00:00 We're here at Camp Jeep New York, pavilion adjacent to the convention center, to take
00:21 a look at the history of Jeep as well as its future.
00:24 We're going to see the wraps come off the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
00:33 A typical Jeep fashion, the Grand Cherokee made it on stage the hard way by taking the
00:36 dirt trail.
00:37 We took a look at the brand new vehicle, which offers more refinement and improved off-road
00:43 performance.
00:44 Power trains have been dramatically improved with the use of the 3.7 liter V6 engine shared
00:49 with the Liberty, replacing the dated inline six.
00:53 Also, the top engine is now going to be 5.7 liter Hemi V8.
00:58 Fortunately, the 4.7 liter V8 will also carry over, being a very mainstream engine in the
01:03 middle.
01:04 The Grand Cherokee is going to be offered with a choice of three off-road systems for
01:08 consumers ranging from the light duty off-roader to the serious enthusiast who might be headed
01:12 out to the Rubicon.
01:14 The Grand Cherokee features not only a more solid platform with improved road dynamics,
01:18 but it also moves upscale in its luxury offerings.
01:21 In top form, the Grand Cherokee will be available with electronic stability control, rear park
01:26 assist, smart beam auto-dimming headlamps, serious satellite radio, and hands-free communication
01:32 system.
01:34 When the Grand Cherokee reaches showrooms this fall, it will also be joined by a revised
01:40 2005 Liberty.
01:41 The exterior has been freshened to reflect the bolder, more upright designs imitated
01:45 on the Grand Cherokee, and it will be offered in the US for the first time with a diesel
01:50 engine.
01:51 The diesel may appeal to not only those seeking fuel economy and cost-effective driving, but
01:57 also off-road enthusiasts, as it will offer tremendous torque, up to 295 pound-feet.
02:02 While we're here, let's take a look back at the history of Jeep.
02:06 Right here is a 1944 Willys MB.
02:09 This is the sport utility that started it all and got our American GIs into the action.
02:19 Check out this, it's a 1951 Willys wagon.
02:22 This is when sport utilities truly went family style.
02:25 And how about this, a classic Willys speedster.
02:29 This is a vehicle that truly put sport in sport utility.
02:35 And the familiar CJ.
02:37 This is a vehicle we still see on the roads today, and has led to today's latest YJs and
02:41 TJs.
02:48 Through the years, Jeeps have come in all sizes and shapes, and appeal to off-roaders
02:52 of all ages.
02:54 Ready for its mid-year introduction is the new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.
02:58 Long wheelbase Wrangler, something that Scrambler fans have wanted for years.
03:03 And now we've made it to the potential future for Jeep.
03:06 This rescue concept is a full-size vehicle, sized to compete with the Hummer, which has
03:11 really unpaved the way for Jeep to expand into this vital market segment, a place that
03:16 Chrysler has not competed for many years.
03:20 Jeep is listening and is anxious for your feedback.
