00:00 between the Mapuans and the Bedans.
00:03 It will be Bonifacio and Hopya to jump it up.
00:07 Hopya having a 4-inch height advantage and the advantage on the wingspan as well.
00:15 Manuarin Bonifacio is one of the most decorated players here in the history of the NCAA.
00:24 Hopya wins the tip and it is Sunbeta Basketball as they are off to another NCAA adventure.
00:31 Cortez cross-court pass, given here by Gonzales, the rookie from Mapua High School.
00:42 This is a good sight to see. Yes, the shot was missed but knowing Sunbeta,
00:47 we've noticed in some of their games they had lapses in rebounding.
00:50 But it's good to see now, early just now in the game, they are being more aggressive in getting their offensive boards.
00:55 Rosilio, given here by Clint Escamiz.
00:59 Gonzales, a hit by Clint. Bonifacio, wow, shooting a 3!
01:05 Wow!
01:06 Okay, Manuarin Bonifacio rarely shoots 3s but I don't know if that was the plan of Mapua to open the game like that.
01:13 Because knowing Manuarin, you can see he's a very well-decorated pick.
01:16 He has the moves, he can attack the basket but to add this in his basket,
01:21 and to add in his moves, he's able to make it from beyond the arc.
01:24 If he does this consistently, of course, Sunbeta is going to have a hard time.
01:28 So it's good to see that early now in the game, Manuarin is already showing his range.
01:32 Prior to this shot, Manuarin Bonifacio was 5 for 18 from the season, from beyond the arc range.
01:41 And this could be a huge part of their confidence, they're number 1 and they think they can do what they want,
01:47 which is what they're doing but properly, they're very consistent at the same time.
01:51 They are just controlling the pace right now.
01:53 Good box out by Yukie Andrada as he got the ball to Jacob Cortez, that's a foul.
01:59 Mapua seems to be on the lookout for open shots from beyond the arc, they just took another 3 moments ago.
02:09 Because I've noticed also, yes, Sunbeta almost has the height advantage, you can see that even if they don't notice,
02:16 they are doing well in defending inside the paint.
02:18 So if Mapua sees that, they quickly adjust by making shots in the perimeter or beyond the arc.
02:23 Yukie Andrada, he let go of the ball, it went to Escamiz, Cardinals are on the run, in and out dribble.
02:30 Escamiz stops, pops, and connects!
02:32 Clip Escamiz puts Mapua on top by 5 as we get this report from Mickey Santos.
02:39 Aganon and Andrade, the Senate don't cry for the team of Sunbeta.
02:42 Asane Masolet, my father and chief, it's Senate don't mourn this alliance that,
02:47 according to Coach Yuri Escoda, they will take.
02:49 They wanted to thank the Lord for the blessings and opportunities that come their way.
02:53 And according to their homily, that homily talks about having God as a source of strength for this team.
02:58 And to add on another source of motivation for this team to win this game,
03:02 they told me that they wanted to give Coach Norman Black a win for his birthday today
03:06 by playing smarter, tougher, and stronger against the Mapua Cardinals.
03:09 Happy birthday Coach Norman Black, back to you and to the Nantra.
03:12 Happy, happy birthday to the legendary Coach Norman Black,
03:18 who is now a consultant for Sunbeta University.
03:22 And what a luxury it is for the big men, most especially of Sunbeta,
03:27 to have a guy like Coach Norman help them out on the daily.
03:30 And you can already see the huge improvement of the bigs of Sunbeta,
03:33 knowing that they know where to position.
03:35 Yes, they have bigs with height, and the thing is, they know how to take advantage of that.
03:39 So I'm actually excited to see in this game, how are they going to utilize their base?
03:44 Because all you have to do is make sure that they're at the right spot and also at the right time,
03:48 which has been happening recently.
03:49 But you just have to find ways to dump the ball inside the post.
03:56 Rosilio, two rookies on the floor.
03:58 Rosilio and Recto, the ball goes to Cuenco, they go down low.
04:04 Bonifacio, Boni working against Hopia.
04:07 Bonifacio, fadeaway works!
04:09 And it's a 7-0 start for the Mapua Cardinals.
04:14 Sunbeta calls a timeout.

04:28 [Music]
04:53 So Dre, I have a question for you.
04:55 Would you rather have the most souped-up ATV in the world or a sports car?
05:02 Wow. Hmm, what a question.
05:05 I want to go for both because I'm always for speed, I'm always for power.
05:08 If both things have power, I'm always for it, you know me.
05:11 Because Jacob is like an ATV, very shifty, he can navigate through different kinds of defenses.
