00:00 A portion of an under-construction tunnel between Silkiara and Dandalgau on the Brahmakal-Yamunotri
00:07 National Highway collapsed early on Sunday, trapping around 40 workers inside.
00:13 In a race against time, rescue and relief operations have been launched on a war footing
00:17 in the Silkiara tunnel.
00:20 The police force, NDRF and NCRF teams are currently present at the spot to rescue people
00:25 safely.
00:26 According to reports, the workers trapped under the debris hailed from Bihar, Jharkhand,
00:31 Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
00:36 The rescue operation has been going on for the past 12 hours but without any breakthrough
00:41 so far.
00:42 However, those trapped inside have sent out signals that indicate they are safe, an official
00:47 at the site said.
00:48 Oxygen is being pumped into the collapsed section of the tunnel, which is part of the
00:53 Char Dham all-weather road project, through a water pipe so that the trapped labourers
00:57 do not have difficulty breathing.
00:59 "We are removing the muck to measure how deep the point where they are trapped is.
01:04 It does not seem too long.
01:06 We hope to reach them soon.
01:07 However, there are indications that they are safe as they appear to have released some
01:12 water through an outlet," Rajesh Panwar, the Navyog Construction Company project manager
01:16 said.
01:18 About 160 rescuers are trying to reach the trapped labourers with the help of drilling
01:22 equipment and excavators, the District Emergency Operations Centre said.
01:26 Some more equipment, such as a vertical drilling machine, are about to reach the site to assist
01:30 the rescue efforts.
01:32 Border Roads Organisation and Indo-Tibetan Border Police teams, led by Commanding Officer
01:37 Naman Narula and Assistant Commander Jadhav Vaibhav, were roped in later to assist the
01:42 rescue efforts.
01:44 Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said that he is in contact with the officials, briefing
01:48 him about the relief and rescue operation underway on the Kanda Construction Tunnel collapse
01:52 incident.
01:53 "Since I have received information about the incident, I have been in contact with the
02:00 district administration, the commissioners, the Abda department.
02:05 All the people are working in the Abda rescue and rescue efforts.
02:10 NDRF, SDRF have reached all the locations.
02:14 We pray to God that all the workers come back safe and sound."
02:20 Uttarakhand also witnessed severe rain this monsoon season, which led to loss of life
02:25 and damage to buildings, roads and highways.
02:27 In August this year, as many as 114 workers were trapped inside a tunnel called Edit 2
02:33 of the Rishikesh-Karan Prayag Rail Line project, when water from a flooded stream in Shivpuri
02:38 area inundated it.
02:40 A police team however flushed out the water and rescued all 114 workers with the help
02:45 of ropes.
