00:00 (crowd chatter)
00:02 - So what do you take away from the first week?
00:06 - I mean, it's been fun just kind of adjusting
00:08 to the new game.
00:09 Obviously guys are a lot bigger, a lot stronger.
00:11 So I just think our freshman group for sure
00:13 has been done a good job of adjusting,
00:15 kind of getting our feet wet with a couple of good wins.
00:17 I mean, those are two good teams we played this week.
00:20 Alabama State just competed with Ole Miss
00:22 and the SEC last week.
00:23 So we knew that they were going to be a tough team.
00:25 We knew we had to come ready to play
00:26 and I thought we did a good job of that.
00:27 - You guys had zero turnovers in the second half.
00:30 How proud are you as a ball handler of that?
00:32 - I mean, we knew this team was going to get in gaps.
00:35 They were going to be all over us on defense.
00:36 So we knew we had to take care of the ball.
00:38 We had six early ones in the first half.
00:39 Coach kind of stressed that at halftime
00:41 and everybody did a great job
00:42 of handling the ball in the second half.
00:44 - Seemed like you were seeing the floor really well tonight
00:46 as opposed to those other two games.
00:48 You feel like you're just getting used
00:49 to the speed of the game now.
00:50 What's the difference for you tonight?
00:52 - I'd say, I mean, when you have a lot of guys around you
00:54 that can score the ball, it makes it that much easier.
00:56 Guys cut, they know they're going to get the ball.
00:57 We got shooters all around.
00:58 That makes my job a lot easier as a point guard.
01:00 So just super fun playing with this group of guys.
01:03 - Owen's dunk, I mean, clearly you guys know each other.
01:05 I mean, what, what, what,
01:07 you kind of knew where he was at, I mean, on that play.
01:09 - Yeah, I mean, we kind of knew that their guys
01:11 are going to try to be shot blockers.
01:12 The guy kind of saw him come up.
01:14 I knew Owen was going to be down there
01:15 and throw it up wherever he's going to go get it.
01:17 So, yeah.
01:18 - How long have you kind of just developed your passing?
01:20 Is that like something you've had from a young age or just?
01:23 - Yeah, I mean, I kind of always had it.
01:24 And then our coaches are great at watching film
01:26 from previous games, watching film with the team
01:27 that we're playing.
01:28 So I can kind of see where I think spots are going to be
01:30 open going into the game.
01:31 So, and then stuff kind of opens up as we're playing.
01:34 - The other three freshmen have kind of had their moments
01:36 over these last few games.
01:38 And now you, I guess you could say you got yours.
01:40 Would you agree with that?
01:41 - I mean, I think all of us are just trying to win games.
01:45 I mean, we've all had certain moments at certain times.
01:47 That's just because we all enjoy playing with each other.
01:48 We'll do whatever it takes to win.
01:50 We don't really care.
01:51 The whole 10 guys that we have playing,
01:53 we had 15 play tonight, 14 play.
01:55 Everybody doesn't really care who scores
01:57 as long as we get a win.
01:58 And that's kind of been evident with,
01:59 we have five guys in double digits at the end
02:02 about every game.
02:03 - Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt.
02:06 How do you describe yourself as a player?
02:09 - Just kind of a hard-nosed point guard,
02:12 pure point guard, going to do whatever it takes to win.
02:14 If I have to score, if I have to hit open guys.
02:16 I mean, we have a lot of guys that can score on this team.
02:18 So a lot of guys are open, a lot of guys cut.
02:20 So just kind of doing whatever it takes to win.
02:22 - We saw you out after the last game, getting up shots.
02:25 Why was that something you wanted to do?
02:27 - I just thought that I still had a little bit left
02:29 in the tank, so I was going to put it to good use.
02:31 Might as well go get a couple of extra shots up.
02:32 We had another game and we have another game
02:34 coming up Tuesday.
02:35 So just kind of staying locked in for the next game
02:38 after our wins.
02:39 - What are you looking forward to?
02:40 Creighton, you know, that's going to be a bigger time matchup.
02:42 What are you looking forward to?
02:43 - I think our whole team's just really excited
02:46 to see where we stack up.
02:46 Obviously they're a highly ranked team.
02:48 We think we have a great chance of coming in there
02:49 ready to go.
02:50 And I think our guys are all excited to get to play
02:52 on a big stage early in the season.
02:54 - It's one comfortably, but you had a big bucket
02:56 in the first half.
02:57 I don't know if you guys were down by one point.
02:59 What'd you look for in that play?
03:01 - I mean, our pass fakes were kind of working.
03:03 I saw that the guys were jumping.
03:04 I thought I was going to have a open take to the lane.
03:06 It ended up working out.
03:07 We've worked on floaters for a lot of time this week.
03:10 They've been in drops, so kind of worked out
03:11 pretty well for me.
03:12 - Those seven assists tonight,
03:14 obviously the most you've had so far.
03:16 Just to kind of get in a groove
03:18 and really get in the flow of the game,
03:20 do you feel like tonight did some good for your confidence?
03:23 - I mean, yeah.
03:24 I mean, I got to play with a different group of guys tonight.
03:27 I got to play with some of the older guys.
03:29 So just kind of, they can obviously score the ball.
03:31 So that makes my job a lot easier.
03:33 Kind of got to see different things with that group.
03:35 And then the second half, guys were cutting,
03:37 guys were open.
03:37 That just makes my job, hit the open guy, not too tough.
03:40 - I think you had a steal where it was like,
03:42 a bigger guy like brought the ball down
03:44 and you kind of swiped it.
03:45 Like, is that something you work on?
03:46 And like, if they bring it down, trying to-
03:49 - Yeah, I mean, I'm told not to
03:51 'cause we get cheap fouls for that.
03:52 But I thought I had a good opportunity to do that.
03:54 So I kind of just went with it.
03:56 - The one hand jam that you said, going up four,
03:59 how many times did you guys pull that off in high school?
04:02 - Too many to count.
04:03 I mean, practices, games, it's just,
04:05 I know he's going to go get it.
04:06 So just put it wherever.
04:08 - Lots of fouls called tonight.
04:10 Did you feel like it was a physical game?
04:11 Maybe a little bit more whistle happy, I guess.
04:15 Which would you say?
04:16 - Yeah, I mean, seeing that we saw this team last year,
04:18 their stats last year,
04:19 their stats in the first couple of games,
04:21 they are aggressive team, physical team.
04:23 They get a lot of fouls every game.
04:24 We knew it was going to be that type of game.
04:26 We knew we had to get good shots,
04:27 get the ball into the paint as soon as we got in the bonus,
04:29 keep attacking drives, get open free throws.
04:32 And I mean, we'll convert on those most of the time.
04:35 - All right, last question.
04:36 After Tuesday's game, we saw you getting up shots
04:38 just by yourself in the court.
04:40 How much of that, is that a routine thing for you?
04:43 Or what'd you improve from that performance to this one?
04:47 - I mean, I've kind of just taken every single exhibition
04:50 our first game, just kind of taking little things
04:52 from every game, just trying to get better.
04:53 Every time we go out there,
04:55 just trying to do whatever I can to help this team win.
