00:00 >> Mike, it's the second game in a row we've seen you go to that smaller lineup
00:05 kinda in crunch time.
00:06 What about it works and maybe what about it do you need to expand?
00:10 Whether it's more personnel you can fit in there or
00:14 more that that lineup can do as the season goes forward.
00:16 >> I'm gonna play guys that wanna play and play the right way.
00:22 And the last two games that small lineup coming down the stretch was
00:28 pretty good for us so I don't know if we'll live with it the rest of the season.
00:33 But they keep making plays down the stretch, I think it'll be okay for us.
00:38 >> Jeff, on your right, Mike.
00:41 >> Hey, coach, obviously it's just the second game of the season, but
00:44 what do you want the offense to look like?
00:46 There were times it's obviously looked listless at times.
00:49 What's it supposed to look like?
00:51 >> Well, more ball movement, more pick and
00:56 rolls, I mean, we played well, I think,
01:01 enough to where we got enough in the paint, we got 36 points in the paint.
01:06 That's pretty good for us.
01:09 We haven't shot the three ball very well and
01:13 we're not getting very many fast break points.
01:16 I mean, which we had in our first couple exhibition games,
01:19 we were out running and that's where we gotta get to.
01:24 But when you're taking the ball out of the net and having to walk it down and
01:28 not getting stops, cuz I thought there were times we just we didn't switch
01:33 correctly, didn't switch up, and
01:37 they were shooting three point shots right in our face, I mean, and they made them.
01:42 So I mean, it's a part of the game, but I thought for
01:45 the most part, we played pretty good basketball defensively, scored 64 points.
01:51 I mean, that's kind of in the neighborhood of where we wanna be per game, but
01:56 we gotta get better.
01:57 >> Mike, on your left, you're tied.
01:59 >> Yeah, Mike, in terms of McKenzie, only played a couple minutes in the second
02:03 half, what do you wanna see more from him to get him those minutes down the stretch?
02:06 I know you kind of were talking about that earlier.
02:07 >> I just wanna see more from McKenzie, more from Caleb, more from CJ.
02:12 I wanna see more when they end the game.
02:14 And if I don't feel like they're giving it to me,
02:17 I gotta go somewhere else and get it.
02:19 >> Todd, on your right, Jack.
02:22 >> Mike, you shot a good percentage tonight, but
02:24 only 43 field goal attempts overall.
02:29 Seemed like the ball was sticking a little bit.
02:30 What do you do to try to get the ball moving in the half court?
02:34 >> We gotta trust each other.
02:36 You know what I mean?
02:37 We catch the ball, and the first thing we think about is putting the ball down on
02:41 the floor, making a play for myself.
02:44 And this is a team game, a team sport.
02:47 So we have to trust each other, and that's my job to get them to trust.
02:51 >> Jack, on your left, Mike.
02:53 >> Yeah, following up on McKenzie, I guess, what is he not doing to get those
02:57 minutes, and what does he need to improve on to kind of contribute more for this team?
03:00 >> He's gotta play harder and
03:02 do the things that we want done on both ends of the floor.
03:06 And that might keep him in the game.
03:08 >> Mike, go to you.
03:09 >> Coach, when you're going with your bigger lineups, do you feel like that is
03:13 a group that can learn how to defend the perimeter over the course of the season?
03:17 And what with them would you say is a challenge right now?
03:21 >> Well, I mean, I think Malik has done an adequate job in defending on the perimeter.
03:28 I just don't like putting Malik and
03:32 wearing in pick and roll situations where the guy knocks the ball handler off,
03:38 and now they are stuck with having to guard the ball, and it's not fair to them.
03:43 So a lot of that is on the guy that's on the ball.
03:46 I mean, we gotta get better in pick and roll coverage and
03:51 getting over the ball screen and taking on the guard and your own guy.
03:57 And I thought last season we were good in that neighborhood, but
04:01 right now we still got a ways to go.
04:03 >> Mason, right in front of you.
04:05 >> Coach, it seems like with Khalil, he really likes to get going in the second
04:09 half, but is there something that you guys can do offensively to maybe get him in
04:12 the rhythm more or earlier in the game?
04:14 >> It's just not Khalil in the first half,
04:17 that whole unit that stunk the last two games in the first half.
04:22 And when you put a starting five on the floor,
04:25 you expect them to get you off to a great start.
04:29 And we haven't done that the last two games, and I gotta figure that out.
04:32 >> Zion on your left, last one.
04:36 >> Mike, just how do you emphasize getting out and running more?
04:38 I know after one of the exhibitions you said that's how you feel like the game
04:41 should be played.
04:41 So how do you make sure when you guys are out there, you're playing that way?
04:44 >> Well, the game is like this.
04:46 If you get stops and you rebound the ball,
04:49 you have an opportunity to get out and fast break and make plays.
04:53 If you get in past the lanes and you get easy steals where you can generate
04:56 offense that way, it's a quick way to get out and play faster.
05:02 Right now we're not doing none of those things.
05:04 We're not getting stops, we're not getting the ball out and
05:07 getting up the floor and playing faster.
05:10 So those are things that we can build on, we can continue to work at,
05:15 but we can't just live in a half court game this season.
05:18 I mean, I wanna play faster and
05:21 I gotta get us to doing that cuz we're not doing it yet.
05:24 - All right, thanks.
