00:00 When I met Maxine through all of it, I didn't know her.
00:02 Yeah.
00:03 But it shows just how much you endured as a child.
00:05 OK, wait a minute.
00:06 That took me-- but you met--
00:07 oh, that--
00:09 Yeah.
00:10 Oh, wow.
00:12 How did that-- it made that--
00:13 you met my--
00:14 It still gets you.
00:15 Oh, my god.
00:16 These things don't go away so fast.
00:18 You got me there, man.
00:19 I'm sorry.
00:20 Tyler Perry overwhelmed with emotion
00:22 while speaking about his late mother.
00:25 A lot of times, just in my entire life,
00:27 I'm speaking as the little boy that I was speaking
00:30 to my mother, you know, just-- and I want to pass
00:32 that on to somebody else.
00:34 You got me there, man.
00:35 I'm sorry.
00:36 The groundbreaking filmmaker stops by The View
00:38 ahead of the premiere of his documentary, Maxine's Baby,
00:41 The Tyler Perry Story.
00:43 Tyler, I just want to tell you how blessed
00:46 I am to have a son like you.
00:48 They asked me at the end of the documentary,
00:50 who do you think you are?
00:51 Are you a writer?
00:51 Are you a producer?
00:52 A director?
00:52 And I said, I'm Tyler Perry, Maxine's baby.
00:54 I'm my mother's son.
00:55 Maxine's baby.
00:56 Tyler's mother died in 2009 following a long illness.
01:00 And co-host Sarah Haines says the film introduces Maxine
01:04 to the world nearly 15 years later.
01:07 When I met Maxine through all of it, I didn't know her.
01:10 Yeah.
01:10 But it shows just how much you endured as a child.
01:13 OK, wait a minute.
01:14 That one took me-- but you met-- oh, that--
01:17 Yeah.
01:18 Oh, I didn't-- wow, how did that-- give me that--
01:21 you met my--
01:22 Yeah.
01:22 You met my mother through it.
01:24 Man, that's-- wow.
01:25 Thank you.
01:26 It still gets to you.
01:27 Oh my god.
01:27 These things don't go away so fast.
01:30 As the movie's trailer explains,
01:32 Tyler overcame incredible odds during his life and career,
01:36 a feat he credits to Maxine, whose health was failing
01:39 while his star was on the rise.
01:42 In the middle of all of this success,
01:44 I'm dealing with my mother slowly dying.
01:46 I couldn't find my way out of it.
01:49 To say that you met her through that, that took--
01:51 it takes me somewhere, because she--
01:54 you know, this woman endured so much pain.
01:57 And she didn't have some legacy, but she had me.
02:00 And to be-- to say that I was able to introduce her to you,
02:04 you got me there, man.
02:05 I'm sorry.
02:06 Lord have mercy.
02:07 Thank you for that.
02:08 Why is it important for you to use
02:10 your platform for so much good?
02:12 That's about the very DNA of my mother.
02:14 Tyler was making hit after hit, and finally, people
02:17 had to wake up.
02:19 Thanks to the documentary, which streams November 17
02:21 on Prime Video, Tyler's fans get an intimate look
02:25 at the long road to building his media empire.
02:28 My mother said, don't you ever let anybody
02:30 tell you who you are.
02:31 You know who you are.
02:33 Her whole heart was to give, give, give.
02:34 So every time I do something for someone,
02:36 I'm not only paying homage to her
02:38 and letting her know that she did well by me,
02:40 but I'm also showing my son that this is
02:42 how you should live your life.
02:43 When you have, you should give.
02:45 When you learn, you should teach.
02:46 So that's how I'm trying to live my life.
02:48 I want to be that example for him.
02:50 And now, Tyler's living that example
02:53 by sharing Maxine's impact in the upcoming movie.
02:56 I appreciate that very much.
02:59 From the mouth of blondes.
03:00 Yeah.