05:18 And Clint Escambes is like a sports car, he's just really fast.
05:22 And then like what you said, we mentioned that we want both, they both are powerful guards.
05:27 They know when to attack, they know when to control the pace.
05:29 But you know, there are so much differences when they play.
05:33 But you know, like the first round beating, it looks like they're doing similar things.
05:36 In other words, they defend each other well.
05:39 So I'm really excited to see what they can do against each other in today's game.
05:43 Meanwhile, let's get this report on the Mapua side from Lexi Gonzalez.
05:48 Coach Randy Alcantara is really pouring his heart out because Mapua has been trying to become a champion for decades.
05:55 So if this is their year, the championship for Mapua is his sweetest achievement.
06:01 When we talked about the fact that the Mapua preseason is not included in the noisy final four contenders,
06:08 he just answered me, "It's better."
06:11 He added, "We already went through the discussion and the people were just disappointed."
06:16 "So for him, it's better that their composure is just quiet at the beginning."
06:21 "But they're just showing their ability inside the court."
06:24 "So I'm just quiet at the beginning, right, Anton and Andre?"
06:28 Andre, reaction there on Lexi's last line, "Just quiet at the beginning."
06:33 So in other words, you know what, I need time to think about that because that sounds so deep.
06:39 It sounds so familiar. I wonder where she got that.
06:42 But to relate it in today's game, it makes you really think, "Wow, that is very deep."
06:46 But seriously though, last season, Mapua was talked about.
06:53 They were saying that they were one of the finals contenders and they just had a nightmare of a season.
06:58 This year, they were not talked about.
07:01 And now, they have elevated themselves from forgotten force to not just final four contender, but finals contender.
07:10 Just the word "forgotten", forget.
07:12 If you hear that, that motivates you enough to make your presence felt again.
07:16 And true enough, like what we mentioned earlier, Recto making himself felt again.
07:20 So it's slowly getting into everyone's heads individually that turns into a collective effort.
07:26 So once everyone contributes, it's going to be a whole team effort.
07:30 So it could be a motivation thing for them to hear that they may be forgotten.
07:35 But looking at them now, they're number one, they're proving themselves.
07:38 And it's going to be scary for other teams if they are consistently doing what they're doing.
07:43 Coach Randy Alcantara and his Mapua Cardinals, the missing piece in his coaching resume is an NCAA collegiate championship.
07:53 Because he's won a championship as a player here in the NCAA, won a championship, two to be exact, as a junior's head coach.
08:00 Here in the college, that's the only thing missing in Coach Randy Alcantara's trophy case.
08:06 And speaking of that, his dreams may come true and can come true if everyone works together.
08:12 And especially if you're talking about also Sanberes, the same thing, it's always a collective effort.
08:16 And the thing I know I said before, it's really consistency whether it be on offense or on defense.
08:21 So there was a review, they deem it Sanbera basketball.
08:27 So here come the Red Lions.
08:29 But there's a long time that the players can talk, so let's see what comes out of it.
08:36 Tagle. Andrada looking for Hopia. Hopia with a reverse clip. Hopia finds a way.
08:48 Now that's what you want to see, rewarding your bigs.
08:51 You can see Hopia and Andrada setting great screens.
08:54 These are things that you don't see in the stat sheets. Setting good screens, they will pop or they will roll.
08:59 And the good thing here is as they roll, they attract players.
09:02 And the thing is, even if you defend, they're big.
09:04 So they're going to have a hard time defending that.
09:06 So they will take advantage of their height and their length.
09:09 Cliff Hopia, 6'8", getting a lot of playing time here.
09:15 A lot of thrust being shown by Coach Yuri Escueta, who used him.
09:21 Santana Trejo on a 4-0 run here.
09:24 And we can see that their guards or the players outside, yes, they are struggling making shots.
09:28 But to think, what's making them come alive are their bigs.
09:32 So they just have to be more consistent in looking for them inside the paint.
09:35 Hopia very active. Andrada has to shoot. Short.
09:44 And Mapu had to gang rebound there so Hopia wouldn't get the ball.
09:49 Escamiz, Bonifacio with the jumper!
09:54 And his rage is right there inside the arc.
10:00 Juan and Bonifacio is on today.
10:02 And this is what I mentioned when it comes to Mapuha.
10:04 They will adjust fast. When you see Warren take that shot, you can see the defense.
10:10 His hand is down. So instead of attacking, he's wide open.
10:13 So the good thing about Mapuha is they adjust quickly.
10:17 Rosilio. Half court set for Mapuha.
10:20 Rosilio with the runner! A confident runner by the rookie.
