05:17 Try and imagine, if you can, a WrestleMania where the card is Triple H vs Sting, The Shield
05:22 Triple Threat and Daniel Bryan vs Brock Lesnar.
05:25 I would buy that for a dollar.
05:27 The main event wasn't finished with Daniel Bryan, just like Roman Reigns should not have
05:30 been finished with Rollins and Ambrose, and WWE bafflingly, bewilderingly brought Daniel
05:35 Bryan back to television before the Rumble.
05:38 F***ing why?
05:40 You didn't have to.
05:41 If Roman had to win the Rumble, the last thing you want is the most over underdog of the
05:45 last generation, the man who didn't lose his World Championship, who only just returned
05:49 after a career threatening injury, suddenly back a viable and in fact perfect contender
05:54 to win the Royal Rumble.
05:56 Mistake one, right there, up front.
05:58 And then they eliminate Bryan early to try and make fans grieve and move on.
06:01 That didn't work before having the worst final stretch in Royal Rumble history of Big
06:06 Show and Kane grandparing people over the top rope.
06:09 Anti-Roman sentiment has mostly never been about Roman.
06:12 It boils down to this one time where he was not the right guy, fans didn't get a choice,
06:17 and wrestling fans hold f***ing grudges.
06:20 5.
06:21 The 2016 Rumble
06:22 Jesus Christ, this one's just funny to look back on.
06:26 So at some point during 2015, Roman developed canine narcolepsy and WWE's favourite thing
06:31 became have Roman get beaten down, have a nice long nap, then return for the end.
06:35 At SummerSlam 2015, in a match with Reigns and Ambrose vs The Wyatt, Reigns got knocked
06:39 down and stayed lying down for no joke for over 5 minutes, so much so that the fans started
06:44 chanting "Roman's sleeping".
06:46 First of all, that is hilarious in a nothing matters kind of way.
06:49 And then at the 2016 Rumble, a Rumble that was, remember, built around Roman going the
06:53 distance, coming in at number one, lasting right till the end in order to cling onto
06:57 his WWE Championship.
06:58 WWE had him attacked, removed from the match without being eliminated, gave him a nice
07:03 snooze backstage in his little basket like a good papa, before coming out for the end.
07:07 Literally, WWE fans told WWE, "We do not buy this man as the best wrestler."
07:13 WWE responded, "Oh, well we'll have him wrestle less.
07:16 Then you'll see."
07:17 So daft, all the time.
07:19 4.
07:20 Slow Dads Are Forever
07:21 The main event of WrestleMania 32 was awful.
07:25 Just a big dog worse.
07:26 Like a match the fans didn't want, an end result the fans didn't want, because they
07:30 will not forgive Roman, and to top it off, it went half an hour, half an hour of heatless
07:37 misery circling the drain of the Roman coronation.
07:40 Like if Roman had speared Steph, speared Trips, was done in five and then back to the Winchester
07:44 have a nice cold pint to wait for all this to blow over, then at least it would have
07:47 been quick.
07:48 Half an hour, and all it does is poison the fans further against Roman as a main eventer,
07:54 because he isn't a bad wrestler, certainly isn't today, and wasn't a bad wrestler
07:57 then, but if fans are fundamentally opposed to a match, that match will be bad, even if
08:02 it's short, but by dragging it out, angering everyone so much more, boring them so much
08:07 more, this just furthered that false narrative that Reigns was a terrible wrestler who should
08:11 never main event WrestleMania because bad things happen when he does.
08:15 Completely unfair to the lad.
08:16 3.
08:17 With Enemies Like These
08:18 Hogan had Piper, Andre and Savage.
08:21 The Rock had Triple H, Austin had Mr. McMahon.
08:23 A top babyface is only as good as the villains that he overcomes.
08:27 Who were Roman's top villains?
08:29 Who helped to define him?
08:30 Who is the Joker to his Batman?
08:32 Rollins was never really given that spot.
08:35 Bray Wyatt, who'd been off the boil for over a year.
08:38 Brock, maybe, but he's been dealing with his own fan backlash since 2016 or so.
08:42 Genuinely the only person that comes to mind who had something close to an enduring rivalry
08:46 with Roman, something that could have elevated both men, was Braun Strowman.
08:50 Then WWE nerfed him beyond belief so that The Shield could do some more six man tag
08:54 team matches.
08:55 WWE repeatedly failed to build up good villains with consistently strong booking to really
08:59 challenge Roman or put him through the kind of adversity that really builds character.
09:03 It sure didn't happen with Baron Corbin and f***ing dog food.
09:06 Not that it would have really mattered anyway because…
09:08 2.
09:09 Laugh It Up, Fuzzball
09:10 WWE babyfaces suck.
09:13 Apart from a select few, they are all the same guy and that guy sucks.
09:18 And has ever since that guy's name was John Cena, or Seth Rollins, or Dean Ambrose, or
09:23 Sheamus, or any of the other babyface world champions whose sole contribution to a main
09:27 event feud is "ah, I'm not really bothered or threatened or engaged in any actual emotional
09:32 way, my opponent's poopy though, look at him, he's got weird nips, or a sparkle crotch,
09:36 or tater tots, or suffering suckatash".
09:38 It's not just that those lines are lame and only a lame, insecure, unfunny asshole
09:43 would say them.
09:44 It's the fact that none of these babyfaces care about anything.
09:47 That being glib is their biggest virtue.
09:49 You know why people like Daniel Bryan?
09:51 Because he cared about stuff.
09:53 When he got mistreated he got f***ing pissed about it.
09:55 And when he failed, it got to him and that gave his villains agency.
09:59 Sami Zayn had the same fire in NXT.
10:01 Hell it's why Cena's best years were his last in the company when he started cutting
10:04 serious impassioned promos about f***ing angry he was.
10:08 It's why Kevin Owens is the best babyface going right now.
10:10 It didn't matter to WWE that during his Shield days, Roman had already gotten over
10:14 as a man of few words.
10:15 That's what he was good at.
10:16 But no, he's the top babyface now and he was going to do the WWE top babyface things
10:20 whether they suited him or not and really that's what it all boils down to.
10:25 Number one, the Hulk Hogan problem.
10:27 Not like those problems, you know the ones I mean.
10:30 I mean the idea that in some form or another WWE still operates the way it did during the
10:35 80s.
10:36 Have one top guy and have him carry your company.
10:38 People step up, they're all set down under the big boot of the one top Superman.
10:43 They tried it with Luger, Diesel, Austin, Cena, Roman.
10:46 You could argue that it worked under Austin, but was it because Austin was the one top
10:49 guy or was it because the Attitude Era had Austin, Rock, Triple H, Foley, Undertaker?
10:55 Point is, it's never really been about Roman Reigns.
10:58 It's been about the fact that WWE seems to think there's only room for one person
11:02 in the main event of WrestleMania and that one person has to be Roman Reigns for a generation.
11:08 Because it makes everything else feel redundant.
11:10 It makes when other superstars get lightning hot an inconvenience to WWE rather than a
11:15 blessing.
11:16 It makes getting behind someone new feel like a wasted exercise despite WWE repeatedly telling
11:21 us, "apparently we're the authority now".
11:23 When there's only room for one guy to carry the company on his back, every other part
11:27 of the creative process suffers.
11:30 Especially the guy who's been put in that position.
11:32 The Big Dog.
11:33 And that's our list.
11:34 What do you think are the biggest mistakes WWE made with Roman Reigns?
