A man forked out £2k to have thousands of tiny dots tattooed as hair on his head says his wife loves his new look.

Anthony Donnellan, 44, opted for 'scalp micro-pigmentation' - instead of a traditional hair transplant - when his hair began to fall out.

Scalp micro-pigmentation is the process of tattooing permanent small ink dots - designed to recreate the look of hair.

The procedure usually takes three sessions of three hours each to allow time for the initial layer to heal.

After having his third and final session at Final Chapter Tattoos in Hyde, Manchester, by artist Dean Gunther, 35, Anthony says it's "boosted his confidence" and was "worth the pain".

00:02 My name is Dean Gunter,
00:07 and we are here at my studio final chapter
00:09 in Greater Manchester.
00:10 And today we're gonna do scalp micro pigmentation.
00:13 I've been in the industry for 15 years,
00:20 and I've seen so many bad results
00:22 of people not having the experience.
00:25 And I decided I could definitely give it a go.
00:27 That's when I started doing it.
00:29 And it must be thousands of tattoos over the 15 years.
00:32 How many sessions to complete?
00:36 Normally I would say about three to four.
00:38 That is a good range
00:40 because you need to work it up gradually.
00:44 You can't go too dark straight away.
00:47 You need to give it time to heal and settle into the skin.
00:51 With the micro pigmentation, you've got to give it a chance.
00:54 I would say six weeks at least.
00:57 The first session can take about six hours or more,
01:00 and they come back in a few weeks,
01:02 and then we'll add a few more, and then do final touches.
01:06 It goes less every time.
01:08 You can never take away, but you can always add on.
01:12 I think it puts a smile back on their face.
01:14 Some people can be very insecure about their looks,
01:17 and I mean, cosmetic, plastic surgery, all these things,
01:20 people do it for a reason, because they feel that void.
01:23 And sometimes people go a bit bald a bit earlier
01:27 than what they would anticipate.
01:29 When people get this procedure done
01:31 and they can see the change,
01:33 it definitely boosts their confidence
01:36 and just puts a smile on their face.
01:38 And then it makes me feel happy
01:40 to see that you've helped somebody
01:42 feel better about themselves.