10:25 Afia and Sanbeda, you have to do what you can to close out.
10:30 Sanbeda has been doing well in closing out.
10:32 But the teams that they've been defending well with, they just have been making their shots.
10:36 So now, they just have to be more physical in other words when it comes to defense.
10:40 Andrada. A little bit short on that shot.
10:44 And it looks like it's going to be Mapuha basketball.
10:48 Payosing tried to bounce it off the body of Recto, but he was able to dodge it.
10:56 And the confident move of the rookie earlier, a runner by Rosilio.
11:00 11-4 is our score. Mapuha with their own version of a 4-0 run.
11:13 Cyrus Cuenco defended by Jommel Puno.
11:17 Who played sparingly by the way in the first round meeting.
11:22 Escamiz shoots a 3 under the rest clip. Escamiz!
11:27 You can already see Sanbeda is really doing well by guarding the paint.
11:32 Like no one's being able to attack.
11:34 But you know, Mapuha has a way to attack and answer back by making their shots from the perimeter or beyond the arc.
11:41 Escamiz with a steal! Escamiz driving through the lane and almost got that shot to fall.
11:48 This is what I was saying earlier, Dre, as we see this shot by Knit.
11:55 Escamiz, the craftiness, the body control, the confidence. Escamiz has it all.
12:01 And to think, as he gathered or carried the ball, of course, he had no other players open.
12:10 So what the smartest way to do right now is take that shot.
12:13 And the thing is, he's also consistent from beyond the arc. So what a way to get more confidence in this game.
12:18 Knit Escamiz, 23 years old, 5'11", hailing from Manila.
12:25 And coming back to the NCAA after 3 long years.
12:30 Since leaving the Malayan Red Robins after high school.
12:38 Feeling right at home. Cortez, third year player.
12:42 First year player, Jomel Puno, faking, firing.
12:46 And Rosilio comes up with the rebound.
12:50 Rosilio to Escamiz, light drive!
12:54 And Escamiz knew that it was not going to go in as he was chasing that rebound.
13:00 Right after it left his hand. Andrada, titira, short.
13:05 And Puno saves it to the wrong man.
13:08 Escamiz, no look pass! What a find!
13:13 Soriano's play was not complete.
13:16 Cuenco, chop and Soriano gets to his favorite spot and scores.
13:30 And you can already see the difference early on here in the first quarter that San Beda looks like they're struggling calling out plays, executing.
13:37 Mapo on the other hand, they're being defended well but they have good counters.
13:40 If they attack, they'll find another man inside the paint.
13:43 So San Beda just needs to find a better way in defending that by communicating.
13:47 And part of San Beda on their offense, it looks like they're falling in love with their outside shots.
13:52 Which is a good thing if they're consistent but if they aren't, they have to find ways to adjust by attacking the basket.
13:58 Paglen connects from the left corner. They need more of that because right now they are down big against Mapua.

14:38 It's a packed fill oil, echo oil center in San Juan on this Sunday, especially now because this is our final game before everybody heads off to church, dinner with their family.
14:53 And everybody's in high spirits for this highly anticipated matchup between Mapua and San Beda.
15:03 [Music]
15:06 Thank you so much to everybody who are actively commenting, sharing our stream on NCAA Philippines and GMA Sports page.
15:16 Maraming maraming salamat po.
15:17 Paulo Hernandez checking in for the first time as he replaces Peter Rosilio.
15:23 [Music]
15:32 And Hernandez will play the point forward role here with Jommel Puno defending him.
15:39 This is going to be a good matchup knowing that both players can also bring down the ball if they wanted to and they both have the green light.
15:45 So this is going to be a very nice matchup to see.
15:48 Cuenco, good move just a little bit short on that jump hook.
15:54 Puno, Dami Contampay has also checked in for the Medistas as does Alex Visser.
16:03 Like I mentioned earlier if I can just point out, yes San Beda has good offense.
16:11 They're able to execute it, they're able to pass the ball around.
16:15 But something they kind of failed to see is that whenever they have a big rolling they don't find it to dump or try to give it a chance.
16:24 They're open inside the painted area in other words.
16:26 So if you notice there are times that their bigs open but the defense of Mapua is also very good.
16:32 They are bothered so they can't really dump the ball inside the paint.
16:35 So if I were San Beda it would be good to take advantage of the height and length of your bigs that go inside the paint.
16:41 And right now it's a pair of veteran bigs on the floor, Dami Contampay and Alex Visser.
16:47 They've got the physical abilities to contend against the Mapua bigs.
16:54 They're actually bigger than Igliane and Soriano right now.
