00:00 MCA will fare worse should it decide to leave Barisan Nasional and go solo, say analysts.
00:08 Akademi Nusantaras Azmi Hassan said, with only two parliamentary seats, namely Ayuhitam
00:14 and Tanjung Pihai, and several state seats, the ethnic Chinese party does not have the
00:19 strength nor capacity to go it alone in future elections.
00:23 He said that MCA's uneasiness with BN was mainly due to the cooperation between UMNO
00:29 and DAP in Anwar Ibrahim's unity government.
00:33 He added that MCA's staying with BN might relegate them to a subordinate role, while
00:38 going solo could be more risky as they will continue to struggle to gain the support of
00:42 non-Malays.
00:43 Meanwhile, Oe Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said MCA must secure
00:50 more seats before proclaiming its readiness to go solo as the party's chances for political
00:55 survival would be virtually non-existent.
00:59 Last month, MCA President Wee Kwa Siong said his party was prepared to chart its own path
01:04 if any party in BN decides to officially form new ties and abandon its current allies in
01:10 the coalition.