16:58 So let's see if they can do what you suggested.
17:02 Hernandez, 11 on the shot clock.
17:10 Hernandez taking his time.
17:12 Hernandez draws a foul.
17:14 Just a nice veteran play by Hernandez and his rookie Jommel Puno.
17:20 Because if you were San Beda and you're to scout Hernandez, the first thing that will come into your mind is he will take an open shot outside or he will find a player to handoff and roll.
17:29 But the thing is it's different to see that he's attacking the basket even though there's a defender on him.
17:33 So of course automatically it will be a double team or a hard defense of him.
17:37 So the thing that what he did was smart is he was able to fish the foul on that drive.
17:41 And I think if Mapua is going to win a championship this year and end their 32 year title drought, this guy, Paulo Hernandez, has to play a big role.
17:55 Because while there have been games where he hit clutch shots, there were also some games where he was surprisingly and shockingly a non-factor.
18:03 Exactly. And I've also noticed that and I'm sure a lot of us did.
18:07 And not just him, they also have other players on the spot. They're on and off.
18:11 But the thing that's good about this is that if one player is off or is struggling, there will always be another player to step up.
18:17 So the thing now is if all of them are in their A game, in one game, or in a game, it's going to be a scary sight for whoever they're going up against.
18:24 A very difficult pass. Hernandez trying to look for Soriano underneath.
18:32 And it's already gone. Coach Yuri Escueta, Aaron Arroyo, who had his breakout performance a couple of games ago.
18:42 Speaking of the San Benna Bigs, Drei, offensive foul called there.
18:49 So just a lapse there on the part of San Benna.
18:59 Exactly. And it's good to see, yes, they're trying to be aggressive, but not too aggressive to the point that your bigs will get into foul troubles.
19:06 Because right now what I see, the other way for them to contribute offensively is by getting their bigs involved.
19:14 So as of now, they aren't yet, but maybe they'll be able to see that in the upcoming quarters or of course, possessions.
19:22 Puno comes up with a steal.
19:26 Puno, Visser, Arroyo, they're moving the ball.
19:32 Gallego loses control, dives for it, saves it.
19:37 Puno controls it. Puno grabs his own miss.
19:43 Puno creates some space and scores.
19:46 The film Canadian, Jomel Puno, going to work.
19:53 Look at him, all six foot six of him, folding his body in the air.
19:59 A jackknife move for the finish by Jomel Puno.
20:04 What I like about what he did was the first, when he drove, he tried to avoid the contact, but once he got the rebound, he was able to adjust.
20:11 You know what, let me just take it strong. So from the second chance, he just took it strong to the basket.
20:15 And this is also what I love about this kid that with his height, he knows how to adjust.
20:20 So he can attack and he can score. But right now, if you know he's attacking well, best believe he's going to be doing that.
20:26 So you just have to put good guys on him right now to defend.
20:29 In the first round meeting, Puno only played 10 minutes.
20:33 So he was at that stage where he was still trying to earn the trust of coach Yuri Escueta.
20:38 Exactly. And right now, talk about trust, talk about the green light on what he can do.
20:41 He can bring the ball down. He can take shots from wherever he wants because of that confidence.
20:45 And the green light, the team and the coach gives him.
20:50 Rosilio missing for three.
20:53 It will be a Satvira basketball for a chance to cut this lead down further.
21:01 It's still 41.3 seconds remaining in the first.
21:05 It's going to be two free throws for Jacob Cortez.
21:09 Asuncion, coming back to our game.
21:15 Cortez will shoot two.
21:19 Cortez has not scored in seven minutes of play here.
21:23 So this is a chance for him to get his name on the board.
21:27 And there you go.
21:29 And I wonder also if Sanpeda took it to the side.
21:32 Like their last game against Perpetual, they were 19% with three point shooting, 4 out of 21.
21:38 And they still keep shooting it, which is good because they're trying to get their confidence back.
21:42 But what I liked about what they're doing is they're finding their ways inside the basket.
21:46 So it's good to see that they're adjusting already as a team.
21:50 Cortez for three. Jacob Cortez.
21:54 And the score is 2-3.
21:57 Cortez for three. Jacob Cortez.
22:02 He's suddenly on.
22:06 And Sanpeda is down by just four.
22:13 Escamiz wanting to post up Royo.
22:17 Escamiz, double team prompts.
22:19 Hernandez.
22:21 The ball grazing the rim.
22:23 Puno's the last time.
22:27 And the buzzer.
22:34 What a run by the Red Lions.
22:43 And if that will count, and I think it will, the score at the end of the game is 2-3.
